The Kauni Cardigan KALI'm in love Have you SEEN this on Yarn Harlot??? The colours are just amazing. It IS a very boxy shape, it's fair isle in the round AND it's got steeks but still I am VERY tempted - take a look here scroll down a bit
|
Sprite64
|
I've seen that too - it's amazing!
|
Jo028
|
It's gorgeous, but way way above my ability. You're very brave to even think about it
|
pictish
|
Well it's less fiddly than normal fair isle in the round cos the wool is variegated so just two balls throughout - but the steeks *faints*
Just emailed Jannette to ask her to keep me some of the yarn when she gets it
|
jessica
|
I just love those long lacy holdups!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
CJ
|
scary - but totally gorgeous. I think I'll leave it a while before trying steeks though!!!
|
FatCat

What CJ said goes for me too - exactly!

I think that cardi is fab - Astrid also has the yarn but think you need to pre-order as it is selling fast
|
Jo028
|
They're saying on the Knitty forum that it's a scratchy yarn, so might be an idea for Janette to test it for you.
|
pictish
|
I imagine it's a bit like Jamiesons which is a bit scratchy but I won't be wearing it next to my skin
Thanks for that Cazzie - haven't heard back from Jannette yet

Is Jeanette on holiday yet?

She goes Monday I think Cazzie so really there's only today and tomorrow morning I think realistically to buy anything She's going to keep some of the Rainbow Kauni for me when she gets it

It's fabulous isn't it? I'm not sure it's very 'me' to wear but I LOVE seeing how the colours progress in designs like this. I might have to do itjust for the sheer pleasure of it!

I'm not sure its really 'me' either Claire - maybe when I'm feeling like an 'arty' day

I've jusy been wondering about making it a bit more shaped? There's no reason you couldn't put in some increases and decreases, is there? I've also been wondering how it would look in the other Kauni colours - must have a hunt round the blogosphere and see if anyone has done that. I can't work out whether it might all blend in a bit much if it was greens or blues etc?
Think I'm over that terrible 'don't want to buy anything' phase!
Claire
|
pictish
|
I knew it wouldn't last
Yeah I might shape it too - it's not a complicated pattern. The other colours are not AS varied but Jannette has lots of the others in stock at the moment!!
|
Jobo

That is a lovely pattern, but I would be terrified of cutting my knitting I really like the way the yarn works as well

I'm wondering if it might work for Eunny's 'Venezia' from IK?
Claire
|
pictish
|
Oooh maybe!!!! It says on Astrid's Obsessions where you can buy it that it's a shetland type yarn and it's knit on 3mm.
I've just bought some tho!!!!! I went for a different colour cos I thought the Rainbow looked a bit TOO bright for me see here tho it IS gorgeous and I might make it later but have gone for this one here and Jannette had some in stock These knitters are dauntingly talented peops tho - knitting lots of Alice Starmores just like that

Thats lovely too
Reminds me of a cardi out of a Kaffe Fasset book I knitted some years ago but then went and felted by mistake

You knitted a Kaffe Fassett Cazzie

I love the colours you've picked Ali! Much as I'm tempted by the rainbow, I think the subtle ones are much more wearable. Hmmm... wonder if Jannette is all packed and set to go on hols yet...

You lot are terrible ...now there's something else I've *got* to do. Could we have our own KAL perhaps to start when we've nearly finished that Stole?? Or can't we wait that long....

No not yet Claire!! Mine missed today's post so is going tomorrow but I think that will be the last one for about 2 and a half weeks. There is another colour I liked too - sort of purples and deep blues

I did cheat a bit - by the time I got to the sleeves I did stripes only not the motif - will try and find a piccie online of the one I did - I was devasted when I felted it and didnt buy Rowan yarn for years for fear of doing it again
I got rid of all my KF books when we moved - do I regret that
Found the one I did - it was the cover one on this book

Ooh yes Cazzie a piccy would be lovely!!! You can still pick up copies of the books on ebay for a couple of quid
Alice the proper KAL has closed so maybe we SHOULD start our own - not sure when - let's see who would like to join
Claire it's actually very reasonably priced . I got 2 hanks about 490g - but won't use that much I'm sure - and it was only about £27 inc postage That does up to the biggest size.
|
cazzie

Found it and put link in my post - tempted to get the book again
Not that I'll ever get round to kniting any again ...

