Sharon penmann

I read the "sunne in splendour" by her last year, which is about the war of the roses period, and I loved it. I'm a big fan of historical fiction anyway but this book was amongst the best that I'd read. Anyway, I took on holiday with me "here be dragons" by the same author, and it was fantastic!!!!!! One of the best books I've read in a long time, so much so that I've ordered the next two books which complete the triology. Definately worht a look if you like british history or historical novels Very Happy

I have got The Sunne in Splendour sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read Very Happy

I am reading Cross Stitch by Diana Galvadon at the moment - a historical fiction novel, this time set in Scotland Very Happy

I agree totally with Terri - I've read all Sharon Penman's books apart from the murder mysteries and they are superb. Here Be Dragons is my favourite I think Cool

And Jo Crossstitch is fabulous too - really absorbing. Jamie Frazer is just a bit nice isn't he Razz But I have yet to get into the next in the series Confused

I am enjoying it Very Happy I was looking at the rest of D Gabaldon's books in a book shop yesterday, some of them are absolutely huge about 5 inches thick. Shocked

I am going to add Here Be Dragons to my wishlist as well Laughing

Thank you Terri - thats a very kind offer, but not sure when I would get round to reading it - sometimes it takes me ages to read a book and I know I would worry about getting it back Sad Confused

I can get a second hand one on Amazon for less than £2.

Thank you again for thinking of me. Very Happy

I've had to order the second in the trilogy "falls the shadow" second hand, it must be out of print I think Confused

I love the Sunne in Splendour, I didn't realise or maybe I don't remember there being other books I must look.

Terri have you read Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond series? A lot of the story are based in Scotland/ Berwick area. They would be my Desert Island books. Smile

The sunne in splendour si a stand alone title , but there are two trilogies, here be dragons, falls the shadow and the reckoning, and then another about eleanor of aquitaine, thats right is it ali???

I haven't read any of those books you mention gilraen, will have to look them up! I love reading anything where I recognise the places!!!!!
Catknit

Terri that's a relief, I thought I my memory was failing me, it happens occasionally Wink

I first read these D Dunnett 6 books when I was 15-16 years old. I have been re reading them every 6-7 years since. I get something new from them each time I read them. Lymond was ever my hero. Smile

The names of the books are all references to Chess Terri. If my memory serves me they are The Game of King's, Queen's Play, Disorderly Knights, Ringed Castle, Pawn in Frankincense and Checkmate. The stories are set across the end of the reign of Henry VIII to beginning of Elizabeth I reign. They take place in Scotland, England, France, Malta, North Africa, Constantinople and Russia. It is fascinating to read about places not normally written about. Dorothy Dunnett took nearly 20 years writing these books she researched them so well

Mastermind had someone once who had them as their specialised subject............

Yeah there is another series which starts with Stephen and Matilda - When Christ and His Saints Slept - in the same period as the Cadfael books - I loved that. Then the second is called Time and Chance about Eleanor of Aquitaine and there is to be a third but Sharon Penman suffers from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME and she has only written the shorter historical mystery ones recently - I think the first of those is The Queen's Man and they are set in the time of Eleanor too.

Here Be Dragons is a LOVELY book - very moving and romantic and makes you wish you were Welsh Laughing

I've read, and loved, Sunne in Splendour - but years ago.... still on the shelf, must read it again and then explore the others, I could do with something new to get my teeth into! Thanks for the prompt Terri Very Happy

I've got the whole Diana Gabaldon double trilogy - I love them. Very Happy
