The RulesThe sockamonth challenge will run from january 1st 2007 till december 31st 2007, the aim being to make a pair of socks each month.
You have until the last day of each month to post a piccie on the forum of your PAIR of socks, and if you do this, you'll be entered into the draw to win a skein of n's sock yarn. Progress piccies would be great too!!!!
You will be entered into the monthly draw for every month you complete a pair of socks!
Any member can participate in the challenge, and it is fine to enter the challenge part way through the year for newer members!
The socks can be plain or patterned.
You can use childrens socks as your entry if you wish, but these should count for a maximum of half of your total pairs of socks for the years overall total.
Post a piccie of the socks you have made in your own thread within the sockamonth 2007 challenge forum, this makes it easier to see who made what!
The challenge will be split into three categories when it comes to achievement at the end of the year!
Those who have made 12 pairs of socks or over will receive a gold sock button which they can use on their blog or signature here, in addition, all gold sockist will be entered into a draw to receive the gold sock prize.
Those who have made 6 pairs of socks or over will receive a silver sock button for their blog or signature, and in addition, will be entered into the draw for the silver sock prize.
Those who have made 3 pairs of socks or over will receive a bronze sock button for their blog or signature, they will be entered into a draw for the bronze sock prize.
Monthly winners will be announced on this thread at the beginning of the month from february onwards!
If you are the winner for the month, either pm your address to n or myself, and you prize will be on its way!
I'll post details of the final prizes exact contents later in the year, but they will be sock related, and I promise they'll be worth winning
Happy sock knitting guys

Yep, I've got my sock yarn and needles waiting for 2moz!
I'll be knitting a pair for my oldest son on two circs to get to grips with this new technique.

And I've got my blue jeans LL and addis ready too. Who do you reckon will manage the first pair of the month??
|

Well it won't be me - I'll be lucky to get mine done for the 31st Jan
|
Auntie Noo
|
Well I'd put money on it being Anni to be honest - Most people would be hard pushed to beat her!!!!!! Wonder if we can get a head start while she's in Norway, although I'm sure I've read on her blog (and maybe here) that she's still knitting away!!!

I'm voting for Anni too, boy can she knit socks fast Thanks for sorting all this out Terri. I shall hopefully join you all in February as doubt I will get a pair done in 3 days (before hospital)
|
chrissy

I will be joining but no way will I be going for the gold award, maybe up to six pairs throughout the year but that will be tops I think, lol
my money is also on anni finishing her pair first she is a real wizz

Thanks Terri!! Sounds fantastic...have January's yarn ready to go!

I have yarn, but i have had to order some small size circular needles - I am going to use the 2 circs method - can't be doing with all those pointy little dpns falling out all over the place
|
CJ
|
yes, Anni is a good bet.
Although my black purl socks on circs only took me about 3 days, so maybe if I start knitting just after midnight!!!

I am going to knit the Monkey socks for my first pair but I need to finish a cardigan for my manager's baby daughter first(and probably a hat and mittens with leftover yarn)
I would love to go for gold but would probably need to knit socks non-stop so will be pleased with silver.
|
melody yarns
|
At the rate I knit - and I've probably mentioned this before *clears throat* - but I shall be aiming for the wooden button, a pair every nine months! Maybe that should be the Baby Button
|
janice

Oh no, I can't remember where I put my Addi circulars I have the sock yarn sitting here waiting, think I'll do a pattern rather than plain but must go and look for those needles

Go for it girls!
I would love to join but I am trying to complete another course as well as all the sats booster classes I will be planning and teaching in the new year.
But I am backing you lot 100% and can't wait to see the piccies.

I've turned the heel and done the decreases on the second sock, so I'm now on the home straight.....
Don't panic, just finishing the last pair before I start my January socks!

I started my first sock in December - will this count for my January pair as I will have done most of the first and all the second in January?? Or should I start a new pair for January?? That's if I get the hang of it, although turning the heel seems to have gone ok, just the tricky bit at the toe to get the hang of.
|
terri
|
That'll be fine Dawn, just use the ones you've started
|
Dawn

Thanks, I'd better get on with them. I had to finish a baby blanket off first as the baby is due next week, and I knew if I got addicted to socks I'd never get anything else done

I need a sock a year button! And I mean just that. One sock. I might surprise myself and join in with this at some stage - but at the moment I' m too busy WIP busting.
I'm so looking forward to seeing everyone's socks eevry month.

Joy....I may well have to just make one pair (probably finish it in time for crimbo'07) lol.
we can both contribute one pair can't we

I've chosen the yarn for my first pair, which will be Hedera, but I'm not sure they will get done by the end of January! I've just cast on for Ivy, and I'm going to give that priority for a bit.
But it all sounds very exciting, and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's progress!

Do my childrens socks count as adults? My daughter has asked for some and she is 6' tall and has size 8 feet
and my 12 year old son has size 6 feet so he is going to be big too - I'm only 5'2" but hubby is 6'7" !!!!!

I'm knitting as fast as I can in Norway but my shoulder is playing up and I want to finish a pair of socks for my Dad before we leave on Thursday and I'm struggling. I've got half the cuff left to do on the first sock (doing toe up) and I may not make it.
As for me knitting the most socks - I'm not sure as I want to knit a few other things this year too but I'll try.

'will my Dad's socks count btw?? I started them the day before yesterday but only got the foot done on first sock by last night. Or shall I start counting with my next pair?? I'm really excited by this btw. When I get home I'l lhave to get a button sorted.

you can count them if you want to anni

Blimey, you lot are quick off the mark. I hope my circulars arrive soon so I can join in.

So you can miss a month...or two? I've never finished a pair as a mouse ate my half finished one...old house. I'm going to be slow?? Still ok??

