Well I will never learn because I have already joined a sock club for 2009, and am in negotiation to join a second - I know, I know BUT I am quite possibly a lost cause.
I have just joined this group too though 'cos I think it's a great idea- and am going to do it. God only knows who will wear all those blooming socks mind you, but hey ho!

Good for you Joy!!
I'm incorrigible!! I'm in Wollmeise/Sundara Seasons and SkeinQueen Plushness sock clubs................and I have a few skeins of sock yarn besides!!!! So long as I keep knitting I should be okay.....

I'm a member of the stash knit down group, I'm not doing the sock club but am doing a sweater a month instead as most of my remaining stash in meant for jumpers.
Its a good idea though, putting 12 sock yarns and a pattern together then picking one at random each month

I've joined the lotr one too joy, but this will be an extra bit of excitement each month

It's this one Ali. I joined and paid ages ago when the exchange rate was virtually $2 to the £.
When I first looked at it, I followed the yarn link and was sold. They "spoke" to me!
There's a blog too. The designer is Lobug from Knitting Haven, Ali.
I have a cunning plan. I am not, not, not buying yarn next year ( unless I need it for a specific purpose and I haven't got it ). I am destashing after Christmas - a January sale if you like, and being much more circumspect with my purchases.
|
pictish
|
Ahhh yes I looked at that too That's the one terri is in.
I am doing the stashalong of sorts - started already - and it doesn't mean NO YARN just trying for the most part to knit from stash for big projects and getting the odd little thing - sock yarn, the odd hank for mitts or a scarf or lace or something every now and again.
A January sale sounds interesting

I already kind of do that, i pair up patterns and yarn but then when it comes to knitting them i usually go stash diving instead
I might try and stick to it next year though cos i have some lovely yarns i really want to use and hundreds of patterns saved and i do have a bit of a sock yarn stash to get through

It's a great idea, but I'm kinda working along the same lines as Franney. I'm not going to join the group but I might try to do it anyway. But I know what I'm like - it's likely that once I pick a bag and open it I'll decide I don't want to work with that yarn at that time, or the pattern isn't right for the yarn anymore and I'll abandon it completely and either rip open the rest of the bags searching for the yarn/pattern I fancy or dive into the stash
I'm a bit of lost cause for organised sock knitting
|

I pair my stash up with patterns on a spreadsheet, sometimes I have more than one pattern in mind for some yarns, but it jogs the memory when I come to knitting up the stash. Sometimes the original pattern has lost its appeal or something else is more appealing.

Well, i joined as i am serious about knitting from sockyarn stash only next year and it might give me the incentive i need to stick to it!
I'm going to try and make my own spreadsheet (never done it before, not my field of expertise!!) to keep track of yarns, patterns, yardage used etc and today i have spent a couple of hours updating my stash and now i am going to print out at least 12 patterns and put them in one of the sockyarnstash drawers so that i can choose one when i go to choose the next yarn
I'm currently planning January's PSotM club parcel, i'll give myself two yarns and two patterns to choose from and see how i do with it... it might not work and i'll end up stash diving regardless but i'll never know if i don't try will i!

In spite of my best intentions and knitting LOADS of sock yarn this year I still have more now than I started this year with
I am determined this will not happen this coming year.

For somebody who couldn't knit socks until August this year I seem to have an awful lot of sock yarn Most of it I had already in my pre-sock days I'm not joining this for the simple reason I have a lot on at the beginning of the year and don't think I could stick to it. I may keep it in mind though for a personal stash-busting later in the year.

Franney, if you have any stash in Rav then it will generate a spreadsheet for you, just click on the 3rd button to the right of 'add new yarn' at the top of the page. You can then just add stuff as you buy it / come across it in stash. This is how I made my spreadsheet.

I virtuously used 2 lots of sock yarn from my stash for Chrimbo pressies, then got sidetracked looking for red yarn, then ended up accidentally dropping 3 skeins of Violet Green sock yarn into my trolley.......so I have actually got more than I started with : )

Yep, i found that and have used it for the base of my own one
I've added a "possible patterns" column and taken out most of the others, just left yarn, colour, yardage and weight. Then i got sidetracked and haven't put any patterns in yet

The good thing about having your owm spreadsheet is you can print it off when you are due to go to the LYS. You can then look at it and think ' no I dont need more sock yarn, I have 12 balls, but my aran stash is low'
I also added a bit at the bottom of mine with yarn quantities needed for the things in my Rav queue.

