Tempest Knitalong anybody???I've been wanting to knit Tempest nsince I saw it published in Knitty. I was stashdiving yesterday and thought that one of the club yarns from natalie would be perfect for this!!!!! One skein is a hot pink, and the other fruit salad colours......yummy!!!!!
Anybody up for a knitalong??
n
A couple of my non CTnY customers are thinking about this too.
It's a really pretty pattern.
n
mogiebear
Like the pattern , but will have to go stash-diving. Some of us need more than one skein for the main colour
Auntie Noo
I might be tempted to think about it - I have 2 skeins of bushcraft so I could do a stripeless version!
terri
Here are my colour options
I was thinking the coloours go together all along the line, and now I'm not sure which ones to use I have some aracunia that would go together nicely too
pictish
Yeah 1 & 2 are good, 2 & 3 as well and 4 & 5!!!! Lots of choice
GrannySmith
Wow look at those colours, for summer I would go for the two on the far left. For something a bit posher I would go for the same plain pink and the middle one and the blues - well the blues are fab, so if I was you, you would need to knit two cardigans ....
terri
My first plan was 1 and 2, but then I saw 3 and thought that would go too......... I think I will use 1 and 2 as I have some fyberspates very similar to 1, but noting else like 3.... does that make sense???
I really like the blue too though, and I have some greens that go together very nicely aswell
FatCat
wow, lovely colours! I agree with Pictish's options on what goes together
I'm quite tempted by Tempest, ooh, too many temps in there, but I'd need more than one skein for my main colours and I never buy more than one of each I really like the shape of it though so I could perhaps do a plain version in 4-ply, it doesn't have to be sock yarn does it?
cazzie
I'll be up for it
Love your colours Terri.
I've got some NDS yarn stashed away ready - I'm planning on departing from the stripes and try for a shaded approach in wider bands - have 5 or 6 blues ready - light thro dark blues.
I'm trying very hard not to buy much yarn and to find ways of using up my sock yarn mountain - this will be my third project (all in the cardi line). Just need to finish them.
I have cast on a cardi in some of n's sock yarns - will post a piccie up later.
pictish
It doesn't have to be sock yarn FC - the pattern is really for a thickish laceweight!! And guage is very loose for that weight - 20st.
cazzie
I guess you could even use DK as long as you got the guage right?
GrannySmith
I was looking at a certain cashsoft that I have just bought and the tension is very similiar 22 sts against 20 sts for the tempest, so go down to a 3.75mm needle and I bet it comes out the same, just a much thicker fabric
Would have to try it first
Auntie Noo
Lovely colours Terri! - I think 1 and 2 to brighten the mood and make the sun shine whatever!!!
terri
I've gone with 1 and 2!!!! They're balled up ready to go later on today if I get my monkey sock finished
Looking forward to seeing the cardi you've cast on cazzie!!!!
FatCat
yay, that'll look fab Terri!
I've been mulling over this one and, ignoring the other 2 4-ply sweaters I have on the go I might be up for it. Can I ask a question about sizing? I'm a 34AA, size 10/12 so as it says there's potentially some negative ease do you think I can get away with doing the 32 size rather than the 35? That would mean I'd have enough yarn too, which would be handy. Advice? I don't really understand negative ease ....
terri
Yeah, I would have thought the 32 would be fine Fatcat Its only 2" less isn't it, and it looks very fitted on the pattern, she says negative ease is good..........should look great
Auntie Noo
I'm umming and ahhing on the size too FC. The widest part of my chest is 33 1/2 ". So the 32" would give me and 1 1/2" negative ease...... i.e. it will need to stretch one and a half inches to fit round me which will be a really lovely fit, but might be a bit too much for a summer cardi. But 35" will look baggy.
What I think I'll do is knit the 32" back and see what measurements it actually comes out to then maybe adjust the front to make it perfect!!!
pictish
I'm in a quandary too Just measuring myself I am 36" chest but 38" tum If I do the 3rd size that would be right for the chest but maybe not for the tum although I could leave the bottom buttons open But I still need just a bit over 1 ball of sock yarn for the MC I have some Ranco but the two hanks of the same colour and dye lot are very different
I'm going to swatch using the Ranco and see what it looks like cos I might just do a stripey version using something closer to the 20st guage.
CJ
Oh, I love that cardigan too. I'll have a look and see what matching or not 4ply I have.
Maybe I can spin some up. *sniggers at that silly idea* given the current speed of my spinning.
FatCat
well, glad it's not just me umming and ahhing about it! Thanks for the advice, I think I'll try the 32, I do like my summer cardis fitted.
OK, next dumb question I'm really not very with it today! It won't matter if the two yarns are different compositions or brands? So long as they knit to the right tension - yes? (Ow, brain, hurting ... )
What colour is your Ranco Pictish?
CJ
terri, your colours are lovely. I agree with pictish and fC too
Auntie Noo
I would think two diff yarns will be ok FC - only thing I would be aware of is they need to both wash the same!
FatCat
ah yes Noo, good thinking! I'll check that And CJ, yay, g'wan, you could spin a bit, then knit it, then spin the next bit. I reckon you can definitely do it
Just had a better look at the pattern, it does say under Pattern Notes that the fronts are bigger than the back to allow for more ease in the bust, and looking at the schematic for the 32 inch size, it actually works out at 16in across the back but 17 across the front, so 33 not 32. So I'm definitely going to go for that size
I may have to do some serious stashdiving myself in the next few days for this one
CJ
