I remember seeing this great alternative to wrapping to stop gaps on short rows - then completely forgot about it until I was reminded about it again today:

I love this technique, and I've had battles with quite a few as well. When working on flat knitting it works a dream,

Not so good when your working in the round though as it leaves a baggy mess on the short row you knit instead of purling
