murdo

Ok, not got the yarn yet BUT planning on buying silk/wool DK to do Tangled Yoke cardi. Also thinking of doing a matching beret!!! No idea what colour but edging towards John Blue.
So this

cazzie

They're lovely patterns.

I'm still dithering big time  Rolling Eyes

Like the sound of the silk mix but am drawn to a paler blue which isnt done in the silk one.

Will look at my patterns again tonight (if I dont fall asleep  Laughing )
jessica

love that pattern, still dithering as i have a real problem with itchy yarns i even have to wear a t under my Jaeger Merino
melody yarns

Well I bit the bullet yesterday and bought the Donegal Silk-mix in Cobalt blue but I was tempted by Aviemore as well  Laughing so I just plumped for one of them in the end plus a shade card for any future purchases  Laughing .

I want to knit myself a buttoned hoodie and have the one from the Jaeger Trinity book in mind as it's a bit more fitted. I'll try to find a piccie.
pictish

Ooh would like to see a pic of that pattern Debs - I have a Trinity book but can't think of the one you mean.
murdo

There's more shades in cards than on website Cazzie, off to kip now but will look tomorrow for you
cazzie

Ooo thank you Very Happy
pictish

BUT!!! Some of the colours on the shade cards are now in a different type on the site - eg some of the Heathers I think it is have become Silk Donegal colours instead Confused
melody yarns

It's this one Ali, I think it's called Santana in the book:

It's one of those patterns that I've been 'collecting' yarn for and always think 'Oooh I could knit that hoodie in {insert yarn name here} yarn'  Shocked
pictish

Actually I MUST have that book cos it looks very familiar Laughing It's lovely  Razz Don't think I'd do it in Trinity tho. But lovely in the tweed or a merino.
mogiebear

Sad Went to New Lanark yesterday - through the snow! Unfortunately only had a few minutes in the shop. being harassed by others. The chunky is in the shop, and also the  1p/g aran hanks. Only had time to grab a couple of packs of dk - managed to knit the sirdar cabled hoodie out of 10 balls so should be enough. Got forest green in silk mix and sandstone ecru in wool dk.  Wish I'd had enough time to sort out some aran hanks as there was a burgundy colour that I liked .
murdo

Mogie, what does the silk mix feel like?
mogiebear

murdo wrote:

It's quite rough on the ball, but really softens up when it's blocked/when you knit with it.

sounds good though!
pictish

Wish I could have gone - might have bumped into you too!! But Mr P wasn't well and it was snowing heavily here Twisted Evil Hoping to go in 2 weeks time and have a good look then Razz

How awful for you not to get some peace and quiet to look at those bargains!!!
mogiebear

We just simply hadn't allowed enough time  - we didn't go in the shop or the millworkers house either which are my favourite bits.
murdo

Cazzie
they are ringing me back. Can't see a paler blue in the silk mix but going to ask them. Debs is right , they are doing some of the colours listed  in the Heathers in silk mix...so going to ask about sky haze and iris
melody yarns

Oh buggritt cos I like some of the other colours but went for cobalt blue in the end  Sad

Never mind eh?  Sad
murdo

Ah but reason they are phoning back Debs is they are not sure re blues!
melody yarns

how do you mean Murdo?
murdo

Cazzie was wondering if they did other colours in wool silk...as we had been discussing some colours in heather also being available in the silk mix. I phoned shop to ask and they weren';t sure if the light blues were available in silk mix and are phoning back Smile
murdo

OK, update. There ARE some colours that were originally Heathers now being done in Donegal Silk Tweed. Lady is phoning me in morning to confirm which.
mogiebear

So , are these colours that aren't shown on the shade cards? Suppose they'll add them to the website when they add the chunky.
murdo

Well, my shadecards are a few months old and they arent on them BUT lady on phone had a different (newer?) shade card with eg lovage as a silk tweed option. On my cards that is only an option in Heathered ones
mogiebear

I think I saw a lovage silk one yesterday - there did seem to be more silk colours  than before, but the shelves aren't really marked nor are the packs (or not very clearly if they are).
murdo

k, lovage and apricot are heathered ones that are now also available in silk tweed. The light blue heathered is NOT currently available in silk tweed  Smile Just had a call.
pictish

