Picking up and knitting an edge downwards?I have a cotton cardi WIP which at the time I started I wanted with a plain roll edge so it just starts in st st. But it is a tad short I think and am just wondering if I can lengthen it somehow by picking up and knitting down from the bottom edge with a border?? Anybody done this and do you just pick up and knit into every stitch?? I could just do garter stitch maybe as upside down rib would look odd wouldnt it? Or a picot type edge.

I did this for a jumper for my sister a few years ago.......... I don't have a photo unfortunately but I had to cut off the bottom and re-knit the rib longer. It looked fine. Just pick up every stitch and knit or rib or whatever. pop a lifeline around when you have picked up just in case you want to change the stitch!!

You could pick up every stitch and then decrease 10% of the stitches by knitting two together if you want the rib to pull in a bit. Rib looks fine knitted downards honest, you can't tell the difference.
This is the way I do ribs and hems/borders all the time when I fusion knit anything on the machine

Thanks both!!! You don't need a live edge then?? Just pick up in the normal way??
I like a rolled edge but it does creep up and I haven't allowed for that in this one

I've noticed some of Kim's designs are based on a border knit sideways then the main body is picked up from that - OK it's the opposite direction from what you're doing but it's the same principle

Yes, you could knit a sideways border and mattress stitch it on, good idea DC!
I always knit from a live edge but you probably don't need to at all. you'll just have a little ridge on the inside where you've picked up.

Not sure if this will help or not but I've made knitted garments longer by putting a few rounds of double crochet on, or any crochet stitch or edging would work. I used crochet hook a size smaller than the needle I'd knitted the garment with and dc-ed into every stitch. I didn't make the stitches live beforehand. Personally I find crochet less hassle for that kinda thing, but I know crochet isn't everyone's cup of tea
But I don't see why it wouldn't be the same with knitting - couldn't you just pick up stitches and knit them, as if you were picking up for a button or neckband

That's what I'll probably do FC - I can't really crochet yet so not an option
