Plying on spinning wheel - I need help

Yes I've already spun 100gr of BFL since yesterday. Have had a go at plying and got two problems.

First, the yarn was being spun but not winding on to the bobbin, then the bobbin got moving but the yarn is now not being twisted enough. What do  Ido. Only got 4 bobbins so desperate to get the singles on two of the bobbins off so I can see if it's any good and start on the next lot.

Any good spinning advice/trouble shooting websites? My wheel is an Ashford Traveller. have ordered the Ashford Spinning Book. Can't wait till it arrives. HOping it'll answer all my questions.

I'm amazed Pictish, it's so quick. Got a huge sack of undyed fibre delivered today. 10kg of merino, and merino pencil roving, merino/silk, tencel and bamboo. It's mainly for dyeing and selling but quite a bit will be for me I guess. Especially the merino/silk.  Very Happy

Found an article on plying on Spin Off website (ordered last 3 issues with my Asford book) and read some advice  on RAvelry. Off to try again soon.

Blimey!! 10kg Shocked  Laughing but at the rate you're going you'll be through that by Christmas Laughing Sounds lovely stuff.

Is there a spinning guild down there you could contact if all else fails?

My Spinner's Companion tells the following in troubleshooting section:

If the bobbin doesn't turn:
* maidens out of aligment - straighten and tighten
* needs lubrication - oil bobbin shaft and bearings
* brake tension too tight - loosen brake tension
*yarn caught on hook - unhook
*bobbin binds on shaft - try a new bobbin

and if the yarn doesn't wind on:
* scotch tension too loose - tighten brake band
* drive band around two spindle whorls (double drive) - put one loop around spindle whorl, other around bobbin whorl; whorls must be different sizes
*yarn caught on hook - unhook
* yarn tangled in orifice - spin finer, without extra twist, pull obstruction through

Is your leader yarn tight enough? I make a knot around bobbin and then wind it around the bobbin a few times so the leader starts to wind on bobbin nicely when I spin/ply. If the leader yarn isn't very tightly around bobbin, it doesn't wind on.
Hope this helps...

thank you Hanne. Will check all those. Wonder if it was my leader not being tight enough. Managed to get it going in the end and it wound on but didn't twist. Printed out a Spin Off on plying to help me.

Can't wait till my Spinning book arrives.

Since you have scotch tension, is your brake too tight? If the brake is too tight, wheel willl draw in yarn so fast that it doesn't have time to twist.

Think that might have been part of the problem. Got it working in hte end. Plyed about half hte singles. I've wound it into a hank and it's balanced  Very Happy  which really surprised me as  Iwas all over the place iwth the plying. But it's very loosely spun and very slubby. Not even at all. Pics tomorrow when the light is better. Instead of plying the 2nd half of the singles I started spinning a new lot of fibres instead. Yarn Yard BFL again in a lovely cherry and pink colour. Really struggled to get started. I'm rubbish at getting the fibre to latch on to the leader. Think Emily may have learnt some new words.  Embarassed  Embarassed
