Placement should this be in rogue kal?

OK...trying to figure out where to place tree I am including in the Rogue sweater...and Carol Vordemon I am not!!! Basically, to place motif centrally on front bit of sweater (which for my third size would mean a space of 83 stitches)...I need to work out how many stitches there are in tree roots chart. Can you have a quick look at this and see if you get the same as me (look at bottom row of bottom chart)

http://community.livejournal.com/advanced_knit/192971.html

...I make it ..
85 pattern stitches in first row of roots as...the charts are half charts and author says go right to left then BACK, missing out first stitch...so 43 plus 42 = 85?
BUT...bit I am not sure of is...the black squares mean "no stitch"..so just miss them and go onto next stitch when knitting BUT I do count them as part of total number of stitches in pattern repeat (similarly with the circle which means a YO) Need to get right or tree off centre Very Happy

Its hard to read that chart!!!!!! I hope you're blowing it up murdo Shocked

i think I would draw a line down the middle of the whole chart, just incase the roots aren't symetrical, and go from there! you need to count the black stitches too I think Confused
jacquie

The non-stitches are created later on in the process of creating the pattern, so they don't need to be taken into account for the placement. I make it a total ot 63 stitches - 31 right to left +1 in the centre + 31 going back again.
murdo

Ooo errr Shocked Confused
edit...ok oing to try a practice swatch Sad
murdo

ok..deffo 63 BUT according to chart key...moving right to left on chart on RIGHT side..gives you - as a purl stitch...this can't be right...as tree roots stand out ind this would give roots in recess, if you know what I mean...I'm losing will to live but wont be beaten

edit..rollocks...I think I know what I've done...when you lot did the hem on your Rogues and knitted up the edge to the live stitches...did you end up with the right hand side of work being on inside or outside of your circs...mines is on the outside ..as I curled up hem inside to attach to live stitches????????
melody yarns

Can you just shove everything through to the 'right' side Jackie? Like turning a sock inside out, IYSWIM?
murdo

erm...never thought of that Embarassed I've had to frog it all...tried it on...third Embarassed size swamped me Very Happy
jacquie

I think purl on the right side for the background ie reverse stocking stitch, is right, then the tree itself which is really just cables will stand out on it - like an aran pattern.
murdo

Think ypu must be right Jaqui...but looks as if on a flat ss background here????

murdo

melody yarns

There really is no answer to that, is there Beaker? :smug:
CJ

eeek, perhaps I'd better do the 2nd size if yours' was too big. Shocked
murdo

It was huge!!!!!
CJ

second size it is then, when I eventually get round to it. got the central park hoodie and maybe one other cable project to try before I go for it though. Laughing
murdo

Don't listen to me about size...5 minutes before the bells I measured hem of size 2....46 inches. Have to face the fact that my tension is PANTs . So frogged again. Well ticked off now Evil or Very Mad
murdo

ok...got hem sorted. Got going on main body...decoded row three of chart A...going great guns ...BUT...now have to frog back to hem. The tree chart rows have same number of boxes for first few rows, so I assumed same number of stitches. WRONG Confused
CJ

Oh no, poor you. Sad