Lovage looks nice on the card doesn't it - still fancying Cobalt but also Blue John and Woodland Haze - sounds a bit like the betting on the Grand National Laughing
murdo

lol...made myself get different from usual.
cazzie

Thank you Murdo Very Happy

I'm still dithering   and feeling guilty cos I brought some stuff from Terri yesterday Rolling Eyes
murdo

You got a shade card Cazzie?
cazzie

No I havent - ought to send for one really
melody yarns

Betting on the Grand National  ROFL
franney

On my shade card Lovage is a Silk Tweed shade but not a Heather Mix shade Confused
(It doesn't matter to me anyway, Lovage and Apricot are SO not me Wink )
pictish

Has the postie brought any yet?? Razz  Laughing What am I like? Rolling Eyes
melody yarns

nope  Sad
pictish

Sad poo
murdo

visions of Pictish and MYarns posties running from tree to tree/under cover to the music from Mission Impossible Smile
pictish

Laughing  Laughing
murdo

Yarn has arrived!!!!! Yeeeehah!! I like it. Not alpaca-soft but certainly not rough/scratchy. I could wear this against my skin. Tweedy one will be a super sub for felted tweed if gauge ok Smile
pictish

YAYY!! Glad somebody has got it and that it's nice!!!
murdo

I REALLY like it. Colours nice and good feel. I think people are going to be using a lot of the silk mix for Felted Tweed patterns.
cazzie

Oooo I was trying to talk myself out of pulling out of  this KAL (brought some Noro Silver Thaw off Terri and then topped up with a bit more from somewhere else  Embarassed ) but now I've read this  Wink
melody yarns

The postie brought my New Lanark parcel about half an hour ago and it's SUPERB!! Fantastic colour (I bought cobalt) and lovely feel too. Although the colour and the feel make me think of knitting something entirely different - trust me eh?

I agree with Murdo - I could be ordering a darned lot more of this yarn on the coming months/years.

{And I'm convinced now that I've seen the shade card that I've got three x one kilo cones of this yarn (the aran variety) upstairs in the YHA that I bought off eBay last year or the year before. In clematis, denim and heather. Convinced! Result eh?  Laughing }
pictish

Brilliant!!! That'll keep you going a while then Cool Cobalt is the colour I'm most inclined towards atm.
melody yarns

Cobalt is gorgeous Ali, really lovely.
pictish

What do you fancy knitting with it then? Wink
melody yarns

Well now that I've seen it in person as it were, it's made me think of the ribbed collared cardigan in the Debbie Bliss Simple living book. I think it would look lovely in that!
pictish

Oh yes I know the one - it's a lovely pattern that - it had dropped off my to-do list Wink

Just a thought tho - is it really the right time of year to start knitting in tweedy wool? Surprised *runs and hides*
melody yarns

I was only thinking that myself earlier today as I was puting a pair of boots into their box in the wardrobe  Shocked

Shame New Lanark don't make cotton  Shocked
Auntie Noo

Nothing wrong with being prepared for the Autumn!!!
pictish

Did you get your samples then Noo??
Auntie Noo

Yep - yesterday... I went to Mum's so forgot to tell you all Embarassed

Whose idea WAS this?? Laughing Laughing
melody yarns

Errrr, dunno???  dunno *looks innocent*
pictish

Well I'm at this minute knitting a tweedy jumper so there you go Laughing
pictish

Think I might be just about to cave in Laughing
murdo

Really????
melody yarns

Oh Ali, the yarn is definitely worth caving in for - it's fabulous yarn and a fabulous buy. I'd sell some of my stash to have more of this  Cool
pictish

I'm supposed to be waiting till we go but I can't wait any longer Laughing  Laughing Probably going for the Blue John - I think ..... but I might be exploring the postal charges a bit first Wink
murdo

Blue John is GORGEOUS, Ali
mogiebear

Very Happy Certainly is!
pictish

Well I have in the end gone for 2 colours - 8 balls of Pebble (which is a mid grey colour) in the Natural Undyed range to make a waistcoat like the man's one in the Sirdar book plus 2 balls of the Blue John tho I'm sure I will end up getting another pack of that immediately!!! Laughing

The undyed stuff is a very good sub for the Sirdar Eco I think - I hadn't realised it was organic till tonight. It's a third of the price of the Sirdar Eco in my LYS.
melody yarns

See, I'm tempted to get some grey for the collared cardigan in the Eco book as well and the Aviemore is superb, as is the russet and cherry red.

