Just one more thing - and particularly aimed at Chrissy's posting, if anyone on here wants to start one or more of these patterns as a Crochetalong, ( perhaps it should be called a DROPSalong ) Birgitte will join with you on the same pattern ( for those that don't know, Birgitte is the translator of DROPS patterns from the Norwegian original ) and help if required through those tricky bits ................!!

They do an amazing good job of assimilating don't they? You go along perfectly normally and then WHAM!! you're assimilated as if nothing happened, and the only tell-tale sign is that you start coveting yarn, needles, patterns, hooks, books, WIPs..... it's shocking, it really is.
And apparently there's no cure.
Binty
So should I just give into it now then or offer a token resistance?

It's up to you really. I don't think it makes any odds to them to be perfectly truthful - you're assimilated anyway, and they are dismissive of any cries for mercy.

Well here is my weekends efforts - the problem now is that it takes ages to go round once and it doesnt look very "square" any more! Its using up loads of odds that I wouldn't know what to do with so thats really good.
I can really see the benefit of doing little squares and then sewing them together.
chrissy
Ali,
that is looking really lovely, I found it really hard to keep holding it when it got bigger, and I do prefer doing the little squares, and you can crochet them together rather than sewing, makes it even easier
Chrissy
cazzie

Looks really good - you've been busy
Could always crochet smaller squares to go round the edge? - not sure?
Binty
| cazzie wrote: | | Could always crochet smaller squares to go round the edge? - not sure? |
I was wondering about that, maybe making different sizes of squares and adding them together. Hmmmm something to think about
Jobo
Its looking really good Binty I have made several blankets like this and look on them as a project you can just pick up and do a round or so when you have some minutes to spare. I didn't have them as on the go projects iyswim, but just something to keep handy for when you have a bit of time to fill.
Crochet projects like this relax you right down immediately because you haven't got to think too much about it and you don't need to know "where you are" - no counting or anything, just carry on going till you run out of yarn, or you can stop when your blankie looks big enough
Great way of using up odds and sods - you're right
pictish
It looks lovely And the colours you've chosen go together beautifully
franney
Count me in for the Drops-along, what gorgeous designs!
Binty, the blanket looks lovely, i made one last year that is about five feet square, it took me an evening just to do one round! I really resented it, but i am so glad i carried on with it because it is now a beautiful blanket

Binty
| pictish wrote: | It looks lovely And the colours you've chosen go together beautifully |
I havent so much "chosen" the colours it's what Ive got in my box
Does anyone know if you can do a granny oblong?
loobyj
In theory I always think it's possible - but when I went to try it the strain of working out scrambled me, so I went back to squares.
I think you need to do a base chain and work into both sides and ends of it to set the oblong shape and then you'd carry on as normal. In my head that's how it works.
I might have to have another fiddle now.
lj
Jobo
I reckon you could do a granny oblong Do a base chain as Looby said, then do a few rows of double crochet, working back and forth, then start to go round the outside using the shell pattern, remember to do 2 shells in each corner, otherwise you won't have a flat piece, but a handbag - hey could be an idea
loobyj
Yes - double crochet, that would be easier
Hmm, can see I'll be trying this when I get home!
lj
melody yarns
You could do two big squares and then join them together, that would make a rectangle
franney
I'll try and explain it, bear with me!
If you were to do a square you would have an equal number of trebles (or whatever) per side, so to do a rectangle you would do an extra one (or however many to get the size you want) on two of the sides.
So, if a square has a start of ch3, 2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3 tr, ch2, join as the centre block, a rectangle would have ch3, 2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3tr, join as it's centre block
the next round would then be ch3, 2tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, (3tr, ch2, 3tr), ch2, 3tr, ch2, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, 3tr, ch2, join
(bearing in mind you either join a new colour in a ch2 space or slip stitch across to the next ch2 space)
I haven't tried this, but it should work, not sure if i've got the placement of the corners right though?
Binty
Thanks for that you lot - hook at the ready!!!!
Im off to have a try - Ill let you know how I get on

Hello everybody, I'm Birgitte, the other half of SKD, and hoping to be doing this Dropsalong with you. I am about to vote for 99/2 cos thats what I have just started / but i want to do 99.1 and, as bruce has already said one of the throws / but that wont be until the summer.
It seems clear to me that everyone already knows what they are doing, and Binty, your pictures are really great !! But if anyone does have an issue with understanding the translations, or the Norwegian style / then Ill be happy to try to help. Sometimes I have to admit, they can be troublesome especially if you are not used to the way Drops puts its crochet patterns together.
Bruce has told me that all the 99 brochures have gone out today so you all should have them tomorrow /and also for any newcomers / the Magic 10 has not yet been reached / so just let us know the address and one will be in the post to you.
This will be my first "anythingalong" / / gotto admit to being slightly apprehensive !!
