|
|
First, get to know your Nostepinne The left end is the handle, the tapered bit is where you wind your wool, and the groove is where you wind the beginning end of your yarn to form the centre pull.
The next photo show the starting bit. First you wind the end of your yarn round the groove a few times. You then spiral the yarn to about half way down the tapered part of the nostepinne. Holding the nostie, wind the yarn around the tapered part about 10 times to secure it.
The next step forms the ball of yarn. Hold the handle of the nostie and begin to wind the yarn diagonally around the centre wraps. Rotate the handle with your fingers slowly as you are doing this so that a symetrically shaped ball is made. You can do 10-20 wraps before rotating the handle or you can turn it continually. It doesnt matter if you work clockwise or anticlockwise and are left or right handed. What matters is consistancy and an even shape. Dont change directions midway.
Eventually this is what you should end up with. This is 100g of sock weight wool. Notice I have done about 12 wraps horizontally around the ball at the end. I then do a coulpe of half-hitch knots around the final wraps to secure the end of the wool.

Gettting the ball off: First unwrap the yarn you wrapped round the groove at the end (you did do that bit, didnt you?). Then gently grip the ball of yarn at the handle end of the tapered bit, with your fingers touching the wood, and PUSH the whole ball slowly towards the end. Because the nostie is tapered it will slide free quickly, so do it slowly and keep hold of the entire ball. Use 2 hands if you need to. 1 on the nostepinne and 1 round the ball of yarn.
This is what you should end up with - lovely even round symetricall balls of centr pull yarn ready for knitting up.
This is my way, not the definative Cast IN Stone way which Must be Obeyed. If anyopne has any tips, suggestions or helpful methods to add, please do.
Hope this helps, Claire UK _________________ www.spin-a-yarn.blogspot.com - my personal blog

You would be amazed - 3 women in a pub, a nostepinne - and some very funny looks! I can't imagine why!
It was fascinating to watch it in action, and it worked very well. _________________