Now....What can I sell to get some dosh?? *looks round at dog, husband and children*
pictish

Well that would be a start Wink

Aviemore looks lush Razz You know I don't think I've ever taken sooo long to choose a colour before - I think I just wanted ALL of them!!! Well maybe not Apricot and Tartan Green Wink
pictish

Well I've just rung and changed my order to a pack of the Blue John instead of 2 balls - hopefully it will be posted to me today. Very helpful lady in the shop Razz

Anybody cast on yet?? Wink
murdo

Right. Swatching Blue John for Tangled Yoke. Bear with me here as I am totlly cabbage-noggined re maths/proportions.
Pattern says need gauge in ss of
24 stitches and 36 rows = 4 inches in stockinette and garter rib
with 3.75mm needles
Well. On 3 mm needles I'm getting stitch count of 21 stitches
I see another lady on Rav used 2.5mm needles, which I suspect I would have to do
http://www.ravelry.com/projects/SpinningJenny/tangled-yoke-cardigan
Isn't it lovely, I've pmed her re our KAL.
...a lot of the USA lot using Felted Tweed are using either 3mm or 2.75mm
Now...what's making me think is what if when it washes it gets bigger...had a disaster with felted tweed last year as gained 0.5 inches every 4 inches after gentle wash (funnily only in one colour!!!...other gloves fine)
I am going to wash a 2.5 mm swatch BUt I am not sure how to work out what size I need after I do this IYKWIM if I get a lot of growth...choose one measurement like x amount of stitches for finished chest y and work from there???. I am a 35/36 inch chest and usually wear cardis of finished measurements of 36-39 dependent on ease/fit. I think this one looks better fitted.
This iS a bit of a ramble  Shocked  Razz

OK who else is swatching...it's all gone quiet!!!
melody yarns

Murdo, you need to knit a tension swatch using the needles that give the best tension for the yarn, the best 'feel' of the fabric is what you're after. Then wash the swatch using the method you'll use to wash the finished garment, and spin it in the washing machine. Lay it flat to dry and then count the stitches and rows gauge tomorrow when the yarn has had time to rest and it is completely dry.

To be perfectly honest, if you're getting 21sts and you need 24sts then New Lanark might not be your best yarn for the tangled yoke cardigan  Confused cos I'd suggest it was a bit too far out. Using smaller needles might make the finished fabric like cardboard  Confused iyswim?
murdo

It's strange Debs, still feels soft/ok on 2.5mm ( I dried it with a hairdrier Razz

Not impatient at all then Murdo??  Laughing  Laughing

If it feels fine then go for it!! But is IS best to dry it flat, you know....  Rolling Eyes  Laughing  Laughing
pictish

Murdo the Felted Tweed is almost a 4ply - even on 3.75mm it's a fairly open fabric. It has the same meterage as Rowan 4 Ply Soft. So will be a very different weight to the NLanark. But as Debs says if it feels ok on 2.5mm go with it. I'm not sure I could knit a whole jumper myself on 2.5mm mind Shocked  Laughing

The other thing to do is do the smaller size on a bigger guage to give you approximately the 38" but bit of a gamble it will come out right.

I started the Tangled Yoke yesterday and gave up after the first row - 226 sts, 6 markers, faux seam stitches (why a faux seam??? I thought the point of knitting in the round was to avoid seams Rolling Eyes ), cats casing the markers - it was making me tetchy and stressed  Evil or Very Mad so am now doing The Untangled Non-Yoke Cardi Laughing ie a plain little round neck cardi with deep garter rib and no horizontal celtic cables Wink
murdo

What tension are you getting with the silk mix folks? I may do Salina from Vintage Style instead as I am getting 22 stitches on 3 mm...altough the tension for that is supposed to be 23 stsitches...rude words
pictish

That's a nice jumper - what about doing the smaller size on 3mm then? If you're 1 st out on guage it should mean it's roughly 2" bigger.
pictish

Woweee!!! Mine just arrived and is GORGEOUS!!!! I think the Blue John Silk Tweed is my favourite just but the grey Natural is lovely too. Def worth the money and more tho don't expect it to be cashmerino Laughing But it isn't scratchy and the Natural Mix is like a softer version of Rowan Scottish Tweed.

