Carolinne your quilt is stunning! And CJ your stripey tight model is soooo cute!
I would love to have a go at quilting but just get so confused over it all. I've borrowed a couple of books from the library, but just got a bit overwhelmed with all the technical info. Maybe I was having a scatty day I would love to do just a simple patchwork quilt to start with, something like the one on the left that CJ's little girl seems to like but bigger Anyone got any advice on where to start or books that explain quilting well?
PS: I have no idea why I'm even thinking about this when I have so many other projects on the go |

This is the one problem I am finding with a forum of all crafts. . . I am wanting to take up new ones, So far there is soap-making, scrap-booking, quilting/patchwork, oh and not forgetting reading an ever expanding list of reading recommendations. So did anyone work out about finding that 25th hour, 'cos now we need a 26th, 27th 28th etc etc etc !! _________________ Claire

well i am not trying to be rude but "the compete idiots guide to quilting" is a good palec to start for the basics . but two other favourites of mine are "color and composition for creative quilters" by katie pasquini masopust and brett barker and 'colorworks" by deb menz are both good because they give you exercises to do to help build your eye for quilt composition. another one is color from the heart cant remember the author tho'. they are all available from amazon . for sheer breathtaking gorgeousness you cant beat paula nadelsterns books especially kaleidascopes and jinny beyer is also excellent. phew................not enough to space to mention the million other quilting books on my shelf not to mention the knitting books.
hope that gives you a few ideas but basically just have a go. |

Maybe you could start with a cushion cover or something else small so you get a chance to try all the different stages relatively quickly and in a manageable size. It will all seem less daunting then and give you a chance to concentrate on learning.
I love the Idiots and Dummies guides for most things, because you know they are not going to start in way over your head and they are usually well written and set out in nice logical way. They are not big on pretty coloured pictures though so I am afraid there is another excuse to expand your craft library. _________________ Jacquie

when I started quilting, I had:
a pencil
template plastic for tracing and making templates
paper scissors
fabric scissors
100% cotton thread
needle
pins
......and six fat quarters of fabric.
that was 15 and a half years ago, and a LOT has changed since then.
I even bought a short-arm quilting machine just before christmas.
I still do a lot if piecing by hand, it's portable.
but the whole idea of starting simple is a good one, especially if you fond you don't like it....... _________________ Studio_christine

I got a lovely book from OH about quilting for Xmas - we'd looked at it in a local fabric shop and it looked like a nice book. it's 'patchwork, quilting and applique' by Linda Seward. I never really had a desire to do quilting before but I'm going to have a go now. I might start with a cushion cover - I'd like to make a nice quilt for our bed eventually. Think I'll be taking a trip to the fabric shop soon hehe! _________________ Sharon |

CJ I started pottering with bits of material and made up patches as I went along. I prefer the machine for patchwork.

Quilting can be done by hand. You can get templates to follow. I have never done any large projects, just small items. I have been involved in a project where there was a number of folk doing different squares and I learned quite a bit doing that but it was only a one off for a fundraising event. I have loads of books on it but I understand it better if I see it demonstrated.
Maybe there is a group in your area?
Carolinne your quilt is beautiful. What a lot of work

WOW Carolinne that is a lovely quilt.
Is there no way we could start a QAL with one person (dont know how we would arrange who does each month) putting up an idea a month and we all interpret it in our own way and make a 12 inch square (like Carolinne did) and at the end of 12 months we would all have a lovely quilt to show all with the same theme but all very individual.
For those that feel a quilt is too much could do a cushion cover, a lap blanket or for those who stay the course a throw.
With all the experience of the quilters on here if we got stuck one of our experts could give us a pictured tuturial for that month.
