Posh Yarns Arabella Help!I got some of this for Christmas..it is gorgeous and feels divine! However, it is supposed to be cobweb weight which I was under the impression was super fine...I wound it today in readiness for the pattern and addi lace circs I bought at GK yesterday and I am very confused (I really should have wound it and taken it with me!! )!! When I was winding it I noticed it was plied or twisted (whichever it is!) into two distinct threads that seem to come apart...and those were made up of another two threads which didn't come apart as easily....so....have I made a huge mistake by winding it as it..and should I have somehow, although I haven't a clue how I would have done it without getting in a right old state, split the two threads up?? My impression of it was, that as is it looks a bit thick for cobweb...it isn't as thick as 4 ply sock wool....about half the thickness which I thought was like a normal laceweight should be!?! I have never used lace yarn before so am very confused as to if I have done something wrong! Has anyone ever used this before??
HERE is a link with a pic on the PY website and HERE is a link to a pic of my Arabella with some standard 4 ply sock yarn for comparison!

I can't imagine two threads would be plied together Sarah and looking at the piccy it looks fine but have never had it before. I must say tho I thought cobweb lace is KSH sort of thickness I think I'll just shut up now cos I haven't a clue have I

It looks like two threads are plied together on the PY site too. I have knit with other lace weight and that has threads twisted together too, think if you knit with a single ply it affects the way the knitted fabric lies.

Ali..thats what I thought too! So, Nevisknittier, should I just knit with it as it comes from the ball I've wound...the threads when untwisted are definitely a little crinkly!??!

Even the thinnest of yarns - like the Gossamer ones on Heirloom Knitting - are made up of at least 2 plys. They have to ply it otherwise your knitting would go sideways at an angel when it was finished.
This is becuse it is spun in one direction, then the 2 single threads are plyed together in the opposite direction. The 'sideways pull' of the two single threads become 'balanced' and equal each other out so there is no distortion of your finished item.
Clear as mud???
The cobweb Arabella should be as thin or thinner than the merino from natalie that I showed you yesterday, but still have 2 plyes.

It's definitely thicker Claire! I'd say about twice the thickness..I wish I'd bought it yesterday!

Id knit it as it came, but if in doubt, knit a swatch to see if its knitting to the size you want. Isnt there something where you can see how many wraps per inch to get thickness of yarns. no experience of this, just seen it on another forum.

I worked with Arabella last year (3mm) and it was the finest yarn PY sold having 14m/g... I have to say my Arabella did not look like yours.....
you can just about see my yarn at the bottom....
please don't think me rude but have you wound both ends yogether in effect doubling the yarn up?

Hi Sarah
I've had a look at the photo, and can tell you that that yarn is not Arabella. Something has gone awry somewhere! Did you get it directly from us, and was it labelled?

OK..Sorry Dee and EVERYONE who has helped and explained how it all works...ignore me.. ..blame my pregnancy hormones!! I have just phoned my friend and she says she has just checked her emails and it was the Cashmere/Angora Seraphina...not the Arabella! However..she still says she thinks it was a cobweb weight....but I can't check as the PY website has all changed now since it was bought!! Can you tell me anything about the Seraphina Dee...is it cobweb or lace, how many metres etc as it didn't come with a label when I opened the present, and my friend says it was labeless when it got to her as well!
Derr....don't you have it when you make a right prat of yourself!

Nobody will think you a prat...I get confused all the time about what yarn is what...think it's an indication that I may have rather a lot of it

Seraphina is a laceweight 100g has 630 metres (so 6.3 m/g) it's similar to the Sophia & Eva currently available... it's made up of 15% cashmere, 55% merino, 15% silk & 15% angora
you're not a prat at all Blossom...

Thank you Murdo, gilraen and Littleberry! I hadn't looked on the cashmere/angora section...honestly I really am not thinking straight at the mo! At least I do have enough..by about 90 yards...to do the Heartstrings Light Up My Life scarf pattern I bought yesterday...although I bought 3.75mm addi lace needles instead of the 4mm suggested in the pattern, I don't think it will make that much difference!!

Blossom I saw the pattern you bought yesterday and I think your yarn will do it wonderfully With a rectangular stole/scarf I think you can get away with different weights - not that I have ever done one - but have seen pictures of them and they look great.
You could always play around with needle sizes as well to see the effect

I am soooo keen to try my new gold and red lace circs...3.75mm isn't too far off 4mm really...but I have my Options set coming so I can always use a 4mm in those when they arrive...they are supposed to be nice and pointy!
I think it will look lovely too Jo...the yarn is just GORGEOUS...it is so soft and touchable and I've got a much better idea of the lovely colours in it now it's been wound into a ball...it's the Mulberry colourway but it's a little lighter in places! I am so looking forward to knitting with it!

Thanks!
I hadn't even heard of this forum until I saw it in my site stats. Now, I want to sit down for a few hours and stuff myself on archived posts. I'll need a large pot of tea for that.
