Stitchmarker question..made some - photo added!Have been asked for stitchmarkers by someone - but for someone who does crochet. Wondering how to do these as a closed ring obviously won't work. i've seen some which have more of a 'scroll' - a bit like an earring fitting I suppose - and others which use a lobster clip. Wondering what type is best. Thining about adding it as an option for my yarnimals.

I've made some with the lobster clips to use to mark rows. The other idea I had was to use split rings - like keyrings - but they might be difficult to get on and off without snagging.

I agree that the lobster clasps are great.
Alternatively:
You could make a large split ring (get some craft wire and wrap it round a 10mm knitting needle or bigger).
Add beads (bending the ends to keep them on).
You'll then have a beaded 'C' shape which can be slipped around the loop below the stitch being marked. The trick is to make it big enough that you can get it in around the stitch without snagging, but not so big that it falls out.
Just a thought!

Belly button rings?? would they work with a bead on?? The c ring has little balls on the ends, don't they. I don't have my belly button pierced but I think that's what they are like? Anyone else know?

Thanks! I might order a few lobster clasps to try out - but they are quite expensive. Going to try making some with an 'open' scrolly type shape as well.

Sprite, i have some lobster claws in various sizes, i'll send them on to you if you'd like to try them out?

a sort of clip thing would be great. I've been using a split marker today and it keeps dropping off so I lose it.

Mmm that's what worried me.
I'm not sure what size lobster clasps would be best- I use Palmer Metals and they do these ones:

Not sure if the size means the diameter of the 'hole' or the size of the whole thing

that sort of carabiner thingy looks great, I'd definately go for something like that!! It might also be worth seeing how heavy they are on yarn, so they don't tug down anything laceweight or light.

sharon, those are the type of clasps I use for my crochet...they are really good and don't catch at all...you can just place it round the actual stitch .
You can also make a marker with a lobster claw and use it to hold a few matching knitting markers too

Thanks to Franney for sending me some lobsters - I have had a go at making a couple of row markers. They seem to work ok - although I'm not sure I'd use them on very fine yarn - I did try one out on my sock-in-progress and it didn't seem too bad. I thought the smallest size lobsters were a bit too fiddly.
Now - would folk normally have these in pairs? I haven't used any - although the Rowan pattern I'm doing requires 2 row-markers soon (lucky that!!). Not sure whether to do them in pairs - probably be about £5.00 - and maybe an option of having one marker in a set of 5 done as a row-marker instead of a normal one? They do fit on a 3.25mm needles so they'd double-up as a 'normal' stitchmarker for socks and smaller things.
Any feedback appreciated as always.

Most of the crochet patterns I have used (mainly for those done in the round) only use the one marker, probably because you only have one stitch on the go...who knows. I suppose doing them inpairs makes sense (would you bother selling them single?)
I still think making one as part of set with the ring markers is a good one (even if I do say so myself lol;)) cos they do come in handy for keeping your markers together. Also there are plenty of knitters experimenting with crochet too

Whenever I make stitch markers for knitters I usually make a set of 4 (3 of one kind and a 4th for the row-marker) or a set of 6 (5 of one kind and a 5th for the row-marker). Have you checked out what other retailers are doing?
Yours are just too fabulous for words. I love the hefalumps!!!

Thanks! I've been doing sets of 5 markers - one of them different (i.e. 4 grey elephants and a pink elephant). I think I might just give people the option of a rowmarker and let them decide.

options are ALWAYS good IMO

Those are fab sprite, really gorgeous.
I have a set of stitchmarkers which have one row marker and 4 stitch markers, and the row marker acts as the holder for the others as well. I find them a really useful set (although there are no heffalumps in them!), so I think it would be a good option to offer.

I love those!!
At the moment for my hat, I'm using one marker to mark the last stitch in the round and one to mark the top of the chain I need to slip stitch to. But then I'm only a crochet beginner, and need assistance!!!

Ooh ok thanks. Maybe it's the 12mm ones I used then! I thought it was 9mm. Ho hum! I've emailed palmer metals to see how they measure theirs - why they don't just photograph them next to a rule I don't know!
