Shoalwater
I am loving this pattern...now at row 52...using Cherry Pie from Yarnyard..gorgeous "feel" and colours. Knitting up nicely on 4.5 mm addi turbos

Ooh that is gorgeous! I love the colours I have had the pattern for a while now and this is sorely tempting me to start. But - I am making the Spring Things shawl at the moment I originally bought some laceweight silk with Shoalwater in mind which would be fab for summer, might have to be my next knit!

Wow, that's looking gorgeous. Love the way the colour knits up. Will one skein of Cherry pie be enough? The shawl looks quite big in the pic on GK.

I've got three as wanted to be sure I had enough...what's the yardage on Naralies skeins???
I'm quite tall, so wanted a long shawl. Think they say 1400 yards of 4 ply for shawl that's 40" deep and 80" wide..

Looks lovely, the colours are really pretty. Look forward to seeing the finished shawl

Looking good! It's a lovely pattern - I started making one - actually got pretty close to finishing it. It was going to be an xmas pressie for SIL but OH & I decided that the colours just weren't right - and one skein was quite different to the other 2 so it's languishing in a bag somewhere

wow, that's stunning, I love the colour. One day I may be up to this!!!

3 should just about cover it, her yarn has the same yardage as mine and if you look at my website under hand dyed sock yarn there is a picture of Hilarys shoalwater and that was done with 3 hanks.
Yours is looking lovely the colours are great

Thanks Chrissy, you got there before me.
There are 420m - ish on a hank. So you have approximately 1260m.
I love it. its showing the colours up well. It's a fairly bright yarn when you see it in its' not-rewound state, but the colours blend really well. As a sock it would knit as a stripe a bit like my April socks, but the shawl makes it look completely different.
Well done, looking forward to seeing progress as you get further into it.

I really am delighted with the yarn...enough colour to give the shawl depth but not too bright. Really pleased!!

I've decided to start mine this weekend (was going to finish my Candle Flame scarf first but its too wintery so it will have to wait about 6 months to get finished ). Yarn winding this afternoon. But I hope you are around Jackie as I've read the first bit and getting started is all new to me - the provisional cast on thing so if you can recommend any sites I would really appreciate it. Plus, when the pattern says 'rotate' is that just turn the knitting round? Maybe it will all become clearer when I actually start knitting it...

That looks great and I love the colour. I tried a Shoalwater ages ago but didn't like the way it was looking and abandoned it. Yours makes me think about starting again.

Thanks folks. Have had to put on a backburner making emergency slippers for a friend with BIG feet. All finished now, so back to Shoalwater. Iam delighted with the yarn and the pattern is good No rude words yet and that's good for me as I have the attention span of a Goldfish

just to say that I've just noticed on the Get Knitted Blog that they're about to start their own staff KAL trying out the pattern in different yarns. Might be interesting to keep an eye on? Or to share experience perhaps

3 hours, half a bar of Green and Blacks Milk Chocolate and Almond and seemingly half a ball of dishcloth cotton later I have nothing on the pins The annoying thing is, I actually understand the whole cast on bit and did it right the first time - but then, in a moment of complete and utter stupidity, decided to frog it because I didn't think it was neat enough (note to self: lace, especially in laceweight, always looks crap before being blocked!!!!). I am determined to cast on for this today though so after a brief break for some semblance of sanity to return, I shall try again
PS: If anyone is struggling with the cast on (if you aren't, what planet are you from? Zimmermann?) here are a few tips:
See Eunny's post here and scroll down to Invisible Crochet Cast on II http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit/2006/03/majoring_in_lace_part_iv.html
Use thickish yarn to do the crochet chain (I used dishcloth cotton which works really well) - I couldn't see the bumps very well on thinner yarn, thicker yarn you can see them very clearly.
Use straights (or dpns) not circs to cast on - life is complicated enough without including wiggling cable.
As a last resort, leave knitting, eat chocolate, moan on forum, return to knitting. Should help
|
Piglottie
|
Last point must have helped, because I'm now steaming along (apart from the fact that I read the chart wrong and was doing all ssk not k2tog as well so had to frog and start again!). This is the first time I've used charts when knitting and I'm actually doing OK with them.
Shall post a pic when there's a bit more to show

ok. Had to unpick (rude words) down to end of first 76 rows...as I kept getting equal amounts of stitches either side of midline stitch. Ticked off

This is me, so now you know what I look like from the back!!! I used 3 skeins of chrissys sock yarn and had a small ball the size of a walnut left, keep going, it took me 3 months of knitting but well worth it.

Oh no Jackie - not good! I'm not much further on, but have read that it has helped to use stitchmarkers for each repeat section bit (IFYSWIM ) - is it every 24 stitches? I'm ordering some simple little markers to do this in the hope it helps.

Well, I need another WIP like a hole in the head - but here it is anway! I cast on for shoalwater at the weekend after getting the Jitterbug yarn at our GK trip on Saturday. It's quite a bit brighter / more vibrant IRL. Hope this one turns out nice (it's my second attempt at shoalwater - almost finished the last one but the yarn colours just didn't work)

Thanks! I'm really pleased with the colours - I was so disappointed with my failed shoalwater (which is still OTN in a cupboard - I must frog it!) as I spent ages working on it. Must stick a lifeline in tonight and do a bit more.

ooh Sharon, that's looking fabulous! The Jitterbug is gorgeous! Nice stitchmarker too
I'm in on this KAL now too since GK on Saturday Might just ignore Kiri and cast this on in the next few days

Cast mine on last night (in Trekking XXL) and it's flying along! Well, so far anyhow. The rows are getting loooooonnnnggggeeerr and slower I'm just about to start the first repeat of rows 29-76
and a close up for colours etc:
I still think the colours are very seasidey, and I love them! But at the moment it's looking rather more like an army camouflage net! Hopefully it won't by the time it's finished and blocked

I think it looks lovely, very seasidey and not at all like army camouflage (the idea ). It will look quite different when blocked anyway!
I really like the colours, it does look like the colours that other lady at GK was using, and they are very pretty indeed.

