I am being very brave Very Happy

I religously follow patterns, I have no sense of adventure. I am doing a little cardi from the calico book it has a little cap sleeve. I am however using click DK in brown from Readicutt lucky dip. As it is 30% wool I will wear it in winter so I am going to attempt a full length sleeve. I am looking at other long sleeve patterns and working out how many stitches I need to cast on do the shaping etc. I am not sure if it will work out as the cap sleeve might be wider than a fitted sleeve but will give it a go.

Does the cap sleeve will still have have a bit worked until the armhole shaping, if so you might be able to get away with substituting another long sleeved pattern up until then.

It does have a few rows before the shaping so I should be able to work something out.

The best thing to do is find a pattern with a sleeve cuff that you like - maybe from another DK pattern you've knitted before. Then cast on the designated number of stitches in that pattern for the sleeve.

You really need the same number of stitches at the start of the sleeve cap shaping as the Calico pattern suggests, to get the sleeve cap to fit into the armhole correctly. So, work out how many rows you'll need to achieve the length of sleeve you need (don't forget to take off the length of the sleeve ribbing as you won't increase in that) and then distribute how many increases you'll need in the number of rows you worked out.

It does make sense thank you. I am nearly finished the first front then will find my long sleeve patterns and choose one. If I get stuck I'll be back pestering Very Happy

Just a thought but couldn't you do a provincial (sp?) cast on...do the cap sleeve and then unzip the cuff stitches and knit down to the length you want...assuming you would just do ss or whatever and not rib....

You'd achieve the same results KLB but it would be more difficult I'd think, as you'd still need to know the required finished length to get all the decreases in, iyswim?

No of course you haven't!! I know what you mean about top down cos I love top down too.... but in this case I think it would be easier to knit from the cuff up and increase every so many rows to get to the amount of stitches in the pattern at the top of the sleeve cap Wink
