Thermal-alongThe pattern is here Thermal and it is a lovely spring knit in standard 4 ply tension so get rummaging in your stash I've got some Rowan 4 Ply Soft in Lavender I'm going to try but as I said on the other thread Sirdar Country Style 4 Ply is a good cheap option or a plain sock wool. Or RYC Cashsoft or Rowan 4 Ply Cotton. I have a couple of things to finish off then I'm starting
Wildpurl
That's very pretty. And I can't possibly justify buying any 4-ply to make it. Can I now?
pictish
You must have SOMETHING in the stash surely Carola But it wouldn't cost a humungous amount if you needed to get something specially.
cazzie
That is a lovely pattern
Blossom
Oooh that's lovely...I'm sorely tempted...Rogue should be finished soon and my Twilleys Wrap...maybe I'll have to think about some yarns!!
pictish
Actually just to say that GK have the 4 Ply Soft on special at £2.75 I think in a gorgeous fuschia, a dark burgundy and a milky choc colour Worth a thought.
FatCat
I'm also tempted - hey, it's a knitalong, when aren't I tempted? BUT I can't possibly justify starting anything new, must get other stuff finished. And have no 4 ply in the stash Got a bit excited about some BdF Bali that I thought might do, but I think it's closer to DK than 4ply so won't work. And have no 3mm circs either now I've checked
So, long story short, I really really want to but I can't
so I'll do a spot of enabling instead - GK have some Rowan 4 ply Soft in their sale ....
FatCat
ah poo, Pictish - you beat me to the enabling!
CJ
I'd like to join in at some point too, but I now need some more 4ply soft, as mine had already gone north of the border.
Auntie Noo
4 ply ????????? It would take me til I'm 80 to finish knitting it!!!
You'all have fun though, and I'll be watching!

What about the scandinavian knitwear sock yarn...it's in sale..Fabel??
pictish
Good thinking That would very cheap.
murdo
on 2.5mm Fabel is 24 sts x 34 rows ...wheras gauge in thermal original yarn is 7-8 sts=1" on #1-3 needles and 220 yards in a 50 gram hank . So spot on!! SKD has some plains too but I facy going for a lively look!
pictish
Are you in as well then Murdo?
I'm just going to cast on

Lovely pattern, too nice to hide under clothes.
murdo

just have to finish off sleeves of a cadenza tunic tonight..then in!!
pictish
Oooh that's good
Apart from my Rogue this is the first time I've done anything on circulars and 252 stitches in twisted rib takes a looooong time
terri
I'm definately in for this!!! Not straight away though cos I have my union square market pullover on my 3mm circs, so will have to get the body of that done first I think I will use some jaeger matchmaker merino 4 ply from stash, its a burgundy type colour called heather
jeanette
Terri
What's the Heather like. I am thinking about this one for my teenage grandaughter and her name is Heather. A very petite size 10. What size would that be on the pattern? She is a bit busty.
I haven't finished "wicked" yet so it will be after that.
This is all your fault Ali
jeanette
terri
The heather is a very similar colour to the wicked I made, the yarn is nice, just feels woolly iykwim I think size 10 is normally a 34"??? Is it?
pictish
Sorry Jeanette I'm not called Enabler for nothing I think it's quite a stretchy pattern and meant to be a close fit - in fact it says go down a full size smaller than chest measurements if you want it tight I would measure a top she likes that is a similar fit to what she's looking for.
I've only done 1/2" of the twisted rib so far But it looks nice. Piccies when I've done a bit more.
Terri it will be lovely in the Jaeger.
And I think it would be nice as a summer top in a cotton - Sirdar Luxury Soft Cotton 4 Ply or Patons 4 Ply maybe.
melody yarns
See with the mention of Jaeger 4 ply and Patons 4 ply cotton you're making me want to join in! I've got so many WIPs on the go though I'm thinking of sending one to the frog pond though
pictish
Well then you can slip Thermal in in its place Which one are you frogging tho Debs?
melody yarns
Well...... the Chicknits Ribby cardi. I want to put it on hold until later in the year, but I need to knit a fair amount of the back to do that. So I think I might just pull it off the needles It's beginning to irritate me that it's sitting there glaring at me every time I open the cupboard door. And anyway, I think that the yarn would be better knitted up as something else
pictish
It's a nice pattern but you've got to enjoy the experience Debs so I say frog it and pick it up in the autumn maybe
melody yarns
It depends whether I have the correct circs though 've decided that I like Addi turbos after all, and don't have many sizes. I need to buy some Brittany birches to replace the ones that got stuck in the cupboard door, so I think I need to place an order at GK But I really don't want to buy any more yarn - I've made myself sick with yarn this week
pictish
Well just go on get the needles and NOTHING ELSE You don't need the 4 Ply Soft You can do it. I'm using 3.25mm btw cos that's right for the tension of what I'm using.
melody yarns
Well I've got some 4 ply soft in Bluebird, and some Cashsoft 4 ply in a plummy colour that was destined to be something else, and some Patons 4 ply cotton in a gorgeous crocus colour, so I'm not stuck for choice!! Just bloomin needles!! AND I've got Jaeger Merino 4 ply in Graphite and Baltic blue from Denver Jon (Jon the Yank on here), and some in Hyacinth, so I deffo don't need yarn.... I do need a chicken sandwich though cos I'm soooo hungry after my enforced fast .... see you later..... !!!
pictish
Well there you go And you're sounding MUCH better