Thank you!
Ahem, can I be a dunce and ask a stoopid question please? The pattern is for 4 weights of yarn - lace, fingering, sport and DK (listed in that order). Now, it says to work rows 29-76 a total of 4(4,3,2) times. I've assumed the first 4 is for lace, and then the second 4 is fingering, 3 times for sport and 2 for DK. Is that right? I can't see anywhere on the pattern that says that though
Second stoopid question (cos brain isn't working today) .... Trekking XXL is sock yarn so that's fingering weight, isn't it? (Hope so, I've gone with the yarn requirements and needle size for that ) So that's 4 times through those 48 rows? I had assumed so, but just need someone to tell me I'm right! (Or wrong perhaps ...)
TIA!
|
Piglottie
|
Thats how I understand it too FC. And sock yarn is fingering weight But hopefully someone with more lace experience than me will come along to confirm we are both doing it right
|
FatCat
|
Phew, thanks! Well if two of us think that's how it is then it must be right I reckon
Thanks PL!

Well, I've knitted on a bit more and the yarn is just not me (its beautiful yarn and beautiful colours so I have no idea why I'm not loving it ). I suppose its better to decide now when I'm only on the first pattern repeat than much later on. So, I shall be putting some CTH Merino Lace River Run in the Craft Room later (after a large G&T) in the hopes of raising some funds for the alternative yarn I've found (Piece of Beauty Seasilk although am still struggling with the amount its gonna cost ). Oh well, frog pond here I come...
|
chrissy
|
oh that is such a shame but it is best that you have decided so early on rather than knitting on. I hope you can find the right yarn at the right price, that seasilk is rather beautiful though
|
CJ
|
piglottie, that was the exact same yarn and colourway that I attempted my shoalwater in last year and frogged, so you're not alone.

Oooh, how freaky (or maybe not!) In theory, it looks like the perfect yarn for Shoalwater and I had no problem with the yarn itself. In fact, I think the Merino Lace is really nice for a first lace weight project as I found it incredibly easy to use. Its just that the colours were not me when knitted up
|
Auntie Noo
|
Oh that's rotten PL, still as everyone says it's better to decide now..... how's the G&T helping???
|
KnittingLadybird

hope you get funded for the seasilk PL...what a shame the colours weren't doing the do...i'll just hang around the craftmarket then, shall I? lol
|
Piglottie

Doing the do - thats so funny Linz (wasnt that from an 80s song?). Noo, I completely forgot about the G&T in my frantic search for a) another lace project and b) different yarn for Shoalwater. I'm going to knit Eunny's Print o the Waves in some gorgeous lace yarn from n at the Yarn Yard, and shall leave Shoalwater floundering until some alternative yarn is purchased!

I am so impressed with these shoalwaters and there colours, it's nearly making want to join in

oh PL, that's such a shame! But better to decide at this stage than carry on and absolutely hate the FO. I do hope you find the right yarn for it soon. And looking forward to seeing your Print O the Waves!

I didn't have a problem with the yarn either, it's lovely to use, but I was just too blind as a bat to knit with dark colours. I couldn't see what I was doing. Maybe I should really get my eyes tested.
How about anni's ocean shawl, that's a great confidence builder? I've only got about 20 more rows to go, then mine is done.

Ooh, CJ, any chance of a progress pic of the Ocean Shawl? Or have you posted one somewhere that I've missed? I wanna see it!

I thought I'd drag up this old thread, as I recently cast on for my shoalwater at last. I've now knit over 200sts, so it's a bit slow going each row, but hopefully I'll get there in the end. Although I think my eyes must be failing me, as you'll all laugh at the sight of me knitting this by headtorch. "n" you were right.
Here's a piccie of it so far, fingers crossed I don't live up to my crafty award.

GORGEOUS...and nowt wrong with knitting with a headtorch!!!

It's looking fabulous (I have a headtorch too....£1.50 from netto....and it has a flash setting lol...dunno why but it would make for interesting knitting )
|
CJ

Mine has a flash setting too - ooo er!!! actually mine is a bit blinding, it's a halogen one. I'm definately having eye trouble. I nearly frogged it and started again with a lighter colour, but then remembered murdo and her torch, plus "n"'s comment so dug my petzl out.
thanks.

@ the torch!! But if it stops you frogging you go for it
And it looks even MORE gorgeous knitted up

FatCat

It looks fab CJ! Headtorch is a great idea, maybe I need to get me one of those
My Shoalwater is officially hibernating, might not be back with us til the Spring .....
|
CJ

I've seen cheap versions of the headtorches somewhere, will have to ask DH where cos he mentioned them. they're handy for if you get down late from a walk and of course round the house too, especially in a power cut.
I did another 8 rows last night. I think that's going to be my absolute max per day now considering the time it took to knit those.
