Tulip KAL

I've just started this as you might have seen on the other thread and CJ is knitting it too in the same colour. It's in Rowan 41 and is a little short-sleeved wrap top in Damask (which is a beautiful silky linen blend) and has a sort of ingenious twisted rope border Cool You can see it here

This is mine so far in Molasses - the colours are actually brighter than they look here.

It is being knitted on Fiona's blog here and she has found a mistake in the pattern Rolling Eyes Thanks Gilraen Wink
cazzie

That is sooo pretty - I want to play too - not sure I can justify buying anymore yarn though Confused
pictish

Well its 22 st and 29 rows Cazzie so you might get away with something cheap in dk but it might not have quite the same drape. Go for something soft if you do.
cazzie

The only sub I can up with with Sirdar Sorrento which I can fnd really cheap but its not quite the same though - or I have some cotton wich hasnt got the drape - off too ponder and do some sums Laughing
gilraen

Glad to help. I'm kicking myself that I missed this yarn on sale! :rolls: Smile
Nanatoo

That's very pretty Smile
pictish

Cazzie the cotton might work ok if its a fairly fine dk but knit it on 4mm rather than the 3.75mm of the pattern.
cazzie

I'm going to finish off my FC shawl tonight and then going to have a play with some cotton I've got Very Happy
Jobo

Oh that is so lovely Ali - Fiona is right what she says on her blog - feeling it on the cardboard cone thing doesn't justify how it really feels. I bet you are enjoying it big time - I would be - the way it is coming out - really interesting to knit Very Happy
CJ

ooo, that is gorgeous Ali. I love the colour. Very Happy Very Happy

What's the mistake, cos I can't spot it on the blog. Rolling Eyes too much red wine and excitement over finishing my new zephyr style top. Embarassed
cazzie

Think this is it: 27 March entry - More Tulip

"There is a mistake on this pattern - where it tells you to decrease...and increase on the same row at the same end as you're decreasing, at the same time. I've just ignored that and increased at the opposite end of the row: i.e. not on the slope. So, I don't think it's a major problem. The decreases are at pretty much the same 'rate' (every row for x number and then on alternative rows for x number) as on the "Twilleys Freedom Spirit" wrap I made"
Alice

I love that too. I'm having such indecisions about what major item to knit next, And I love the Molasses colour. Of course one major problem I have is that we're going on holiday on Tuesday so I don't have much time to get the yarn for whatever I decide to knit.
terri

Its lovely Ali, I was thinking of making this in jaeger trinity Confused
CJ

thanks cazzie. Very Happy *feels dim now* !!! Wink
pictish

I can't see the mistake in the actual pattern yet tho Confused It's all done by rows tho Shocked and my row tension is always way out Twisted Evil

I've done about 4" and pressed the bit I've knitted and its lovely. I think if you wanted to do it in another yarn it would still be a gorgeous top Razz
cazzie

I like the idea of subbing with Trinity Wink

Can ask if anyne has knitted anything using Trinity yarn - what does it knit up like?
Jo028

That's looking gorgeous, what a pretty yarn. I sold my Rowan 41, so I'm safe (I think!)
pictish

Cazzie it's like a finer version of Summer Tweed if that helps Very Happy - nubbly and made with raw silk and cotton so no give in it. And knits quite open and drapey on 4mm. You would only need 4 or 5 balls to make Tulip.
pictish

This is how far I am now - it knits up quickly Very Happy Tho I'm working today so won't get much more done till tonight. I've used 1 ball nearly and am not far from the armholes - I can't believe I will use 9 balls Rolling Eyes

cazzie

That is really pretty pictish - tha Damask yarn does look lovely.
I've ordered some of the Jaegar Trinity from Jeanette on e-bay should have it about Tuesday.

Still might ring the Knit Tin and see if they have any damask left - but I guess it is all gone ....
melody yarns

Oooh that's really pretty!

I'd love to join the kal, but have far, far too many wips that I need to finish at the moment.
pictish

Cazzie they had quite a bit on Thursday Cool Good luck.
gilraen

Pictish what price was it at the Knit Tin?? Thanks. Smile
cazzie

Knit Tin have some - but cant put it by until I get there Crying or Very sad Might take a chance and go out later....
pictish

Can you not buy over the phone Cazzie? That's what I did Cool

Everything is half-price at the Knit Tin Gilraen Very Happy
cazzie

No I think they are busy ...

