Suggestions please. After I have finished my gloves, I want to knit myself some socks, I have done a couple of pair of fairly simple socks using 4 DPN, obviously I want to have a go at something a little bit more challenging. I have looked through loads of the sock patterns and nothing really grabs me so can anyone recommend some please?

What kind of thing do you like Libby - lacey or textured? - One of the most popular socks around is Monkey I haven't knit them myself but loads of people have!- The other thing you could do is have a look through our sock-a-month forums. We have had a challenge this year to knit one pair of socks a month (didn't do very well myself, but luckily others have been more worthy of the challenge) There are loads of photos of finished items in the monthly sub-forums.

ooh, you've come to the right place! Sock a Month is chock full of ideas!
Monkey is a good suggestion, as is Hedera, both by the same designer and very well written. The other sock patterns that Knitty have done are all listed here , if you've time for a browse.
If you've plenty of free time (and a fast internet connection!) then you could check out the sock patterns on Knitting Pattern Central , but you do have to click into each pattern to get an idea of what it is.
But whatever you decide to have a go at feel free to holler on here for help, we're a friendly bunch and rather addicted to the art of sock-making

Is there any reason to do a toe up sock apart form shortage of yarn? Are they easier, do people prefer them or what??

I quite like toe-up. It lets you use up the max amount of your sock yarn and you can try them on easily as you go too. The cast-on is a bit fiddly at first but I love doing socks this way.

i prefer doing toe up myself, for some reason when i do top down i get the yarn and stitches all twisting, cos i use 2 circs or magic loop, so for me its better to do toe up. i also like the fact that i can try them on and see how the pattern is looking.
