Oh goodness, i didn't see you lot 'ere
Isn't it just GORGEOUS!
Gilraen, it's a "forethought" heel from SKS - basically you knit down to the heel (then i did about an inch of stocking stitch on the back and pattern on the front) THEN you do a provisional cast on for however many half the sock is and basically you knit a toe with the back stitches of the sock and the provisionally cast on other half, then you kitchener it shut and pick up the stitches from the other side of the provisional cast on and carry on with the instep and the foot
I love it with stripeys
Annnnnnyway! The first sock is DONE! I do love how it's come out, the patterning is so very... unique

Yum yum yum...what a tasty looking sock! Did you know you can now get Dark Glacier 'Mints' that are Liquorice and Aniseed flavour and taste just like Black Jacks!! I got some today for the car and they are lovely AND they don't make your tongue black...which I admit...was half the fun of Black Jacks! They last a lot longer though! _________________ Sarah

LOL Blossom
Franney - you are steaming ahead on the sock knitting front and I'm loving this pair very much (although I have no idea how you did the heel even after reading the instructions twice - of little brain today me is ) _________________

Blossom, yup, i have had them and they are delish!
Bob, i am aren't i? Steaming that is
I have an inch and a half of foot then it's toe decreases then it's kitchenering and i'm DONE! Can you tell i am loving the merino? It's a joy to work with and i love using the Boyes too, they make it whizz by
How can i explain the heel? Hmmmmm...
OK, so you've knit down to the place where you want the heel to start, when i do it, i have discovered that an extra ¾" (or so) of SS at the back of the heel (pattern on the instep needles) makes it fit much better. So, then you run a lifeline through the round and slip the instep stitches off the needle and make sure the heel stitches are centered. Then you get a spare needle and do a crochet cast-on for the amount of stitches you need for the heel, in my case it's 32. So now you have 3 needles, needle 1 has your provisional cast-on, needles 2 and 3 have half the heel stitches each. Take the yarn from the other side of the ball - so the yarn is still attached to your sock, at the end of the instep stitches that you've just knit across - you're going to need this later so you just leave it hanging. If like me you knit from a centre pull ball you just take the yarn from the outside of the ball and not the centre and you knit across the provisionally cast on stitches, then across the two heel needles. THEN you begin the decreases and just decrease one at either end of needle 1, SSK at the begininng of needle 2 and K2tog at the end of needle 3 on row 1 and knit all round on row 2 until you either have half the original number of stitches left or an amount that fits your heel nicely, then you kitchener closed
THEN to continue with the foot - at the moment you have a sock with a lifeline and a crochet chain and no needles, so you pick up the instep stitches on one needle, then carefully pick up the stitches on the crochet cast-on onto 2 needles making sure that any gaps in the corners are filled by picking up extra stitches if necessary and carry on as you were - remembering to decrease if you picked up any extra stitches
Clear as mud now isn't it? I'm not very good at explaining am i
It really is like a toe on the heel but not as long and pointy as a toe and with an extra cast on bit _________________

I actually understood that and I'm only half way through my first cup of coffee so you must be good at explaining Franney Did you say this sort of heel helps with pooling (or did I dream that?)? Thanks Franster
