Sirdar Just SoyaHas anyone else used this yarn and had problems? I'm finding it a total pig to knit with. I'm knitting a short sleeve top as a commission and I'm having "issues" with the yarn.
For a start, my tension (which I normally don't have problems with) is way off. The recommended tension is 22sts and 28 rows on 4mm needles. I had 20sts and 28 rows on 4mm so went down to 3.75mm, which gave me 21.5 sts and 29 rows. The stocking stitch fabric looks gappy and uneven - even DH mentioned it wasn't up to my usual standards. One ball I used went all "thin" halfway through which obviously showed up on the knitting and another one was short on yardage.
I think I may ring the company on Monday and explain the situation - I'm really not happy at sending in sub-standard work and there's only so many times you can frog work before it begins to look tatty. I think I'd rather admit defeat now before any more of my time gets sucked into this black hole!

Oh no - that sounds bad I haven't even seen this yet but I got a knitwell catalogue today and liked the patterns but might not try it now. What a shame - all that extra work for you too

For some bizarre reason I feel very dubious of soya.... I've never even knitted with it!
Is the garment for a photography commission Linda? If so I'd definitely be getting hold of Sirdar and speaking with them to find out if it's just the batch, or all of the stuff. What a shame though, after all the hard work you've put in as Ali says

Rowan Tapestry is a mix of Soya and wool and it is lovely!!! It feels like silk a bit.

I once knitted with some really soft and shiny acrylic that was ever so slippery and splitty and loose to knit... I have this unfounded view that soya would be like this to knit but have no idea why!! Daft eh?

I've used Rowan Tapestry to make a Clapotis. It is really soft and squishy on the ball and knits up nicely - not too splitty, but it is quite scratchy against the skin.
I didn't like the way the Clapotis came out - too narrow and the stripes were too regular - so I frogged it. Like the Sirdar Soy, Tapestry does look tatty when it's frogged, it goes all limp and loses some of it's sheen.
I used the frogged yarn to make a scarf, mitts, wrist and ear warmers. The colours come out much better on small objects but they are still scratchy - I think that's just the nature of soy based yarns.
I like my little extremity warmers but I wouldn't use Tapestry again.

Hmm, I'm not sure. I'm definitely going to ring them tomorrow and see what they say. I almost frogged it last night but I thought I'd hang on until I'd heard from them.

I bought some of the new Sirdar patterns and one of the front cover shots is a garment which looks very loosely knitted - I'll check what it's knitted in and get back in a mo.... hold on .....

It was 9024, a Just Bamboo pattern. I'm wary of bamboo as well....

The Just Bamboo is slippy-ish Debs and a bit gappy knitted up but the Baby Bamboo has wool in it and is really lovely in fact. I found the pure bamboo a bit fiddly.

I don't know why I'm worrying about it really cos I'm not going to buy any! How daft is that??

I've got some Rowan Bamboo and I had a few problems with that too, although less than with the Soya. I've just had another look at it, against a white background, and it doesn't look *too* bad. I did try to take a photo but my batteries died in my camera and I can't find the charger. Anyway, I think I'll check it again tomorrow just to be sure but I'm still going to ring them.
