My Friend Taught me how to crochet squares

I have a real life knitting friend, Wendy, who I went to visit on wednesday morning and have a coffee with and as usual I took my knitting. I took my socks along, but got nothing done. She showed me how to crochet a square blanket! I was raring to come home and habve a bash but I had to go and help with cookery club and was out all yesterday, so last night was the first chance I got to try it out.

I'm so pleased that she showed me how to do this - I can just about crochet, but this is just so easyand it's renewed my interest in crocheting quite a bit.

I'm off to look at the Crochet Poet's free crochet patterns in a min, to see if there's owt I fancy making for myself with a hook Wink

Cor, how exciting! I think you might be hooked (pun completed intended Very Happy ) I love crocheting, almost as much as I like knitting. Haven't done any for far too long, I blame the knitting enablers on here Wink

Don't forget CROCHET PATTERN CENTRAL for free patterns.

Looking forwards to seeing pics of what you make Very Happy

It's fun to learn a new technique isn't it?

Don't forget it's Crochet Week starting March 18th!

Well I started a baby blanket today that is supposed to be for beginners.... ha!!

I couldn't even understand the instructions for what to bloomin' do!!

I unravelled it and will start a new baby blanket for the SCBU knitalong in my own pattern. Wink

I think learning to crochet is great...even if you don't 'do it' for a full project, it's great for finishing off knitteds too. Very Happy

And I think it's quicker for blankets too once you get going!

It was this one:

Lisa's Easy Baby Blanket

If anyone can translate the instructions I'd be very happy Wink I got stuck as soon as the instructions said "make 1 ch and turn"

Turn where?

Let's try and unravel this!

When you work crochet in rows you have to 'step up' at the end of each row so that you are at the right height for the next row. In this case it's ch1 (work one chain) because the next row is SC (or DC in UK terms) If the next row was in a taller stitch you would work more chains at the end of the row. That way the edges of your work stay nice and straight.

Turn is exactly that - turn the work round so that you're ready to start the next row. Because I'm left-handed for me that would be with the work all to the right of the hook - if you're right-handed the work would all be to the left of the hook.

Hope that helps!

A-Ha!!!

I thought that SC meant single crochet!! That's what it said in my books.... no wonder it wasn't turning out right Laughing THat's the first problem sorted out.

The other problem is that the chain that the pattern asks you start out with creates a double crochet foundation chain that gets longer not wider as you work, so the first 'row' is knitted along with the foundation row iyswim? It's difficult to explain I know Confused Anyhoo, I didn't know where to make the next stitch of the turned row, the bottom bit or the top bit, as both looked like they could be right. Ish.

Daft question, but is the US DC our treble??? That would make a heck of a lot more sense if it was cos my work looked nothing like the pattern was supposed to....

Hmmm, I might go back to this crochet lark then.... Shocked

English and American terminology are different, so it's always best to check which the pattern is written in!!!!

Yes, American DC is our treble, their treble is our double treble!

In terms of where to make the next row - I've not come across that method of foundation row (but have bookmarked the page to try!) - I'd just go in so that which ever bit looks neatest is left as the unworked bit! Not very scientific I know!!

Look forward to hearing how you get on!

Now that would make a lot more sense! I can do doubles and I can do trebles, and knew that what I had didn't look anything like the photo. My attempt looked all squished up and funny. Now I know why Rolling Eyes

My top lip was beginning to get chapped as I'd been sitting holding the hook and yarn with my tongue sticking out, concentrating very hard, for three days Laughing

I even looked for an American/English translation in my books but couldn't find anything as I suspected that somewhere along the line things were lost in translation. But I didn't find a translation in any of them. Never mind hey, it looks like my questions have been answered!
Thanks so much Loobj!!

In fact if you pop over to my blog, you'll see a piccie of the square bit of crochet that I did before I frogged it and started the daft blanket Rolling Eyes

I was proud of that bit of cochet I was. Laughing

I've just popped and had a look!! Looks good - I've nearly always got a granny square blanket on the go - it's a really good way of using up odds and ends - it's a pink one at the moment.

Also liked the baby jacket that you've started too - looks a snuggly pattern.
