Thanks so much for all the good wishes I'm still as excited as a kid on Christmas morning I took some measurements and I have at least 450 square metres - pretty huge by most allotment size standards! I'm not finding the bramble clearence nearly as hard as I expected. It's time consuming but not back breaking (yet!). Despite what I said about hiring the hedge trimmer, I've decided to carry on doing it manually. Having done a bit of work, I rather think I might have hedgehogs and, judging by some meeping I heard the other day, perhaps even kittens in amongst all the undergrowth! There are quite a lot of feral cats onsite and I'd never forgive myself if I went crashing into one of their nests with whirling blades! Once the brambles are down, I'll be able to see in advance whether there are any wee critters in the way and it'll be a lot safer to use a strimmer then.

oh cats are good keeps the rabbits at bay, and if you feed them on your plot it will avoid any littering, my neighbour had a cat and we never had any problems with rabbits however last winter it died ( he was about 15 ) anyway this year we have had no end of rabbit problems and I lost all my winter veg to them
