The Knitter

Blimey it is horrible this month IMO Shocked  Laughing Please feel free to disagree Wink  but there are 2 patterns in it I quite like, both of which I have and would each cost about £180 to make Laughing , but some truly hideous things like that capelet thing by Louisa Harding Shocked And still nothing to read in it so you flick throug in 5 minutes Rolling Eyes I have actually cancelled my subscription and I went and bought SK to get Alan Dart's Medieval Mice Laughing  Laughing I've obviously just got 'nee couth' as they say in the northeast Laughing  Laughing
Glynis

I've been confined to barracks with a flu-like bug for a fortnight, and only just gone back to work, so I've not seen it yet.
I'm still waiting to get to town and buy the newest Yarn Forward (none of the local newsagents seem to stock it).
pictish

I got the last copy of YF in my WHSmiths last weekend - it's available online now Glynis, it's just gone live. Just in case you can't find it!!! But am put off that too because of the number of mistakes in the patterns Confused There was a Mystery Blanket KAL in the Rav group and they've all just about given up because of errors in the squares patterns. None of these magazines seem to employ experienced pattern checkers!! 'Knitting' is the only one I really trust tbh.
cazzie

I like the Katerina Shawl - want to pinch part of it for a cardi pattern (the chevron egding going into the leaf pattern.

I also like  Carnival Cardi but would adapt to be longer and more subtle colours.

And the crochet blanket but already have that pattern in a Rowan book.

I quite like the look/sound of next months (ethnic knits).
Very Happy

I;m not sure about YF - havent brought the current one - tempted by Inside Crochet but want to see before I buy.
terri

Mine came on thursday, theres nothing in it really that I would make Confused
And I can't understand the crochet blanket being in there when the magazine is supposed to be aimed at advanced knitters Confused
I think its very "simply knitting"-ish this month Rolling Eyes I do like the look of next months though, but that will be the last of my three month, and I doubt I'll be subscribing Rolling Eyes

might pop and look at YF though Laughing
janice

Mine also arrived on Thurs and my thoughts for soe of the patterns was 'what are they thinking' (or words to that effect  Wink )  I took up the 3 for £1 offer and have cancelled the DD, they haven't convinced me that they are super duper and I think they have a cheek asking for £5.99  Confused   And I already have a couple of the patterns as well.  Is it just me who gets annoyed when half the patterns in a magazine have been taken from books?
pictish

I agree Janice!!! Too many reprints for a mag at £6 - much more than the price of Interweave for instance which has so many more well original patterns it it.

It's just not 'me' I think. I have edited out the bird's nest thing Shocked  Laughing
seren

i have found more mistakes in patterns in 'knitting' than any other magazine, and never found any errata for them either  Confused
daisydap

i dont like the mag either, would not knit a single thing. seems they are more concerned with new techniques than the actual look of the garment themselves.
Wildpurl

I'm sticking with Interweave Knits and Crochet for now I think. But I agree with pictish, I am thinking of buying SK just for the AQlan Dart patterns. Those Medieval Mice are well cool, and the wedding cake for next month is a hoot.
pictish

Aren't they fab Carola!!!! I need to get next month's as well for the rest of them Wink
Wildpurl

I love Alan Dart's patterns and one day I may even knit one of them LOL
But they are so beautifully designed with such attention to detail. His nativity is on my list for this year, so who knows....
seren

i've ditched sk, interweave and let's knit. i still like knitting despite the mistakes and i'm undecided about the knitter as this is only my second issue. the last one was nice but there's nothing that grabs me in this one.
i think it's time we had another new knitting mag in this country  Laughing
modelwidow

Yes I have to agree Pictish - not a thing in there I would make, the carnival cardi is about the best but there isn't enough of it, like cazzie, I'd want it a lot longer.
I did notice there seemed to be several 'extracts from books' and yes, nice though it may be what is the crochet blanket doing in there?

Glad this was on the 3 for £1 - off to cancel the DD now!  Still can't beat YF imho
ClaireUK

I've cancelled my DD too. It is just too expensive for what it is - a collection of reprints and weird stuff with nothing to read. I can buy a really good book for  less than the quarterly DD.

However, I could just be feeling negative about mags ATM cos I have wasted endless hours on the YF Mystery blanket and have nothing to show for it that is useable. Apart from the mistakes I really dont think I will only need 500g of yarn unless it is a very small blanket : (
Anna

Just to be different  Wink  I've liked this issue of the knitter (although I did think ??? to the nest "thing" and I didn't like the capelet) and am seriously thinking of keeping on my sub, although it is expensive for me.

I already subscribe to Interweave and I find myself buying YF quite a lot, but apart from that the other knitting mags don't do a lot for me. If I have the urge to buy a magazine I will usually go for Knitting as I prefer that to the others available, but I'm not usually that bothered.

Somebody has to be different, and it's usually me!
Fi

I am in two minds about this one too.

I did get sk for the mice patterns. I am lucky I have subs to YF and knitting and have gone off lets knit.
dreamcatcher

I'm a bit meh about this issue of The Knitter. The patterns seem to suffer from quirky-itis, I didn't feel there was anything that would suit me, let alone anything I liked enough to consider knitting. I hope it does improve over time but so far it isn't a patch on IK or YF. The mag I'm enjoying the most at the moment is actually Sew Hip!  Laughing

I thought the same too Anna. I like it enough for the Carnival Cardigan which I would love to try! Smile
cazzie

I like the Carnival Cardigan - maybe we could do a KAL sometime - I like it - although will do it a bit longer
malteser

I quite like the carnival cardigan, but with a straight edge to the back, and longer. The baby's blanket is a clever idea.

My main problem with this magazine is the lack of articles. I will give it a few more months as I was unimpressed with Yarn Forward to start with. My favourite magazine for articles is Knitting - they seem to strike the right level for me, they are neither too simplistic or too specialised/advanced.
lillybee

I just subscribed to Knitter yesterday, saw an offer 3 for £3. I just cancelled Lets Knit as I haven't seen anything I likle in it for ages. I still subscribe to SK and am okay with mostly. I flicked through Yarn Forward in the newsagent but nothing appealed to me in it
loobyj

Yeah, I was a bit ambivalent about it this month - but I do like the shawl pattern.  I would like more 'reading' in it - I go through it far too quickly for that price.

Really I should give up buying any knitting mag - I've got so many patterns lined up from old issues it'd take me forever to do a quarter of them!

i am in love with the long waistcoat - it's out of this world but i could never ever afford the yarn for it!  Crying or Very sad
Aknita

When do those of us who subscribed to the three for £3:00 need to think about unsubsribing?
terri

I cancelled my dd yesterday. I'm not bothered if they don't send me the third issue tbh Smile
Aknita

I'm going to do the same I think. It is always in WHS, so if there is ever something I desperately want, I shall buy it as and when.
Blossom

The Erika Knight chevron sweater was in Simply Knitting Issue 23 (Jan 2007)! I knew I'd seen it somewhere and realised when I was putting some mags on ebay last week!