I've bought some of the 'autumn-y' colourway
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Kauni-Multi...Z1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem
I think I shall get some rainbow as well though, just to look at, if nothing else!
I'd be up for a Kauni KAL but I'm VERY slow and easily distracted by shiny objects!
Claire
|
pictish
|
Well we can't have that I mean whoever heard of someone joining a KAL and getting distracted
That autumny colourway is LOVELY too
I have to say the pattern assumes a bit of experience in these types of garment
|
Seahorse
|
Yes, I thought quite a bit was 'taken as read' with the pattern! I'm quite sold on trying to make Venezia with mine though. I've been wanting to make it for ages but not *quite* found a 'wow' yarn until now. Of course, it depends if I can get the right tension as Venezia is so shaped and fitted, it's fairly crucial to get that right
Claire
|
Alice
|
I've bought some of the EF colour. It's lovely and I shall get it by the weekend.
Regarding experience....I've knitted Fairisle but these steeks scare me half to death. I shall rely on everyones support when the time comes.
|
pictish
|
I think that's the same colour I went for Alice They say that steeks are nothing to be scared of But I've never knitted in the round, never done fair isle properly on straights either so I've got a lot more to be scared of than you Alice
We can keep following the progress of peops on the proper KAL and pick up some tips
|
Seahorse
|
Famous last words, as I've never done them either but steeks don't look too bad if you prepare properly beforehand. My worry isn't so much the cutting as making the sleeve joins look neat
Good idea to keep an eye on the official KAL and take notes!

There are three people so far doing it on Ravelry. The only one finished is "K2Karen" and she's commented
"Easy, easy knit. If you're new to nordic style sweaters, you may want to refer to one of the Zimmermann books as a guide to step you through the process since the pattern is rather spare.
July 4, 2007. Shoot: Gauge lies. My sweater is too small. Sounds like a design opportunity since i only need to add about 2 inches diameter."
I've downloaded the pattern but not read through it yet. My blood pressure has already gone up from the excitement so far...

I've just got this yarn from Germany

I did Queen of the waves in the denin kuani, quite scratchy to knit with and there were bits of pine needle in it. Like kniting with kuryon on a thinner scale. it softened a bit on washing but not as soft as sock yarn. Got about 400g left so may adapt the pattern to make a wee bag.

I promise you ladies, steeking is not worth worrying about. I've done it on four sweaters/jackets now and so far touch wood (she says frantically finding some) I've never managed to bodge it up. As long as your scissors are sharp and you have the time to devote without being interrupted you'll have no problem at all. There is no unravelling, the stitches stay put. I know it's scary the thought of all that beautiful knitting and slicing into it, but once done you'll never fret over steeking again. Eunny has an excellent steeking tutorial
http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/200...eeking_chronicles_the_should.html
...and the one I used when doing my very first Poetry In Stitches sweater is this one. I'm a picture based learner and this one says it all.

I've no intention whatsoever (honestly) of doing this...well maybe one day then

I think so terri cos 480g is for the largest and I'm thinking of shaping mine a bit so using even less I think maybe Claire got it from here - not sure but it could be!!

Terri, I ordered from Wollesucht.de:
http://www.wollsucht.de/catalog/i...osCsid=r4e7e97efgbiigtccpfbsrbhh5
I wasn't certain of the ordering process, as there's no 'English' option but I emailed them with what I wanted and they sent me a Paypal button. Very easy and very friendly and efficient. Shipping on 600g was 14.90 Euros, which I thought as very reasonable.

I might not be able to wait too long once the yarn arrives.

I'm not certain when I'll start but probably quite soon. I must finish the toy I'm making for DD1 but I might start a Kauni project after that. I *was* going to finish something first but... I guess all my other WIPs will still be there in a few weeks!
Glad you got on ok with Wollesucht Terri. Really nice people I thought! I'll definitely order from them again.

What toy - please show and tell!!
|
Seahorse

Binty, I'll tell but I won't show yet, cos at the moment it's the oddest looking collection of pattern pieces I've ever seen!
It's K-9 from Joy Gammon's Doctor Who Pattern Book. I've just got to make one more head piece, then do the sewing/stuffing and all the embellishments but he's got a rather unusual construction (to me anyway) with a sort of 'wrap around' gusset piece
If you scroll down a bit, there's a pic on my blog of what he's *supposed* to look like!

I'm really hoping mine comes tomorrow
|

Mine's come mine's come!!! YAYYY for Jannette It's greener than it looked, dark and muted colours - like a Scandivaian pine forest Piccies soon
It ISN'T soft btw - a bit like Shetland - but maybe it's softer after washing. I will do a swatch and let you know But there's MASSES of it - each 100g is 200m.
|
pictish
|
Here it is!! It's shade EF.
|
Alice
|
Yes that's mine too!!
And mine's just come as well!!
But it's a lot darker than I'd expected - in fact I'm wondering if I can team it with something else because I don't really want such a dark cardi.
|
pictish
|
Yes it IS darker but I rather like mine - but you could keep it as the background maybe Alice and use another shade as the squares - but you would have to order it from Germany if you want it quickish. Unless you have any Jamiesons in your stash - it's very similar to that. Or Rowanspun 4ply maybe.
|
cazzie

Thats a lovely colour

I got mine today too! I'm also a bit undecided on the colours though I got EP:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Kauni-Multi...oryZ75569QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
and mine is also darker than I expected. I don't really DISlike it, it's just not what was in my head! Having seen Ali's pic, I'm rather wishing I'd gone for EF!
That said, the skeins are HUGE and very good value I think and if I can't learn to love it, I still have my rainbow version on the way from Wollesucht
