|
Jobo
|
Oh yes - Harlan Coben - have got him on my Amazon wish list - I think Tell No One was supposed to be very good

Oh yup, fan of all of the above, especially Reg Hill. The Dalziel & Pascoe books are streets ahead of the tv versions.
I also really like Stephen Booth's 'Cooper & Fry' books - another northern cop duo. My current fave detective is Lindsey Davis' 'Falco' series. It's set in Ancient Rome but very modern and with a great touch of humour as well as serious cases.
Val McDermid also writes superb literary crime fiction but it's right on the limit of what I can stomach in terms of disturbing gruesomeness Well worth a look for the non-squeamish though.

I like exactly the same as murdo. I'm listening to the dalziel and pascoe ones on my ipod now, well one anyway and it's read by the bloke who plays pascoe on tv. yummy.

I am a big Harlan Coben fan - it keeps looking like they are going to make a movie of one or more of his books but then nothing happens
Also Patricia Cornwell and for a quick easy comfort read you can't beat a good old Agatha Christie.
I have started reading John Case too - The Genesis Code was one - they are a bit different. Turns out John Case is actually a pseudonym for a husband and wife writing team.
Bad girl! reading the ending first Debs

Harlan Coben
Rebus - Ian Rankin
Agatha Christie - honestly!
I don't read murder mysteries very often though - I read in bed, and like to sleep at night so nothing too gruesome. I read an Iain Banks once and it scared the living daylights out of me!

I like Agatha Christie too, Joy, nothing to be ashamed of I'm not a huge fan of "modern" murder-mystery books, although I've enjoyed some of Kathy Reichs'. I like ones set in the past - although there seem to be a lot of medieval ones, which get a bit same-ish. You can't beat Brother Cadfael!

Yes Anna I forgot about Cadfael

I was hooked on A Christie as a teenager. I still love Hercule Poirot on the trelly

An Agatha Christie fan too Also:
Margery Allingham (Campion)
Rankin
Peter Robinson (Inspector Banks)
Stephen Booth,
Dorothy L Sayers (Lord Peter Wimsey)
Elizabeth George (Inspector Lynley, much better than the TV series)
I'm not much good with too much blood and gore - just a nice old fashioned detective story.

Margery Allingham without a doubt! She is such a good writer and that means a lot to me - I can't bear sloppy writing, no matter how good the story.
The earlier stories are a bit formulaic but by the mid to late 1930s she really hit her stride. The Tiger in the Smoke is a masterpiece (also - film trivia here - it's where P.C. Dixon of Dock Green fame makes his first appearance).

Patricia Cornwall (both only her early stuff)
P J Tracy
Alex Kava
... and that's just for starters
and I have to keep them as well
tried Minette Walters and have kept back The Sculptress and The Ice House but gave away the rest.