I'm not sure I can get 4ply yet consistently. It would be worth a try though, I have lots of co-ordinating colours, although I'm not sure how much of one colour I'd need.
I do have 120z of spunky eclectic on the way in natural, blue, brown colour, and could get some more natural brown BFL - hmm, tempting. It would be cheaper to spin it I'm sure.
CJ
I think I'll go for the 35" one, as I'm definately 34.5" bust and don't want it ridiculously tight, not after having two kids
pictish
My Ranco is dark blue and blue/turquoise FC BUT I'm having problems getting guage - have gone up to 4.5mm and still way off but it's a very open fabric
The Ranco is gorgeous tho - have only used it for socks so far - I might if all else fails just get another hank and do a copy of this at a tighter guage - it's just a plain round neck cardi with stripes and a bit of waist shaping *she says over-confidently*
FatCat
cor, sounds gorgeous! I haven't actually bought any Ranco yet - hmm, that's rather remiss of me, wonder how that's happened?
I hope you can get the gauge sorted, but I don't think you're being overconfident - like you say, plain round neck cardi with some waist shaping. What can go wrong? Go for it!
I need to finish a sock (or two) but I might look at yarns and gauge for this at the weekend, possibly before. Slightly worried that my colour sense might not be as good as everyone else's and you'll all see what I've chosen (which I'll think are fabulous together) and you'll be polite while thinking how awful it looks!
pictish
Nah we'll just be frank and tell you Anyway you have excellent colour sense what are you talking about
The Ranco is lovely to knit with and is very variegated rather than stripey in socks - I think you will like it - it's like a springier version of Curious Yarns or Fyberspates sock - quite a 'woolly' feel to it. It's amazing value at £7.99 cos it's all kettle dyed.
terri
I've done a few rows and its really stretchy!!!!! so thinking smaller sizes for peeps will be fine
I can't decide whether to use the pink with thw poinky/yellow or the pinky/blue/green
cazzie
Both colours sound lovely - the blue mix with the pink sounds nice though
pictish
I've given up on the Ranco and trying alpaca now - it might just end up as a stripey alpaca cardi similar in style just in the spirit of Tempest
jessica
oh b.........................r i really want to join in this one but have absolutely no sock yarn or 4ply, knitted all my socks up!!. Anyone got anything that matches to get rid of i might be your girl. Not bright pink though, mixture would be good.
FatCat
I had a brainwave about what yarn to use last night and once I'd thought of it I just had to dig it out, swatch, cast on .... you know how it is It knits up really quickly, honestly, this was only a few hours yesterday evening Although I did do a bit of "just one more stripe ..."
It's Sunbeam St Ives sock yarn, the dark brown is 3106 Pheasant and the light brown is 3095 Fenland. They are both a bit tweedy not just plain. What do you think? I like it, but I can't decide whether it looks classy, like chocolate and caramel, or just reminiscent of light poo and dark poo
jessica
oh very classy I think, beautiful colours, well done.
terri
It looks really nice!!!!!!
I'll take a piccie of mine just now. It does knit up quick doesn't it, I spent a couple of hours last night after I grafted my sock
pictish
Oh I definitely like it FC - lovely colours together!!
terri
Is yours curling up fatcat???? mine is, loads!!!! hopefully should be ok after its blocked
FatCat
Thanks! I'll stick with it then, and it has the benefit of being machine-washable
Wow, Terri, that is GORGEOUS! Those colours are just fabulous together! Yes, mine's curling up loads too, but there's an edging to put on it isn't there, which might help, along with the blocking
pictish
Fantastic terri!!!!! What size needles are you using cos I just can't get guage - am trying Opal now It might be a cardigan of many colours
terri
I'm using 4mm and the gauge is ok. It's really stretchy so I'm sure you could block to gauge anyway
It will be nice in opal I think! The yarn yard is knitting up nicely
FatCat
I'm also on 4mm and on gauge, and it is really stretchy isn't it? I'm glad I went for the 32 size, I'm sure it'll be fine, if not a bit big What size are you doing Terri?
I'm not doing the slip stitch at the beginning of the rows, I did it on the first few and it was giving me a baggy edge not a tight one And I know that a normal stocking stitch edge is usually fine for me for seaming.
What Opal are you trying Pictish?
terri
I'm doing the 31", I think it will be fine cos of the stretchiness
Just about to crack on with a bit more of it today whilst watching Harry Potter
pictish
I was trying to match up 2 Opals but they were different thicknesses for some reason and looking funny. But have just realised I am expecting a consignment of YY sock yarn possibly today and it's in greens and blues so might be able to match up something out of that.
I think I seem to knit very tightly cos I was on 4.5mm and still about 24st
I never do that slip stitch edging at the beginning of a row for the same reason as you FC!!
terri
you'll find something Ali, I'm sure
I was just thinking about the 4ply matchmaker I got from you in chocolate, would look nice with the browny sock town and country I have......... I keep thinking of this in loads of differant colour combinations
pictish
Oooh yes definitely!!! That would be lovely
My YY wool has come and is gorgeous but there are too many colours in 3 skeins and not totally matching so not right for this - still on the hunt!! Am thinking of alpaca now - maybe some lime and cream
n
Ali I might be able to match something for you....
n
pictish
Aww thanks Natalie - that's really kind!!! But do you know what? I really fancy the Bonny as socks All 3 of them I DID toy with the idea of nabbing the other 'Tay' but I think this one will make great man-socks for Mr P
In fact I've cast on some socks already with Speyside for me

