Trainer socks

I know that you can sometimes make a pair of trainer socks out of the leftover yarn from a ball but can anyone tell me in weight how much yarn I would need for trainer socks???

Depends upon how big your feet are, and what type of yarn you have in mind.

I take a UK 6.5, and have got a pair of footies out of 46g of fingering-weight that was very slightly thicker than your average 4-ply. This equates to about 200yds/180m.
