i think that is a fab idea binty......people can join in as when they wish and make anything form cushion covers to wallhangings to quilts!!

we need to set up  a seperate thread and as you said each month a dofferent person can choose an inspiration for us all to do.....we will need to allow extra tiem after december for if people want to actually quilt their finished article.

people could use any form of craft from actual patchwork, cross stitch or even knitted squares, even paper!

do you want to set up a thread, as it was your fabby idea!???

that's a great idea, Binty.   Very Happy

I got an old book off ebay that covers all needlecraft including quilting, crochet, knitting etc.  I only have an old sewing machine though, so I'm not sure if that will be suitable and I may be sewing by hand - eeeek, not done that since at school.   Shocked  Laughing

This is a very easy machine made quilt from the Singer book. It lives on DS2's bed, and is quilted to within an inch of its life. I had just learned to do stipple quilting and I did far too much of it! There are 8 reels of gutermann in the border alone, so I won't be doing that again in a hurry.

And this one...

is on my bed all the time. It was made from FQ's collected on a couple of holidays, and made on an 1897 treadle machine. I did what I call railroad quilting... just parallel lines... in the border, and continuous line 5 pointed stars on every square, no template for that, just lots of stopping and starting. It's much softer, both because of the lack of stippling  Very Happy  and because it has a flannel cotton type backing. DH loves it. It gets moved onto the sofa on cold evenings and when people are ill, and is a really comforting thing because it's not a work of art... it just gets chucked in the washing machine when necessary.

I think it would be lovely, the squares could have any technique - patchwork applique (sp) etc.

If we could have them all the same size it would make it much easier to sew together at the end - we (I) would need an expert to advise me on how to sew it together  Rolling Eyes

The monthly designs could be very general eg a subject - tree, sunset, cat etc or very specific eg a picture - some could design a picture and post it on here for us to download and copy.

What do you all think?

3 x 4 would work as a rectangular quilt.

If this is going to be a year long thing, I would go for one a month... BUT that we make December's block a very easy one (It will be Thingmas again  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked  ) and that we make January 2009 (eeek) the sewing together month. And then think about the quilting part after that, cos that's a whole different ballgame.

Thank you... sorry the pics are so huge.

The bottom one is definitely Most Loved Quilt, even though I have made much more complex ones. Sometimes simple is best... a bit like knitting I suppose.  Laughing