FatCat

| terri wrote: | I keep thinking of this in loads of differant colour combinations |
Me too! I think I've mentally made about six now If this first one comes out anything like as nice a fit as the pic in the pattern then I might well have to make at least one more, with more adventurous colours
Ali, I'm also sure you'll find something. LOL that you "just realised" that a YY parcel might be on it's way Sounds like fab yarn, looking forward to the socks pics
pictish
I trust you don't think I buy SO MUCH I lose track of my parcels It was 'sock yarn' in my mind you see
cazzie

Terri and FatCat - they both look fab

KnittingLadybird

lovely colour choices girls...looks like I might have to add this to the queue too...do you think 2 balls of opal ladybird would work? one ball is definitely lighter and less reddy than the other but it could be a feature (There's no way I could work out how to stripe both together)
cazzie
I think Ladybird would be lovely - could you stripe with a black sock yarn? Or would the 2 balls be enough?
KnittingLadybird
I have enough yardage with the 2 balls of ladybird but obviously I wont be able to do the 'set stripe' pattern. maybe I shouldn't bother even trying to match up the stripes...just not sure what to about the distinct colour difference between the 2 balls...i'm dithering about doing the darker colour for the fronts and if I do the fronts at the same time they probably would match....then I colud use the paler for the back and just do whatever for the sleeves.
Maybe I should just get on with it
FatCat
Ooh, I think the two ladybirds together will look good! You could try using them as if they were two completely different colourways, and alternate them on the stripes, so you'd get slightly darker stripes and slightly lighter ones.
I had a thought about this pattern - instead of alternating colours what about using one yarn and changing the stitch pattern for the stripes instead? Reverse stocking stitch or moss stitch or something? Which would still give the striping effect but more subtly?
terri
I think the ladybird colours will look good Linz Give it a whirl and see how it turns out
I finished the back last nigth and up to the shaping on the left front
FatCat
wow, Terri, you're whizzing along! I haven't done anything more on mine, need to finish a sock for Mr FC first But that should be done tonight so I can work on Tempest at the weekend
FatCat
quick update on mine - I've done the back and both the fronts and started on a sleeve. This pattern is so straightforward - all the shapings happen at the start of a stripe or within a stripe, no need for a row counter even It's really uncomplicated
terri
Fab Fatcat!!! I've got half a sleeve left to do and then the bands. I'm starting to worry that I won't have enough of my MC though
jessica
Well done girls I am still trying to find some yarn to do this. Have just emailed the lovely Janette to see what she has in two tones of Arunco, she has some nearly plain ones. I am wondering how your yardages are going though cos i think i would need to knit the 35 as i am quite busty.
terri
I'll weigh what I have left and work out how many yards I've used jessica, will be tonight at the earliest though

