Did you watch the programme as well? I thought it was brilliant.
But I should declare that I come from a family of farmers.
Two aunts have small holdings and grow everything soft fruit, salad and veggie. One of the aunts has a farm shop where they sell their own produce - they started their's years ago.
My dad was a farmer with cows, sheep etc but I remember we had a large kitchen garden and orchard to say my mum had green fingers was an understatement, the only thing she could never do well with was peas.

My Papa worked on a farm as did my dad till he joined the Marines so I think it is in my blood as well. Same as knitting, both my grannies were knitters _________________ ravelry id : janice61

My gran taught me to knit - she was terrific a very neat knitter who knitted in nothing thicker than 4ply. The other thing I learnt from her was cake making. _________________ Gillian

I've grown enough garlic for a decent sized plait and now the tomatoes are starting to go red. I've had a few cucumbers, more to come and the courgettes will be starting any day. The red cabbages are looking big enough to cut soon too.
I am by no means self sufficient as I have a small city garden but I've got loads of cut and come again salad stuff and herbs which you really can't buy in the supermarket.
It's only my first year but it has given me a really good idea about what likes to be there and it's just a lovely place to be, particularly for an urban dweller.