Oooh I am!! Temp is down, glands are down, yellow streaks are disappearing, appetite is back and I can swallow! The world is looking good! I'm still not dressed yet though.

have just remembered my mum snuck away with a packet of pink/beigish patons merino 4ply that I got from murdo. wonder if she's used it yet, and if it will be enough.
*dashes off to ring mum again.*

I do have a lot of 4-ply, but it is in 20 100g skeins in different colours somehow! I am tempted, but I need to work out just how much I spent on holiday before I invest in any more yarn. And I'm not sure I can get the stash cupboard door closed now
So for now I am going to enjoy watching you guys start, but I think I may well join you presently.
melody yarns
What needles would you use to knit this in Jaeger merino 4 ply or Patons Cotton 4 ply everyone? I'd go for 3.25mm myself as that's the tension I usually get with two needles.
pictish
Well I'm using 3.25mm circs with the 4 Ply Soft cos that's what I would use on straights So I would say the same for the other two.
melody yarns
I may join in with this later, but not at the moment.... knitting a garment completely in the round with sleeves knitted on DPNs doesn't appeal to me at the moment. Now if I could knit it on straights.....
But having looked at this pattern yesterday, I'm fairly sure I could tweak it to knit it in 4ply on the knitting machine using the gadget that knits plain and purl in the same row. Maybe for the future, hey?
CJ
I'm just loving knitting stuff on circs at the moment, cos it's so quick and minimal/no dreaded sewing up. My mum has found the patons stuff and is bringing it up, so let's hope it's enough.
melody yarns
What's the Patons stuff again CJ??
pictish
This is my first thing on circs and I'm enjoying it but am a bit concerned about the sleeves on dpns I wondered whether you could use a smaller circular needle?? I'm still on the rib but have been doing my hoodie too
terri
you could do the sleeves with two circs instead of dpns The sleeves on wicked are done the same way!
CJ
Debs, I think it's patons baby merino 4ply, or something like that. murdo may remember better!!
murdo

I might need some advice on this later then
terri

Just shout
Socks on two circs is probably a good way to practice
Wildpurl
I was just thinking that two circs would be better than dpns for the sleeves. It should work fine, you can split the stitches into half for each needle, and use stitchmarkers if you need to know where the dpns would have been for shaping IYSWIM.

Might give it a try then
Just started the waffle pattern - YAYYY It's taken 3 days to do the twisted rib

That is really pretty - the stitch is gorgeous and a lovely colour. The twisted rib looks good too - all that work was worth it.
I find circulars much harder going than straights.

