Target Practice socks, help with yarn choice?

I saw the Target Practice socks on Knitty today and I'm itching to cast on.  But, not a decisive day for me, can't choose a yarn  Rolling Eyes -  help?

I've got it down to these five.  But I can't decide whether to go for something with a wider range of colours (the top three here) or something that's more subtle (the bottom three).  Let alone which to choose from there!  Help me choose, pleeeeeeaaasse?   Very Happy

Top row, L to R - Yarn Yard Wheelie Bin (I think), Fyberspates Dream Yarn Grenada and another Yarn Yard, unnamed.

Bottom row, L to R - Cherry Tree Hill Caribou Creek and Indie Dyer Nightshade.

Bum, should've done this as a poll shouldn't I?  Rolling Eyes Sorry  Sad
KnittingLadybird

I'd go for the one in the middle on the top row...I can just see the circle bit looking like a blazing summer sun!
terri

I like the caribou creek foir it, probably just enough colour variation Confused
Auntie Noo

I was looking at the pattern for those yesterday they look cool!    I'd personally go for something a bit more subtle - the bottom left one is lovely.

So far we're not helping are we?!
KnittingLadybird

tee hee!
I like the bottom left too Very Happy
FatCat

no ... it's helpful!  Out of the 3 replies so far 2 are going for the same thing  Shocked  I did think after I posted that you'd all choose different ones  Rolling Eyes

Edited cos of pesky KLB  Rolling Eyes  Laughing  4 replies, 3 for the same thing now  Laughing
KnittingLadybird

Wink

It's just my preference for things a bit more reddy/pinky I guess!
Auntie Noo

Terri and i must have posted at the same time, 2 out of 3 ain't bad (isn't that a song or something?)
Aknita

Wheelie Bin became a FCS for me - now there's a surprise Wink - but it could knit up sort of camouflagy iyswim - not what you'd want with a target is it really, camouflage Laughing

Just to be awkward - I'm with Linz. But then I couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo, so I'd need a nice bright target.

eta pretty cool socks aren't they.
KnittingLadybird

Ha Ha (Nelson stylee off the Simpsons).

Dilemma time FC Very Happy

LOL!   ROFL

Camouflaguey might be OK, it's not as if I'm actually expecting people to be using my ankles for target practice  Shocked  Laughing

So, we've got 3 votes for the nice subtle CTH, and 2 for the nice bright Fyberspates.  Dilemma time indeed.  I'm more drawn towards either the Indie Dyer blue one or the bluey-purple YY.  Just to be contrary.  Told you decisions aren't my strong point at the moment.  Rolling Eyes
Wildpurl

Well I loved these socks! I'd go for more variegated as I think the pattern is designed to show that off to good advantage. So top 3, out of which my fave is the Fyberspates one as well, and no2 is the unnamed YY
FatCat

Excellent, a 50/50 split  Rolling Eyes  Laughing  Ideal.  Not   Laughing

Yeah, I'm kinda thinking the Fyberspates too.  The colours are lovely, and I like what KLB said about the sunburst effect.  Plus that's got quite short yardage, only 365m, so should be ideal for this without too much left over. (Well, that sort of thing needs to be taken into consideration!   Cool )
FatCat

So, any more for any more?   Very Happy  At the moment it's looking like it'll be the Fyberspates, but I won't be casting on until after the weekend so plenty of time to change my mind, or take more opinions into account.  Still all very welcome!

also, is anyone up for a KAL on this?  It seems quite a few people like the pattern so I might start one up anyhow  Razz

(edited for appalling spelling  Rolling Eyes )

...or more time to buy something else completely different!  Twisted Evil  ROFL

Norty Gill Laughing  Laughing

I'm voting for the Fyberspates tho I have to confess I don't much like the pattern and think the yarn would look much nicer as a pair of Monkeys Laughing  Laughing
loobyj

First person I thought of when I saw the pattern was you FC!!!

Choosing for myself I'd go Wheelie Bin, but for you I like the other YY.