Oh, 12 balls! If only!!
I daren't print my stash off, knowing me i'd leave it lying around and i am currently in denial that Bloke knows just how much i actually have
|

I did have less than 12 balls of sock yarn (until pictish destashed) but have 12 pairs of socks for myself and have yet to convert the rest of the family to the joy of handknitted socks so do not need more sock yarn.
You could just print it off when you are planning a big shop, my spreadsheet did help me keep focused during woolfest

Well, I've parcelled up 15 lots of sock yarn with pattern suggestions. They're all in a tote, and I'm going to get DH to pick Januarys for me tonight. It's quite exciting

DH very kindly obliged by picking my first parcel out of the tote for me last night, and I got some posh lucia in an ocean bluey colour, semi solid. So I balled the yarn up at midnight, and have done one pattern repeat of Knotty or Knice!!!!
I can't decide whether I should get a new parcel every month, or once I finish the socks Cos if I don't finish within the month, then I don't have the parcel to look forward to, but if I finish sooner, then I have to wait I suppose I could work on sock Wips in between waiting for the new parcels I have 5 or 6 one sock pairs
|
Aknita
|
That's a lovely pattern terri
|
pictish
|
Lovely pattern!!
You could get the 'club parcel' every month and if you finish early you get a 'bonus' parcel
|
terri
|
I could ALi!!!
I parcelled up 15 lots so that I had spare
|
pictish
|
Sounds ideal - you have an incentive to finishing then
|
Aknita
|
I might do this you know - sort out parcels I mean, or at least have a proper inventory of my yarn and sort out properly what I've got. I have yarn squirrelled away everywhere so I'm not enirely sure what is what and where
|
terri
|
I really enjoyed sorting through yesterday and picking yarns then matching them with a pattern!
When I've been in sock clubs before, I don't always like the pattern, and so I tend to just not look at the yarn again iyswim...........
i think with this, because I've actually sat and thought about which pattern to put with which yarn, I'm more likely to complete more socks
Having said that, I am looking forward to the lotr sock club, but I think I'll be open to using a differant pattern if I don't like the club one
|
janice
|
I have enough yarn for 30 pairs of socks, but no bags to sort it out for a lucky dip So I will just shove my hand in a box and grab a ball I promise not to peek
|
terri
|
I wrapped mine in tissue paper Janice
you could seal a box and just have an opening big enough for your hand to fit in?? and maybe elastic band a bit of paper to each skein with a pattern idea
|
janice
|
Great idea Terri, I have some Christmas wrapping paper left so I could use that Will do that when I come off the computer, DH is playing with his PS3 so no telly for me just now

When I told DH what I was planning on doing he asked why didn't I use carrier bags to wrap my sock yarn in So I did, and I put a label on each parcel with a sock pattern on it.
So my first Pot Luck aka January socks is ............a ball of Opal Acapulco in shade 1306 which is pink/green/blue which I will be knitting up as Meida socks from Favourite socks
|
terri

So DH's do have their uses at times when it comes to knitterly things
Looking forward to seeing Meida's socks knitted up Janice, I want to try them at some point, though they aren't on this years list

D'ya know, having seen Terri's socks and read about how organised she's been with this I'm totally impressed and having a bit of a rethink about it
I've got a couple of problems (well, lots of problems overall but I'll limit this to my sock yarn ) Firstly I have a lot of sock yarn that I've accumulated and I quite often find that I can't choose one and end up ordering something new because it's easier. And secondly I like the squishy packages arriving and being all excited and unwrapping them.
So, seeing as I'm trying to stashalong and have SO much sock yarn already I'm going to take a leaf out of Terri's book. Well, sort of. I'm going to choose 12 sock yarns and wrap them up individually (in the same paper so I don't know which is which) and each time I get the urge to cast on socks, or to order more sock yarn, I'll pick one and then that'll be the yarn I have to use. And I'll choose a pattern once I know what my yarn is. That way I get to unwrap yarn that I'd forgotten about so I'll be all excited about it, and secondly I won't be buying more yarn I don't need. Yay, problems solved.
Sorry, long post. I was working it all out in my head as I was typing it. But yeah, sorted. (If I can stick to it .... ) Thanks so much for the inspiration Terri!