I'm just catching up with this post
Your Thermal is looking very nice Ali, very nicely indeedly! I love the colour and the waffle pattern is wonderful. Sleeves on DPNs is what put me off knitting this actually In fact knitting a whole 4 ply sweater on circs is what put me off actually.
Mogiebear - did you knit your Thermal on circs and DPNs?
pictish
Debs now I'm on the waffle pattern it's going much quicker . I did about 2" of the waffle pattern yesterday whereas it took 3 days to do 2" of the rib. I want to try circular knitting as there are so many things in Knitty and Interweave and on the net that are done in the round and I've never knitted that way and this seemed a good relatively easy pattern to start with. But I used to knit with 4 ply all the time at one time. I just love the look of it.
Jo028
It's looking lovely Ali, a very pretty colour. I really don't have the patience to knit anything other than socks in 4ply, so I'll just enjoy everyone elses.
cazzie
I'd love to join in too as it is a lovely pattern - but realistically I know I'd never finish it
mogiebear
Debs - yes I knitted it on circs - one for the body and sleeves on two circs.
I used US 4, from my Boyes set. Is that 3.75 or 3.5mm? So not such small needles.
Have you read the Thermal knitalong ? People are concerned about the sweater stretching out by several inches while blocking.
pictish
I was thinking that Mogie - I might just not block mine and leave it in all its stretchiness
mogiebear
I washed mine and stretched it downwards a lot after I was finished, but it has grown wider with wear, obviously losing a few inches in length. Might be due to the mohair not being very "elastic" though.
pictish
Mine is very stretchy too
pictish
Just a couple of picies of finished Thermals I found here , and here - scroll down . The first one is in Drops Alpaca - I like the sound of that!!
mogiebear
I like it without the placket - a lovely neckline.
pictish
Me too - I might do that with mine tho I'm wondering whether I should have done a smaller size for mine
CJ
I'm still debating which size to do. My mum reckoned the 36", but I'm not so sure?
pictish
I would go for 34" CJ for you - if you're using the 4 Ply Soft on 3.25mm esp. It is incredibly stretchy. That's if you want a close fitting one. If not the 36" will be fine if you don't block it. The waffle stitch makes it a bit like a stretchy rib.
I cant decide what to do about mine - I feel I should have done the smaller one but can't face doing that twisted rib twice
FatCat
well it's taken nearly a fortnight but I've finally succumbed to this one. Was told yesterday that I get a pay rise as of this month, so I thought I'd celebrate with a spot of spending So the 4-ply Soft in Irish Cream on sale at GK is hopefully winging its way here, along with 3.25mm dpns - call me odd but I'm relishing the thought of sleeves on dpns
It's been great reading through the posts here, I think all my questions have been answered! I would have done the 34 in size (I'm a 34 chest with AA fried egg jubblies) but reading what's been said about stretchiness I think the smallest size would be better, I do want it fitted. So thanks for the heads up on that one guys
Yours looks great so far Ali, although it's probably a way further on than your pic by now. Have you decided what to do yet about the sizing? What size are you doing? Have you cast on yet CJ? Oops, lots of questions! No-one expects the Spanish Knitting Inquisition! Sorry
pictish
I would say yes do the smallest FC I am thinking I am going to frog mine and start again because I think it should be fairly snug and fitted and my 36" one has loads of stretch and will not be very flattering I don't think I've done about 6"-8" I reckon - I stopped cos I was starting to have doubts.
But as for the sleeves on dpns you are just excited about knitting a giant sock I reckon
CJ
no, I've not started mine yet, FC. But mine will be in irish cream too. still not sure what size to do, and want to finish my wrap cardigan first.

