I knitted a pair of socks like this for my dad a few years ago. I decided on the K2P2 arrangement for the top of the foot, and which stitches I wanted where so that the pattern was symmetrical and centred and then somehow worked out the rest of the ribbing round the leg.
I'm sure I did a 60st sock though cos there would be 15 repeats of K2P2... wouldn't there?

I'm sure I wrote down the arrangement of knit and purl sttiches somewhere so that I could knit the second sock to match... but where I've put it is another thing entirely...
