Yarn amounts when scaling up crochet?

Sorry, I'm sure I should be able to work this out but I've got complete brain freeze on it Embarassed

I want to make Babette in aran, instead of the original 4 ply. How on earth do I work out how much yarn I need to order?

Any help gratefully recieved!

Take the quantity (no of balls) of 4ply x meterage on a ball

Divide by the meterage of the aran and you should have quantity of aran needed

I think!

So is it the same amount of metres overall, regardless of yarn weight? I can't believe I'm being such a thicko over this!

It'll be loads bigger though if yopu scale it like that won't it Confused
What about doing a square in aran, the weighing it to see how much you've used, and then work out how many squares you need to get the size you want???? Or am I totally overcomplicating things Shocked

Oooh no Terri, you're making it much worse now! Laughing

I want it to be bigger, so that's not a worry. The original is only about a metre square and I want something more bedspread sized.

I just can't get my head round whether I need to use more yarn or not, or whether I can just sub metre for metre Confused

I'm not sure tbh Confused its multi coloured though isn't it, so ne need to worry about dyelots. Maybe just order what you think, and then you can always get more if you run out Confused

I have found another afghan crocheted in the yarn I want to use (Lion Brand Wool Ease) and it looks like if I buy 'like for like' it should be about right.

I was a bit hesitant about just setting off without being sure what sort of amount I needed - didn't want to end up with a £300 blanket! Laughing