Have you looked on Ravelry? Have a feeling I saw your colours on there - cant remember if they were up for sale or swop - I'm at work now so cant go in and check properly... (have to sneak on here)
I'm still knitting my sock yarn one - have decided to wait and cast on Tempest when I see how this one turns out.
terri
All the pieces are knitted now and I think I'll have plenty...... theres only the bands and hem to do, but thanks anyway cazzie
I've spent the last two hours weaving in the ends from the stripes
cazzie
No problem - glad you had enough. Thats quick knitting - look forward to piccies in due course
terri
I had hoped it would be finished and blocking now, but the sewn bind off has taken me ages cos I wasn't sure how much yarn I would need and it kept getting tangled Should finish making up in the morning and hopefully have it blocking in the afternoon
FatCat
my word Terri That was really quick. You're making it up first and then blocking it? I might block the pieces of mine first and then do the sewing. Never done a sewn bind-off before, so that'll be a challenge for me. When I get to it - kind of lost interest a bit now that I've only got a sleeve and a half to do Glad you were OK on the yardage too.
Really looking forward to seeing yours all finished
Jessica, did you decide on your yarn? Re my yardage, I'm sorry, I don't have scales or anything useful like that. The St Ives I'm using is shorter on yardage than some other sock yarns, so I know I'll need to start on a third ball of my MC for the 32 size. (Sorry again, not very useful, I don't have a ball band to hand for the yardage )

Just knitted my swatch in Ranco - but still can't decide on which colours to use or to knit a 37" or 39"
Current theme - knitting which isn't working : going to be short on yarn for wrapover
Bought freedom sincere yesterday for swing jacket , but decided it wasn't the right colour before I got home.
Scarf for dh is going to be too short - frog or not?
Started socks on 2 circs - but no way pattern can be easily fitted into 2 equal bits - no dpns right size frogged.
Just want to buy more sock yarn to cheer me up - but done that already this week
Enough threadjacking!
Looking forward to pics of finished Tempests.
terri
I'll press the pieces first fatcat, and then once its all done, I'll wash it and pin it out to dry iyswim.......
If I make another......or should I say when...... I'll do it in the round up to the armholes and use a provisional cast on for the hem atv the bottom! I hate picking up so many stitches
I still have the hem to do, I'm wanting to cast it aside and start something new though, which is typical of me, I must say
terri
Finished. I did have a bit of the MC left, but I doubt it would have been enough for the second size tbh...............
It stretches right across my body without any problem, but I think I would need to change the buttons if I wanted to wear it fastened, as they're too small to keep it from popping open iyswim

That was an unbelievable fast knit.

omg thats fab! I haven't even started this yet ( I just can't work out how to stripe the 2 balls of ladybird)
So...i'm going to try and get some plain black for the MC and use the ladybird as contrast, hopefully that will be easier
(Although I may buy 2 new colours instead)
mogiebear
That's fab , Terri. Really quick, too. Have you started another one yet.
Washed and blocked my Ranco swatches - makes a big difference, doesn't it? Got gauge with 4mm, but still haven't decided on colours /size yet.
Limeygreen with dark green stripes or silvery grey with either white, blue, purple stripes or red .
terri
Not yet mogiebear
I have been thinking of making one with some jaeger 4ply in chocolate, striped with some town and country sock yarn from stash, its chocolates and cream colours, I htink that would be nice for the autumn
I need to learn how to do buttonheols better though, I'm useless at them
Thanks for all the compliments guys

I've been mulling over whether perhaps to put a zip in mine rather than have buttons, but I'm not sure whether it'll be too heavy for the fabric IYKWIM Maybe buttons would be best and I should stick with the pattern as set? Any thoughts, suggestions, advice would be appreciated
Auntie Noo
I think the possible problem with a zip FC is that as the fabric is so stretchy - the zip won't be, so you might end up with it all different lengths??
terri
I wouldn't go for a zip either tbh fatcat, the finished thing is very light compared to what you'd normaly expect for a cardi, ad the zip would probably hang on it like a weight
FatCat
cheers girls, that's pretty much what I was thinking It was a daft idea in the cold light of today's morning No zip for me then, buttons it is! Thank you!

These are all looking fab girlies
Am thinking of making one for myself - though not striped. Stripes do not look good when there's such a long way to go round But, I've got some M&S cardis that are a similarish shape - so thought I'd experiment. Maybe all variagated or maybe just plain.
