Pictures being used.

I found, by a fluke really, one of my pictures from my blog on someone elses. It wasn't a knitting blog. I thought that I wouldn't be worried but i am a bit annoyed about it!

Its got me a bit worried now as to how easy it is for people just to use your pictures. I have emailed them and politely asked them to take it off.

Someone on the knitty board suggested watermarking the pictures but that spoils the photos I think.

Anyone know about these things?!

I don't mind this but it is nice if people ask first. It is good netiquette and the least is that they link back to you.

There is a forum on Ravelry which knows some of this but the law is different from place to place. I think you need to have something posted about you owning your own photographs and they must not be reproduced without permission, or something like that. Smile

I suppose it is quite flattering that someone like your picture enough to use it. It is the asking first thing that is the way to go about it isn't it!

Absolutely! I have used other peoples pictures in the past but always after asking permission!! Very Happy

It's a problem I've had too - but pictures being used from my website  Rolling Eyes . Like you say, it would be nice if people asked if it was ok, and I wouldn't mind sharing them, but I've even found other online retailers using them on their sites which is why I now put ww on them. It's a bit like walking into a shop, helping yourself to a ball of wool and walking out without paying. I know I do my own photography, but I have to factor in my time and the programs I've bought to bring them up to scratch for the website etc.

I've had my pictures stolen too but even more annoying is when they also use my server rather than saving onto their own space!

I now add a watermark to most pictures that go onto my blog/Flickr/Ravelry. I know from long experience that most people don't realise it's wrong not to ask and assume anything on the internet is up for grabs. Some do know and do it anyway  Rolling Eyes I always put the logo near the edge of the pic so it doesn't detract from the content. I'd rather not feel I had to do it but now with Rav, it seems people are apt to use pictures without asking.

Do you have the option to add hotlink protection to your site? if you have a control panel interface it should be easy to enable it. I've had it on my sites for years - ever since the scary week when one of the new LotR films came out and the site ate 21Gb of bandwidth in a few days  Shocked People were happily hotlinking to large desktop wallpaper files from forums and the like and given that many were also downloading, it almost put the whole domain offline.

How do you watermark a picture? Don't think anyoen has used my pics and don't think I've ever used anyone elses. blog buttons I've used to link to people's blogs but that's different.

Someone on knitty said they use this site. I have not worked out how you do it.

The person that pinched my piccies took them down so that was good. I was a bit worried they would call me names or something!!!!!

Yes & I have to get DH to add sites to it when I join a new KAL as I keep forgetting & then wonder why my pics don't show up!

I haven't found any of my pics being used by anyone else on Ravelry yet but think I might one day. A lot have been used for the yarn by Ravelry which is totally ok but I don't think I'd like if someone just copied the image & used it as their own without asking.

Hee yes had a similar problem with a subdomain on the site, we couldn't work out why the pictures weren't showing up. Site owner error  Laughing

I've a number of my yarn photos being used on Rav which is fine, as they've either asked, or I've submitted them  Smile What alerted me to people taking photos was that it happened to a friend, with a very distinctive picture, again the person concerned didn't really have a clue about netiquette.

I just add some text to mine using Paint Shop Pro, I've got the text saved in a file and just copy it to each pic as I process them  Smile Takes no more time than I already spend cropping, resizing etc.

Can't imagine anyone would want to nick my pictures  Laughing but I am amazed that anyone would have the cheek to do it.  If I wanted someone else to see a picture I'd spotted, I would direct them to the original site, it wouldn't occur to me to use their picture.

But just for interest sake, I'd love to understand (in words of one sylable if poss  Embarassed ) what blueadt's comment

"........... when they also use my server rather than saving onto their own space! "

means?  Sorry but I'm a bit of a der brain with computery things, but I am trying to learn more, and I am worried that when I use a button (designed for others use) I might be doing something wrong.  Thanks

If you right click on an image & view properties you can see the image details including where it is 'held'.  If you copy all of that then you are using somebody elses' server space.  The correct thing to do would be to save the image onto your desktop, upload it onto photobucket or wherever  else you 'hold' images & then add it to your own site.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks blueadt, I think that makes sense I do save it in 'my pictures' on the computer, then upload to photobucket so I think I'm doing it right.
