Socks that rock!!

I managed to "acquire" some of this from a lady destashing on ravelry. yay, it's very nice. Very Happy However, I decided to try and order just a meagre two skeins plus a pattern from the blue moon website today and nearly fainted at the shipping costs:- $24 - eeeeeek. Shocked Needless to say, I immediately cancelled the order. Laughing

Has anyone bought it elsewhere and for cheaper shipping? I really want some more, but refuse to pay that much. Twisted Evil
gilraen

There are other retailers that sell it. The Fold does but I'm not sure that they ship internationally. Tina at Blue Moon Fiber Arts says she is going to change the shipping cost like Sheri at Loopy Ewe did (max $16 but always less). Not sure when though. Have you a friend stateside? Shipping in US is approx $5...............plus cheaper shipping to here is?? not as much as $24.

Why not email her at the website and ask, the more who ask.............??

Keep an eye out on Ravelry for swaps too Smile

I was really spoilt recently in a swap on Ravelry. I had swapped a skein of Fyberspates for some DK sock yarn. However my 'partner' was ill so hadn't gotten round to posting it before mine reached her. I wasn't bothered as I knew what was going on & she said that she'd included a 'little extra'.

I was absolutely gob smacked to find that the 'little extra' was a skein of STR in Firebird Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Wow!!! That was a swap and a half!!! Smile

I'm not sure yet. It's mainly red with a bit of orange & pink but I've searched through the projects in STR & the orange is minimal (can you tell I can't stand orange???)

I've also got a beautiful skein in Undertoe that I swapped with Ali & I want to use that first. I'll swatch up & see how many stitches I get to the inch before I decide. I'm making bed socks from SKS & MSKS at the moment & can't wait until my Christmas knits are over to make a new pair for myself.

I'd just stroke it on a regular basis Laughing

How do you know who has what for swap on Ravelry apart from the swap forum when i never seem to find anyone who has anything worth swapping?
Also, would it be cheaper to order more STR - like with someone else - and then split the postage? Or is it $24 for two skeins and $48 for four, inwhich case it definitely isn't worth it! Wink
Alice

I spent more than a year wanting some of this and refusing to pay the postage.

Then I couldn't help it and I just did it so now I've got some...

And worse happened afterthat, I've joined their sock club..

I felt so guilty when I did it I've not been able to confess to anyone till now!
gilraen

Alice I'm in it this year and have signed up for next. But I'm debating about whether to do it again. I have 4 drawers of sock yarn! Smile

$24 is for up to 3 skeins but I had approx £15 added in custom charges the last time I ordered 3.
franney

WOW! Shocked
Why were there customs charges added Gilraen? Is it because it's froma store so it isn't marked as a gift?
Alice

The custom charges seem almost randomly applied here. But I usually err on the side of caution and order less to be absolutely sure of avoiding them. It's annoying when you might be only slightly over the cut-off level but the most annoying part is the fixed amount the post office charge for handling and paying the customs on your behalf regardless of how much over you are.

If it's over something quite low like £17 (including postage!!) if its from a company you have to pay and if it's marked as agift then the cut off is £30 again including postage.

At lease that's what it used to be...the cut-off levels may have changed and strangely it's not always applied.

I've found single balls of Noro Kureyon by looking at the stashes against that yarn. Swaps available are shown before the most recently added yarns & then I just pm'd them. Likewise I've got yarn in my trade/sell folder so that other people can find it.
franney

Ooooh, i never thought of doing it that way, just browsing through! Silly me! Embarassed
Piglottie

STR is very addictive, and I have fallen head over heels in love with their new Raven series. Appeals to the Goth girl in me Smile Luckily, a friend has ordered some on my behalf Smile as part of my Christmas present from MrP but when it arrives, I'm not allowed to see it until Christmas Day Shocked Sad I will be very glad when they sort the postage out as I need to get the rest of the Ravens, although I might send via a friend in the US to avoid the customs charges.

The cut off point is £18 for purchases, £36 for gifts. 3 skeins is $57 and I was charged on the excess, which isn't that much but the approx £8 charge the PO charges makes it awful! Shipping value isn't counted towards BTW.

Loopy Ewe charges $16 authorisation for shipping to your paypal account at checkout but there is always a cashback to paypal account for the excess. So long as I buy less that $34 from Sheri I never get charged and shipping invariably is less than $10 and takes 10 days to 2 weeks. Very Happy Small but more frequent packages lets me see and try out yarns without costing the earth. BMFA should take note!

I was once charge £8 for an item that with the exchange rate was £18 on the day I bought it, but less than a pound more when the PO checked it a week later by there exchange rate!!
franney

It's all rather complicated isn't it Confused

When I phoned the Customs and Excise about 2 years ago I was told shipping was included. I thought at the time that was a bit unfair so it looks as if it s been changed now. Good.

That is exactly what it states on the official website, after all shipping comes in many different forms! Smile