KnittingLadybird

FC...it's over to you Laughing

Think David Frost on Through the Keyhole...i've nailed it!
FatCat

Oh Gill you are bad  Evil or Very Mad  I'm ignoring you, la la la la, can't hear you  Laughing

And trust you to go for something  completely different looby!   Rolling Eyes  Laughing

thank you everyone for your "help"  Wink  Laughing   I think it will be one of the top row and .....  drum roll ...... it will probably be the Fyberspates  Razz  (unless I change my mind  .....   Rolling Eyes Laughing )
pictish

Well if you ever fancy selling the Fyberspates let me know!!!! I have been scouring the web for some since I saw it yesterday Laughing  Laughing

I'm exactly the same don't worry Laughing

When I discovered that The Knittery had closed, I just HAD to buy three skeins from Socktopus. I hadn't known I'd needed it  Shocked

Laughing We were all normal people once upon a time weren't we Laughing  Laughing
Aknita

We were, weren't we. Then we all "met" each other and look what happened!
FatCat

LOL!   Laughing  You two are funny  Very Happy

Shh, don't tell anyone, but I'm not even that keen on the colours of the Fyberspates  Embarassed  I bought it because it's called Grenada and I've had fab holidays there  Rolling Eyes  Laughing  I'm rather too influenced by yarn shade names, I have trouble reconciling pattern names with yarn names - I couldn't bring myself to cast on a sock pattern called something mountains with a yarn called something watery or seasidey - it just didn't seem right  Confused

I'm not sure I'll be selling it but if I do then of course you'll be the first person I offer it to Ali  Very Happy
pictish

I can do a swap Wink I just love it heart

IKWYM about names tho - it has to fit Laughing
franney

Am i too late? I vote for the unnamed YY first and the Fyberspates second Very Happy
FatCat

Nope, you're not too late!  Any input still very very welcome!

Actually I might not be casting these on for a week or so, other knitting priorities have taken over  Rolling Eyes   And after I thought I'd decided on the Fyberspates it turns out I haven't and  I've dithering again  Rolling Eyes  Laughing
KnittingLadybird

I bet you go and buy something else entirely for these socks.....
pictish

Ooooh what are these 'knitting priorities'??  Laughing *is very nosy*
KnittingLadybird

lol @ Ali!
pictish

I don't get out much Laughing  Laughing

You took the words right out of my mouth fingers! Laughing

I have a couple of balls of red and white stripey Regia that i am thinking of making these socks in, just because i think the target will look brilliant! Laughing
FatCat

Well how terribly nosy of you all  Shocked  Laughing

OK, I need to finish a pair of socks for Mr FC by the end of this week.  I've nearly finished the first one but all of the second one still to do.  And I was hoping to get my Louisa sweater finished for the week after next, but I've got half of the back and both the sleeves to do as well as the sewing up.  But I've only got the rest of this week really for that too, because next week is very busy for me and I'm away with work stuff for some of it and away for all of the week after as well.

So, I need to do most of a pair of mansocks and most of a sweater in 4 evenings max.  Ain't gonna happen is it  Sad So, what with travelling and work and so on realistically I can't start the Target socks until the middle of May.  By which time I may well have bought some yarn specifically to make them  .....  Very Happy

Ooh Franney, that sounds interesting.  The targets will look great I think, and the main part of the sock will be stripey.  I was thinking too that the way they're constructed means that you could use a completely different yarn for the targets anyhow, or even different yarns for each target.
pictish

I feel better now!!! Laughing

I think you're right - too much pressure to get all that done in that time Confused Can't wait to see the Louisa jumper as it's in my queue as well Wink
franney

Blimey FC, as much faith as i have in your knitting abilities i think an almost pair of socks and an almost jumper is too much for 4 evenings!! Shocked
I'm presuming that when you're travelling you're driving and won't be able to knit the socks while you're zipping about? Of course, it's silly of me to say that out loud isn't it, you're a knitter, of course you've thought of that!! Rolling Eyes

I apologise for my stupidity, it gets the better of me sometimes! Wink

ROFL You're not thinking of buying more yarn FC, surely?? Very Happy

As for knitting the targets in another colour, i was thinking the same thing! Just think of the possibilites of using up all those leftovers without the need to knit a blankie Laughing
FatCat

I travel on public transport - trains, ferries etc - so I can (and do) usually work on socks then.  But there's no guarantee that I'll have room to knit on a train, they can be quite packed sometimes, so I'd rather get them done and dusted so I know that they're ready.  So I'll do them first and then re-evaluate the situation  Very Happy

I know I can't do it all  Sad  I'm not wildly optimistic or completely deluded though - I actually hadn't realised quite how little time I had until I wrote it down here  Rolling Eyes  Laughing

Oh yes, leftovers!  They'd be perfect for these socks wouldn't they  Very Happy  Although new yarn is always an option .....  Embarassed  Laughing
franney

A better solution would be to teach Mr.FC how to knit his own socks ROFL

Speaking of new sock wool.... i has squishy parcel Very Happy
FatCat

nah, I like knitting socks for him, and these are a surprise pair so that's not a plan I can go for at the moment.

I haz just been admiring  the contents of your squishy parcel (oo-er  Shocked  Laughing ) Very nice!   Very Happy
franney

Very Happy

Awww, surprise socks is such a nice surprise Cool