Might try ringing back and offer to pay over the phone first... I asked them to put it by for an hour before - off to try ..
gilraen

Thanks Smile
cazzie

I've just got back from Knit Tiin Embarassed Got the pale pink Damask Very Happy - not enough left of the other colours ....
gilraen

Yippee!! I'm going to leave it, I have bought too much yarn lately and I really really really need to knit some of it first Embarassed

How long will I have self-control Rolling Eyes
malteser

This is on my to do list but I have a couple of things I want to finish first. I think I might reward myself with this yarn when I finish something using some of my stash. Pictish the green damask looks lovely - your knitting is so neat.
pictish

Thanks Malteser Very Happy It actually knits a bit unevenly but evens out when it's pressed Cool

Cazzie the pale pink will be very pretty Very Happy Are you starting straightaway?
cazzie

Oh yes - will be starting shortly Very Happy
CJ

me too, hopefully. My only other wip is a pair of socks, so my needles are just waiting for my damask!!
cazzie

I've started mine - Pictish are you getting a curl/roll on the edge as it is stocking stitch? Mine is ....
pictish

When you've done the edge its fine Very Happy - tho I did gently press it.
melody yarns

I think I might have to twiddle this afternoon with some James Brett Kool Kotton DK that I just happen to have, and see how it knits up in this pattern! It looks fairly straightforward and quick to knit, which is what I want at the moment!
pictish

It seems easy and quick so far Debs Cool
cazzie

have been to milton keynes today and they have it knitted up in John Lewis - looks good Very Happy

Thanks for reply pictish - will persevere with it then...
melody yarns

Well I 'found' some Sirdar Denim Tweed DK this afternoon in a lovely blue mixture shade, so I might try twiddling with that instead! It won't take much yarn to knit it I don't think, if I use the Denim Tweed DK, and I can use it at work this summer and not worry about getting it ruined by the children Wink AND it will go with my navy combats just perfectly Very Happy
pictish

That sounds nice Debs - I really can't believe I will need all 9 balls of the Damask at 100m per ball but we'll see.
melody yarns

Trouble is that I'm thinking about knitting Vanessa from RYC Classic Art in the Denim Tweed instead. Decisions, decisions. Laughing

cazzie

Thats pretty too Very Happy
craftylady

Debs, that's pretty and will suit you really well. I don't see you have a choice. It's both of them!
pictish

That's a lovely pattern as well Cool
gilraen

I love that one! Could you make it with Jaeger Trinity instead? Smile
pictish

Yes I don't see why not Very Happy It's the same tension - you might even have enough for 2 in that pack Wink
melody yarns

Do you mean Vanessa knitted in Trinity, Gilraen?

If so, I've seen Vanessa knitted in Trinity when I visited Stash of Chester on holiday last year. I think it was featured in Simply Knitting magazine last summer I think, and it was on display in their window. There will be plenty in a 10 ball pack of Trinity to knit this - Trinity has 200m per 50g ball, and that's a lot of Trinity!

I've already cast on for the rib on Vanessa this evennig while I was waiting for something Confused Doesn't look very big though.

If you're knitting Vanessa too, we should have a Vanessa-along!! Laughing
CJ

my mum knit vanessa in sirdar silky look DK. it looks lovely - only problem is she has to wear a brooch on it to stop the v-bit gaping. Shocked Confused I don't know if it would do that with all sizes, she did the 38", I think. Rolling Eyes
melody yarns

Ah, don't worry CJ, I have a plan! I'm going to wear a vest top under mine - my wide expanse of flat chest would frighten the children I'm afraid! A brooch is good though... hmmm.....
gilraen

There's not that much bust here to worry about Wink

Thanks Pictish I have to get that book first but I'd love to knit along. Smile

I want that book as there is a lot of knitted patterns like the chevron scarf I want. Smile
melody yarns

I shall start another KAL thread then Gilraen Wink
cazzie

Not sure who is still in this KAL

Havent done much knitting this week - but thought I'd share my progress -I added a different yarn for the first couple of rows which looks a bit pinky against the rest of it now - not sure I like how it is knitting up at the moment.... Confused

[/img]

I'm knitting it in Rowan Damsk 041 Silicia ...
gilraen

I love the colour! I hate seeing colour cards only. It never shows how they really turn out. Yours looks georgeous! Smile
pictish

I'm still in Wink - just been doing other things. It looks gorgeous Cazzie Cool - I love the contrast edging.
gilraen

Fiona has finished and has very kindly modelled her Tulip for us. http://knitsknotsgnats.blogspot.com/2007/04/pained-look.html Smile