Highly recommended if you like pure wool tweed yarn. And organic to boot Razz
melody yarns

I think it's probably one of the most bargainacious pure wool yarns aropund at the moment  Very Happy

I got 22 on 3.75mm for the Sirdar hoodie.
mogiebear

I'm knitting the Must Have Cardigan in light graphite pure wool. So far done the back and most of one front.
murdo

Thanks to you lots very kind explanations re gauge Smile I now think that on 3.75mm needles and a gauge of 21 stitches I can getaway with smallest Tangled Yoke to get a 38 finished chest!
pictish

YAYY!!! That's good news murdo!!

Can't wait to see your Must Have cardi mogie Cool

Yay!!! Well done Murdy!
murdo

OK finished the nearly 6 inches of garter rib in the Tangled Yoke. Used one ball so far. Onto ss....thank goodness. May pick down the faux seam as not sure I like it. Will add piccie after coffee has reached all parts
pictish

Oooh  Razz I am doing my Untangled Nonyoke but not in NL - I thought the faux seam a bit of a palaver so unpicked the whole thing and mine is just flat Confused Is yours in the Blue John Murdo?
murdo

Yes, using the Blue John...here's a piccie!
http://piratepurls.blogspot.com/
pictish

It's looking lovely!!
jessica

Oh wait for me i am joining in.  NL Aran with Silk colour Swinford, pattern Lynton from RY Classic Coast.   So far done the back and half of one front.   I worried that this would be too heavy looking, but in fact it is lovely and will be warm for these cool days (well 4" of snow here today).  I am really liking this yarn hope it washes up a bit softer though.
melody yarns

Ooh that looks a lovely pattern Jessica! I bet it will be fab in the aran silk!
Anna

I was going to join in with this, but decided that I had too many WIPs to warrant it. Perhaps when I've finished one of them?

I did order the shade cards though, they came the next day  Very Happy  and Mum and I spent the evening stroking them and saying "oooh!" a lot  Laughing  Laughing  They're now next to my computer and if the internet annoys me by taking ages to load a page I stroke a shade card to calm me down  Rolling Eyes  Laughing
franney

OMG! Anna that is exacty what i do! Laughing
mogiebear

Finished my cardigan!

eta - details in "Look what I made".
murdo

mogie that's beautiful!!!!!!
pictish

Oooh more pics!!! It is beautifully made mogie Cool
Jo028

MB, that's gorgous it really looks like a great fit on you. Your needles must be smoking, you've only just got the book  Shocked  Shocked
melody yarns

I have been contemplating more New Lanark yarn today - in aran weight to knit a jacket. I haven't even cast on the DK stuff yet  Laughing

I rather fancy the dark graphite silk-wool mixture in the aran weight and the oatmeal mixture in the DK weight for the Must Have cardigan. I might just have to buy some this week  Wink
pictish

Oooh you doing a Must Have as well Debs? Razz I swatched with the NL but used the Jaeger in the end.
melody yarns

Did you not get tension with NL Ali?
pictish

I did actually - I got 20st on 4.5mm I think but I'd seen a camel one in the same shade of Jaeger MM on Rav that I liked PLUS I wanted it slightly bigger so went with the Jaeger at 19st in the 36" - I don't want it really fitted just comfy.
melody yarns

Ah good- I'll try 4.5mm when I get round to it then  Cool
franney

I have two contributions (so far) to the KAL Smile
First is a Raisin Beret following the pattern but with an extra repeat to make it longer

Made in Damson Silk Tweed dk for a friend

and second is a Raisin Beret made more beret like with increases and decreases and evryfink! Very Happy

made in natural dk, i think it's Sandstone but i can't remember what colours i ordered Embarassed and this one is allll mine Very Happy
pictish

Oh gorgeous!!!!! I wish I could wear hats - they both look great Cool
franney

Thankyou Very Happy

Why can't you wear hats? Confused