That sounds like a brilliant plan FC, good luck with it!
I want to do something similar but i'm not going to start organising it until i have finished a couple of WIPs which includes two single socks for their partners - once they are both done i will think about casting on a new pair of socks
Mind you, i have rethought my PSotM Club several times already so this is probably going to change
|
FatCat
|
Thanks! I've got a couple of socks OTN at the moment that need finishing up too, but if I wrap up my yarn NOW then by the time I've finished the socks I'll have forgotten what yarn is wrapped (yes really ).
Good luck with yours too - both the sock finishing and the PSotM Club too. (And yeah, I'm sure my plan will change during the course of the year )

I packaged 15 lots up I think Wrapped in Pink paper and all kept in a tote. I do have some sock wips, but thought I could work on wips after the months socks are done, so until the first feb, I'll do a bit of socks already started iyswim
I'm excited for next months already, DH is going to pick it for me again, and it is like getting a new parcel. I think like you fatcat, its because I have so much sock yarn
It does feel more organised though, and I put pattern suggestions in with my parcels so that I have something that matches the yarn already in mind
I sorted my ravelry queue too, into possible projects for 2009, so the stuff I really want to make first is in there. Less time wasted wondering what to cast on next aswell

well, mine are all chosen although I found it hard to keep to 12 But once I get down to 6 left I can always choose and wrap more and mix them into the bag and keep it topped up And I found stuff in my stash I'd completely and utterly forgotten about So a great exercise in stash reorganisation too Just need to wrap it now, and I've got a nice bag to put it in too.
I did wonder about putting pattern ideas in, but I think that if I'm limiting myself to having to use one yarn then I'd rather unwrap the yarn and then browse patterns purely with that yarn in mind IYSWIM. Gosh, I'm really excited about this - not sure whether that's a good thing or whether I should perhaps think about getting out of the house a bit more often ......

I think I'm going to finally join in on this one but like FC leave the pattern until I have the yarn chosen.
I've got a few balls/skeins of yarn that I've already balled up for use (I'm a 2 at a time gal) & must use those first. So tomorrow will see me wrapping them up & then I'll get a surprise.
Now where is all the lovely Socktopus paper that I've been saving......

Blueadt, did you go for it in the end? Very impressed that you have quality Socktopus paper lying around, mine are all wrapped in bargain Woolies giftwrap ... although maybe I should be keeping that as an antique of the future
Well, I cleared my sock backlog over the weekend (pics in Look What I Made) and having got to the point of NO socks OTN I unwrapped my first PSC parcel last night It's Tofutsies shade 725 Foot in the Door(bright greens/blues/yellows), very cheery yarn, and I've cast on the Primavera socks

I got DH to pick out Februarys parcel for me, its one of the socktopus club yarns from last year, and I'll be making the hopscotch socks with the yarn, which is the pattern the yarn was designed by anna bell for. Trouble is, they're toe up I think I'll just go ahead and make them topdown though
I'm not going to cast on till sunday though, I'm working on a few bits otn, and maybe I'll seam a wip or two

Oh yes DH will be picking a yarn for me on Sunday. Before then I've got a couple of little things to finish & am really looking forward to my 'club yarn'. I chose the 9 that I did as I'd excitedly wound them up from the skein & then put them back into my stash. At least if I get those knitted up first then the others can see the light of day.
I had the Socktopus paper as I indulged in a 'little' something before 2008 ended & took advantage of the 40% discount
Re Woolies, DH & I were in town today & it's so sad that the shop has gone. We also discovered the DH's favourite cafe closed down last summer & loads of other shops are closed or closing. Shops that you thought would be around for years are fast disappearing