Lovely isn't it?
cazzie

Fiona's does look fab - lovely colour too Very Happy
pictish

It looks gorgeous!! And I KNEW I wouldn't need that many balls Rolling Eyes I think I might just complain to Rowan when I finish Twisted Evil
cazzie

lol - I missed that bit - and I brought an extra couple of balls too just in case (12 in total!) although I may need to make mine slightly longer - yet to work out how!
cazzie

I have just frogged Ariadne as I have decided it was going to be a bit of the small side Sad Thinking of casting on another Tulip but in Colinette Banyan instead - I have 9 skeins so should just have enough to knit size 16 in (I really should concentrate on other WIPS though)

My original Tulip in Damask is still on the needles (soon be up to the arms on the back)
pictish

Mine is still OTN and in my WIP bag - I'm going to start it again next month when the weather is more summery *she says hopefully* Cool Cool
minniemoll

I['ve just spotted this KAL! I started Tulip on Tuesday, it was going to be in the pale pink shade, but then I saw someone selling the dark blue shade on ebay for £1.75 a ball, so I just had to buy it Very Happy I'm up to the increases for the armholes on the back, and am really enjoying knitting with the Damask. Although it does feel wrong to be increasing for the armholes instead of decreasing!

There are progress photos on my blog, link below.
cazzie

Hiya,

Mine is still in progress too Very Happy

Havent done much in last week - havent done much knitting at all - dont seem to settle to it at the moment Crying or Very sad
pictish

Me neither in the last day or so Rolling Eyes The Damask is gorgeous to knit with tho - will be starting mine again very soon I think but the weather just doesn't encourage me to do summery things yet Evil or Very Mad
cazzie

Going to try and concentrate on mine for the next week ...
minniemoll

Well, I've done the increases for the armholes, and am about halfway up the straight section, but it's going veeeery sloooowy - it just doesn't feel *right* to have such long rows at the top of the back Mad
minniemoll

Well, I've finally finished the back, including changing the shoulders to short row shaping, which I was pleased about, it's the first time I've tried it, and it worked perfectly. Well, I think it has done, I don't suppose I'll know for certain until I do the three needle bind off with the front.

I spent about an hour last night writing down all the increases and decreases for the fronts on a spreadsheet, it's just as well I did as I got it wrong about three times, but it all seems right now. I've done the border of the first front, so now I just need to get on with it Very Happy
cazzie

I still havent done much - but kids are in bed now - so maybe I'll get some done tonight Very Happy
pictish

How is this coming along Helen and Cazzie? I'm going to be picking up mine again soon - am just increasing for the sleeves on the back.
cazzie

I've increased for the back and have done 8 rows straight Very Happy
I do like the Damask - planning to do another Tulip if this one is OK - maybe in Trinity or Banyan - from stash of course toothy4

I'm also thinking of changing the front borders - but need to have a play ...
pictish

It's a lovely yarn and really nice to knit with - I'm not planning on altering I don't think. Mine is in green and I have more in blue Rolling Eyes Laughing
cazzie

I keeping looking for any Damask bargains - missed one on e-bay recently Sad

I'm bottling it a bit on the edgings - thinking of adding an edging similiar to the one on this - but trying to knit it in with the front rather than seperate
minniemoll

I've done the back and one front, but I'm having a short break from it at the moment. I will get on with it soonish though, now the weather's cheered up I want to be wearing it.

This is it so far -

The only modification I've done is to do short row shaping and a three needle bind off on the shoulder, it's the first time I've done this, and I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

minniemoll

cazzie wrote:

That may have been the lot I bought - £1.75 per ball, which I thought was a huge bargain, and couldn't leave there, despite already having the yarn to do it in the pale pink shade Wink
cazzie

Yours is looking good minniemoll Very Happy

Could have been same batch on ebay - I forgot about it and missed bidding on it Rolling Eyes

Oooh I love that cardi - pity it's in that book cos it's nearly all baby things Sad

And Helen you've done loads and it doesn't half look nice Cool Definitely must get cracking on mine cos the weather is getting warmer up here now tho still not what you would call 'warm' Confused
cazzie

I have hidden the book from DH in case he gets paranoid (just for the record I'm not broody in the slightest) - the book says the women's designs are wearable pregnant or not and I love that cardi too and want to knit it at some stage
pictish

Laughing I've got Baby Bloom by Erika Knight and it's all baby knits and preggie knits but the patterns are ok if you're not - I've one almost finished in the WIP bag Wink Mr Pictish was a bit worried when he saw it Razz Razz
cazzie

