The Hobbit By J.R.R.Tolkien.

Has anyone read the hobbit?Daddy and Mummy(Murdo)have. It was the book that started of" Lord of the rings".I really like it do you?
gilraen

I would definitely recommend this, it is the first book in the Tolkien saga. It's the story of Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf and some dwarves on a quest. During this quest some of the adventures of Frodo, Aragorn etc are started. The group visit Legolas's father in Mirkwood forest for example and alsogo to Rivendell meeting Lord Elrond. It's a really lovely story which my mother read it to us when I was about 4-5 years old and gave us Lord of the Rings when I was 8 (no PS2 in those days Wink Smile)

EDIT: Have you read it yet?

Have you read the Philip Pullman books yet? The Dark material's Trilogy?
carolinne

i love that book pp.

it is one of my favourites

where are you up to in it?
Anna

I love The Hobbit, I think it's better than Lord of the Rings Twisted Evil

I have 2 beautiful illustrated editions, one illustrated by Michael Somebody-or-other, which my parents bought for my 11th birthday and another illustrated by Alan Lee, who did the concept art for the LOTR films. They're lovely. The only drawback is that one of them has a huge double page spread of Bilbo fighting the spidders in Mirkwood and I cannot stand those creatures. I can't even look at pictures of them without breaking out in a cold sweat and almost hyperventilating, so that edition is in near perfect condition Shocked Rolling Eyes

I now want the Alan Lee version of LOTR, but that costs more pennies than I can admit to owning at the moment.

The Hobbit is a better 'story' than LoTR but the whole series of books (Silmarillion, LotR, Unfinished Tales, History of Middle Earth 1- 12, Letters, The Children of Hurin) are a world apart! I am a total Middle Earth Freak Wink Smile

If you like the Hobbit you would also likeTolkien's Tales from the Perilous Realm: includes short stories like Farmer Giles of Ham (giants and dragons) and Smith of Wooden Major (elves) Very Happy

I love the Hobbit too. And LOTR. And the short stories Farmer Giles of Ham, Tree and Leaf and Smith of Wooden Major.

I grew up in Nigeria. We had no TV. I lived for our fortnightly family expeditions to the library in the next town. That's where I first discovered Tolkien.

Where abouts in Nigeria? My parents were married in Onitcha ?sp and my older sister was born there. Smile

Gilraen, we lived in a small town called Zaria, in the north of Nigeria. My father went there to help establish the faculty of law at the university there.

More recently, I've also lived in Belfast.

My Dad was a teacher there from 1961 to 1964 my mum joined him 6 months later. She was in the Civil Service in Dublin and had to work 6 months notice to get her marriage 'grant', she wasn't allowed to work when she was married. Rolling Eyes

They returned to Dublin for my sister to have heart surgery (side effect of Down's syndrome) and then went to Ghana where my brother and I were born. They came back to Ireland and moved in 1969 to N Ireland where they lived until recently (mum diesd 5 years ago and my dad later remarried and moved to USA).

Isn't life funny!

How did you like Belfast?

PS Piratepurls apologies for the threadjack Embarassed

We were in Zaria from 1973 to 1980 - minus 9 months in 1977/78. We
had a very happy childhood there.

I loved Belfast too. Went there from Pakistan when my DH was offered a training post at the city hospital. We were there 6 and a half years. I found it hard at first cos I didn't know a soul nor how things worked, and I had 2 kids under 3 !!

But I was gutted when we had to leave( again, my DH got a post elsewhere)

Apologies from me too Piratepurls !