OK..heel bit gives me the willies

We don't want you having the willies now do we? Why not knit a tube sock? You know, one without a heel bit. I'm assuming here, of course, that they would be acceptable. I'd better ask....
Terri, our own wonderful Sockamonth Supremo, what do you think??

I've just read all the posts above and I'm smiling a bit - I'm knitting a size 11 sock for Matthew and I'm a size 3 myself, there's not much difference in the sizes! He'll be catching up with me soon!!

if knitting heels gives you the willies then maybe you should make a willy warmer....that would look very strange if it had a heel

I've joined - tis how I found this forum. You know what they say about curiousity. I'm cheating (just a tad) and starting with a pair of socks half done. Least it'll give me a kick start to finish them AND inspire me to use up some stash. Stash? What stash? Looks nervously over shoulder.
This is all very timely because I'd just splurged on buying membership to Fyberspates' sock club.
Now how do you get the lovely pic in your sigs? complete with flashing star?
And how do I get any pic in the sidebar of my blog - I've gone and changed to the new beta blogger and it doesn't want to play like the old one did.

instructions here, just scroll down to bottom!
hth.
I just put my button straight onto the blog but although I upgraded to beta blogger, I kept my original template, so I'm not much help I'm afraid
|
Sprite64
|
Eek - I want to play too but I'm so slow at knitting I've got quite a bit of sock yarn to use up. I've not much hope of casting on and completing a pair this month, although I really have to cast on sock 2 of the opal yarn I dyed before crimbo - photos here - so maybe that will be my challenge this month (bit of a cheat though!). I think I'll have to re-do the toe on the first one too - I knitted them toe-up but it's a teeny bit too short so I'm thinking I can undo the toe and knit the foot a bit longer?! I assume it won't make my sock look too weird?!
|
jacquie
|
Don't worry. You don't have to do a pair every month. Just post when you have finished a pair to be included in that month's draw. And you will still win a silver button for 6 pairs or a bronze button for three pairs.
|
pictish
|
I have a question I'm terrible at just doing one thing at a time as you know Can I just start other socks as and when - I don't know if I can just work solidly on just the one sock for a month then start one the next month etc - it's not in my nature I mean I might start one now in another colour and call it my February sock but it might be finished first Or do you have to be disciplined about it
You can see I'm itching to cast on something else
|
terri
|
No you don't have to work solidly on one Ali!!!! I'm doing a pair of bed socks for my sister before I do the second whitby sock! Just do them anyway you enjoy
|
pictish
|
So as long as you finish ONE PAIR in a particular month that's all that matters for the monthly draw but I could go for gold altogether doing 12 in December - just an example Is that right?
|
jacquie
|
Just enjoy making socks as and when, and post them when you are done. If you really think you can manage 12 pairs in December then go for it.
According to my SnB Calendar, in Spain St Sebastian watches over the woollen stocking makers - I wonder if he is watching over our challenge?
|

I was kidding there Jacquie - tho CJ could possibly manage that

I'm not sure now my OU coursework has arrived, I might have to cut down on my knitting time.
|
ClaireUK
|
Another question - Is it right that only the sock(s) made in a particular month count as the sock-a-month pair?
I mean, if I make 3 pairs in January, I cant count them as Jan,Feb,March can I? I have to actually make a pair in each month I want to enter?
Confused Claire UK
|
jacquie
|
In an ideal world the socks should be knitted during the month they are being submitted for, but we don't have a sock-knitting detector van so we won't be knocking on your door to find out why you are knitting more socks than necessary in any one month, and none in others!
|
ClaireUK
|
LOL - I love the idea of a sock-detector van and the knitting police jumping out to check whats on my needles.
Sort of like Monty Python and the Spanish Inquisition ROFLOL

Yeah, get the sock detector van on the road.

hmmm so if i only make one sock and then the second in feb...would this be better?

They were knitted in Regia using Wendy Johnson's toe up pattern.

nice socks Tutley!
Terri, oh esteemed and wonderful judge and organiser, what's the plan? Will you be going through all our posts for finished pairs? O r should we post pics of the pairs we want to enter in here (or a Jan sock entry thread or something) so they're all in one place?
|
terri
|
I think its probably a good idea to have a thread where only piccies of entries are posted, no comments otherwise it'll still be hard to sort through!!! I'll see what debs and jacquie think and get back to you

And BIG Thankyou from me too....i've never made socks so fast!...
My Sis has even been and bought (yes bought!) herself a ball of opal feelings (I was so proud lol) and she wants me to make her a pair too...
I think i'll make hers in feb and use them for febs draw...i feel a bit guilty about jumping in and making febs socks in jan (2 circs tho )
Lovely socks tutley btw

HI, I have only just registered on the board, socks are one of my thing's My question is do I just post a pic on the pic board of my Jan socks or do you have a joining list.

you don't have to officially sign up or anything like that, just post piccies in a new thread for your own socks, and then a finished piccie in the january entries sticky

Thanks terrie, will take a pic of socks and post it later. Am I then allowed to have a sock a month siggy

Of course you are allowed to have a button!
I think there's a sticky at the top of the sockamonth section telling members how to get their button

Debs has clarified on another thread that socks must be finished in the month they are being entered for the prize draw of yarnyard sock yarn.
I would like to add to this as follows
please only post one pair of socks per month on the sockamonth thread, if you make additional pairs of socks, please post these in the "look what I made thread" where they will still be admired!
You can still count the additional socks as pairs for the overall challenge, but as you name only goes in the draw once per month regardless of how many pairs are made, I feel it is better to stick to just the one pair in each monthly thread!
I am conscious that some of our members are already becoming disheartened by not being able to keep up with speedier knitters, and don't want this to ruin the spirit of the challenge! We are afterall only in march
Thankyou