| pictish wrote: | But as for the sleeves on dpns you are just excited about knitting a giant sock I reckon |
ah, you know me so well! I'll be bored soon enough when there isn't a heel to turn for some light relief on it
You seem to be frogging a lot these days but you need to be happy with it so it's just one of those things. I'd say to cast on again straight away and get yourself past that twisted rib - my yarn should arrive tomorrow so I should be with you on that part, moral support and all that
so you went for the Irish Cream too CJ, hurrah! It does look a lovely colour on t'internet, hope it doesn't disappoint in real life. Get the wrap cardi done and dusted and then I'll race ya!
pictish
I got some of the Irish Cream too FC and you won't be disappointed I'm sure Hope you get it today!!
I think I'm terrible at guessing sizes plus I'm losing a bit of weight and noticing a bit of difference in my clothes so I'm sort of thinking 'will this still fit me in 6 months time'. I am a bit of a perfectionist too tho I think
FatCat
more Irish Cream? oh I'm confused, I didn't think yours was in that colour Or is destined for another project perhaps, or just living in one of those two carrier bags of stash Mine won't come until tomorrow at the earliest, pah. Itching to get started on it!
I know what you mean about the sizes and to top it off there can be variation depending on stitch pattern, gauge, yarn etc. The size that's perfect in one garment can be off in another. But I also think you might be right about the perfectionist thing ...
pictish
No mine is knitted in a lavender colour but I couldn't resist the Irish Cream in the sale and the pink too
FatCat
LOL, you are incorrigible! And utterly brilliant
Should I mention that GK have just put a load more stuff in their sale? Alchemy and the like? I'm gutted, I placed an order yesterday, can't really justify another today. Or can I ....? (You're so the wrong person to be asking about that )
pictish
I know!!! Very tempting but the the things I want are STILL too expenive even in the sale
FatCat
Temptation was too much for me, and there IS that payrise on its way Although I think I've probably already spent it ...
CJ
I've been looking at the GK site too, but good job I have zilch money in my account, so I'm not tempted.
FC, you will love the irish cream, it arrived when MIL was here earlier this week and she was eyeing it up saying it would make a lovely jumper for DD. it's all mine, as I think she has enough of my stash already.
I'm still not sure which size to make, cos I do knit quite tight, but am losing weight too. I want to make the jumper to wear over a thin thermal top under my climbing jacket, so it needs to be fitted, but not so tight that I can't lift my arms above my head. help needed deciding, think will wait til pictish has tried the smaller size.
only got about 20 rows on the back and one sleeve of my wrap cardigan to do now, severely hampered by visiting in-laws who want to go out all day in the sun and i don't get the chance to knit till they've gone back to the caravan.
pictish
Well I'm leaving mine a day or so cos I can't face the rib AGAIN just yet but I still think 34" will be ok for you - tho for that purpose ie wearing under your climbing jacket rather than going clubbing the 36" wiil be fine and still snuggish over something if you don't block it. The stitch AND the 4 Ply Soft together make it really springy and boingy
FatCat
well, I read somewhere (can't remember where now, might've been here even) that if you make a smaller size that stretches widthways then you lose some of the length I want mine to look like it does in the pic on the pattern so I might do the 34 after all. Dunno yet
No sign of my postman yet
CJ
I think I'll go for the 36" then and at least I won't have to do any blocking yay!!! Usually if I do long sleeves on smaller sizes, they come out too short, as I have long arms and I haven't worked out how to lengthen any patterns yet.
I'm going to knit on my new knit picks options. And, I think I might even do a tension square tonight, just to be sure and test the KP too.
Hope your postie comes soon FC.

Aaaarghh! Just found a "tried to deliver packages but you were out" card in my letterbox. I've been in all morning waiting for the flipping postman and he didn't even bother to knock So now I've got to wait until tomorrow before I can go and collect my yarn. Apologies for ranting but I am seriously annoyed now.

absolutely hate it Just been up to the Post Office on the off chance the parcels were there but the van's not back yet. Oh well, on the bright side it's something to look forward to for tomorrow - collecting them, and unwrapping them, fondling the yarn ....
pictish
What a pain FC But as you say you can start looking forward to tomorrow now
What are Knit Picks Options CJ???
CJ
Well, I finished the knitting bit of my wrap cardigan, just got to sew it up now, so I cast on for my thermal tonight. I couldn't use the Knit picks options (pictish see here), as they don't go down small enough.
So, I'm having to suffer my addi turbo circs in 3.25mm. The twisted rib is taking ages though, it took me nearly 2 hours to cast on and then knit 8 rows. Still another inch of twisted stuff to go as well.
The colour of the irish cream 4ply is lovely though and the yarn knitting up very soft. This may be a long-term wip though.
pictish
Oooh right I see now!!
My twisted rib took about 2 days - not solid knitting but still I haven't cast on again yet. But no I don't think this is something you can just knit in a week

jeanette

No Jeanette it's not difficult - at least as far as I can see. It just takes ages to do the twisted rib cos it's sooo slow knitting into the back of every stitch But once you get over that it's not so bad and I really liked the waffle stitch. I would definitely go for it. What yarn are you thinking of using?
terri

I'm tempted to cast on seem as though I just finished something off
