Reading Charts me again!!
I have only ever read a chart which has all the rows on it and I have read it from the bottom right corner (starting Row 1) then left corner (row 2).
So again stupid question (hopefully the last one today) is if the chart only shows even numbers eg starting at row 2 do you start reading bottom left hand corner?
God Im really confused after writing that out I hope someone will be able to understand that!!

Hmm, that's a good question! Are there any "helpful directions" anywhere associated with that particular pattern?

Ok there are no written instructions other than:
With MC, CO42 sts (counts as row 1 of Chart 1)
Begin chart:
Row 2: follow chart in MC
Row 3: Purl in CC
Row 4: Follow chart in CC
Row 5: Purl in MC
Repeat row 2 -5 through row 342 of Chart 1, preceding each row from chart with a plain row of purl in same colour.
When you look at the chart there is only rows 2, 4, 6, 8 etc
I think I shoudl stick to toys

Would the chart work in either direction -is it symmetrical ? If it is, then it doesn't matter which way it is read.
It looks as if odd numbered rows are always purl, and the colour is determined by the colour in the preceding row (ie it changes on the purl rows).

The pattern is not symmetrical.
I understand the colour changes its just two rows of each colour. Its the which way to read the chart that gets me
All charts I have done (which is only 2 btw) they have had all the rows shown!

I'm thinking that perhaps it doesn't matter so long as you always do it the same way, if the chart is for colour changes only, or a switch from plain to purl.
If it is for lace and cables then I think a swatch to find out is the best option
Thinking further, I suggest you read the even numbered rows the way you would if every row was charted.

It sounds as if left to right?? (as long as not knitting in the round)

Would it matter which way you read the chart, so long as you worked each row the same way, usually with lace the right side row is worked R-L, wrong side L-R, the same way as you knit it on the needles.

I'm with them!
I'd read the chart from left to right, as that's where i'd be reading it from had i been following a chart for the odd rows cos they'd be right to left, right?
I'd also say it doesn't matter which way you read it as long as you always do it in the same direction
