I'm looking forward to seeing pics of all the creations.
I seem to recall that the UK terms originally came from the number of loops on the hook after drawing through the stitch; e.g., a DC is made by pulling up the yarn, then yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops. Then crochet got more complicated....
I much prefer the US terminology because it's more intuitive, in my opinion, especially given all the variations there are on these basic stitches.
That colour key is a good idea.

I've only done two granny squares - was going to finish my jacket - still got a couple of nights though...