Which one are you knitting?
pictish

It was in SK last year and called Smoothie but in Erika Knight it's the Lacy Ribbon Tie Cardi here - 2nd row at the end.
cazzie

That looks pretty - off to look thro back copies of SK Very Happy

ETA - found it - think this would be good in Kool Kotton or maybe Garnstudio Muskat - and Jeanette has the Jaeger Aqua too - but I'm on stashalong - now I'll stop hijacking this thread Wink
pictish

I'm doing mine in some RYC Cashcotton I had in stash at the time - lovely and soft Cool
mogiebear

Aaaargh! How do I attach the front edging?
pictish

Can you not slip stich it on mogie? I suppose it's a bit bumpy is it?? Is it Fiona on Knitsknotssomething made it recently Confused
gilraen

http://knitsknotsgnats.blogspot.com/2007/04/tulip.html Smile
minniemoll

I've not got that far yet, but I'm imagining that it will be a bit like a three needle bind off - for the left hand needle at least, without the actual binding off bit! Pick up a stitch on your left hand needle, in front of the (edging) stitches on the needle and then knit the stitch you've just picked up together with the next stitch on the needle. Hope this makes sense!
pictish

Thanks gilraen!! Knew I seen it somewhere Cool
mogiebear

Thanks. I'd looked at all the blogs, but the photos aren't clear enough for me Embarassed I've done up one side and upicked it about five times so far - just can't distribute the stitches evenly, and it's a pain to undo and pick up again.
Not feeling too well and have to go to work now (first time in 3 .5 years), so will have to look at it later Rolling Eyes
minniemoll

Could you pick up the stitches first, perhaps with a thinner needle - just pick them up, not knit them - it might make it easier to check that they are spaced evenly. I always use lots of small gold safety pins when picking up stitches, to divide the edge into manageable bits, so that I know I have to pick up say ten stitches before the next pin.
pictish

Hope you sort sometjing out mogie Confused And hope you're feeling better soon.
cazzie

My Tulip is going slow at the slow at the moment - done the increasing for sleeves but now getting bored and dithering whether I like it - close to being frogged me thinks Confused
minniemoll

I've just finished the second front, so just (!) the edgings to go. But I ironed it and it seems to have got longer, which is a little worrying. Although when I check my row tension it's spot on. But it's definitely about 8cm too long. I didn't measure it before I pressed it, so I don't know how far it's grown. Or even if it actually has.... I'll persevere now though, and see how it looks when it's done.
pictish

Oh dear Confused Hope it's ok Helen - I pressed mine a bit when I took a piccy ages ago but didn't notice it growing Rolling Eyes .
minniemoll

I may have pressed it a little too enthusiastically - maybe I should have gone for the damp cloth as per the instructions after all Shocked But the edges were curling under, and the bottom was curling up, so a damp cloth would have been very hard to manage. The fabric has gone very flat, I may try misting it with water to see if it brings it back to life at all.

Now I really am off to Wales (I've stopped at my parents' house en route) - back in a week (unless by any miracle wireless internet has been installed on the caravan site since last year - I'm not holding my breath Laughing )
mogiebear

I finished mine on Friday, but our camera has now gone on a school trip to Spain for a week Crying or Very sad I'm not too convinced that it will return in a workable state.
lindyloop

I think that I might be joining you on the Tulip knitalong!

I have swatched in the Jaeger Trinity, I have a pale grey shade, and it seems to be OK. I do like the Damask though but will try not to buy any!!

How is everyone getting on with it?

Lin x
pictish

I'm just starting the sleeve shaping - all done in with the back Very Happy
pictish

Finished the sleeve shaping now and nearly finished the back so probably 1/4 done Cool
lindyloop

You are speedy! I have just finished the bottom of the back, I like the nifty, twisty edging!!

Lin x
pictish

I know Lin - the edging is gorgeous!!!

Minniemoll is way ahead of us Rolling Eyes And Mogiebear has finished altogether Laughing Laughing
lindyloop

I am just starting the sleeve shaping on the back now, so am cruising along with it!!

I think that I read on Minniemolls blog that she had done short row shaping for the shoulders? (sorry Minniemoll, I couldn't comment on your blog as I can't remember my passwords and user name!! Rolling Eyes )

How do I adapt the pattern to do that and what is the advantage? I have done short row shaping in the past but don't know how to apply it!

Thank you
Lin x
