Machine washing New Lanark Yarn?I am a lazy so and so - just wondering if anyone has used the delicate "wool wash" on their machine for New Lanark yarns?
I don't mind washing it - but it will take so long to dry - the only place I can put it is in the bathroom, which is the coldest room
Thanks

lol Another kindred spirit wondering about the wool wash cycle! I've still to wash mine and have been hanging off really as am a bit worried about how the wool will respond. IHowever, my hands/wrists are bothering me just now and I couldn't wring it ... may be an 'experiment' happening here at the weekend
There's a thread going on in British Knitter forum on Ravelry talking about some problems with bleeding (seems to be with the cherry colour though and only a couple of people are saying they've had issues).
Would be really interested to hear how others have found washing NL yarn?

My machine is old (17 years), so I personally wouldn't risk it.
However I usually handwash even shop-bought pure wool garments, rinse them and then put then in an old pillow case (one garment per pillow-slip if I'm doing more than one item) for a short sharp spin in the machine. I also dry the things flat. Now the children have flown the nest I have a couple of beds available for this .

I wouldn't risk it either butl like Glynis my machine doesn't have a hand wash setting as it's about 8 years old. I DO always spin my handwash woollies tho and don't bother with a pillow case but I think that's a good precaution. I put them on an airer with the rest of the washing - I don't lie them flat as I've nowhere to do that.
I think the NL might felt quite easily just by the look of it.

My washing machine felts superwash wool so no good me giving an opninion I think if i had a machine with a handwash programme I would chance it, but not an ordinary wool wash... i think they are for machine washable wool really. It feels like it would felt quite easily!

I have washed my alpaca jumper in the machine, but I turn the temp right down to 20 just to be extra careful. It works really well and a good spin makes it much easier to dry in the winter.

I never spin my knits, but thats only because I have no idea what speed spin to use so that it doesn't stretch the garment out of shape
What spin spped does everyone else use???

I was once told you should use a fast speed rather than a slow one (which is not what I thought ) - I presume cos it's a short spin?? - so I do mine on my normal speed which is about 1200 I think.

I'll have to try that, thanks Ali

I always wash the larger garments in a laundry bag too - it saves any stretching if garments get tangled.
I need to examine my machine / instructions to see if it has a spin only.
I think the machine is about 8 years old and I don't know this

If a yarn is hand wash only I will always hand wash it, although we have a delicates wash on the machine, and then spin it to spin out the excess water. I alway use the fastest spin speed, which is 1600 rpm for our machine, and then either dry it flat on towels or on the airer. I've never had any problems this way - yet!
I do have some New Lanark DK and aran in stash but haven't yet washed anything made from it. I think I'd hand wash to be certain though, as it doesn't feel machine washable iyswim? Maybe drop New Lanark an email as they are very good with answering queries.

I made two hats for a friend in NL DK and she hand washed them really carefully and one of them has felted slightly
I've not washed my hat yet but when i do i'll probably chuck in the machine on a wool wash cos that's what i do with all my knits never had a problem so far though

I'm going to just throw it in tonight (inside a bag, on a handwash setting) and see what happens.
Well, it was only 5.00 for the yarn, and didn't take long to knit, so I can get more yarn at the SECC and make another one if it all goes wrong. It's not like it was 100 quid and took 6 months to make.
I also have a couple of very petite friends - it might shrink to fit them

I'm like Franney, I chuck my knitteds in the machine on the wool cycle, with a special liquid such as Woolite or Persil Silk and Wool. As yet (touches wood) I've never had a problem.

I think it has felted
I'm sure it has felted
I put it in a mesh laundry bag and washed it on a "hand-wash" setting.
Oh dear.
It looks a lot thicker than before, and it's drip-drying at the moment - I'll stretch it out on the floor when it's a bit drier, and see how it looks.
Anyone a size 8-10?

Well, I was really lazy, and just left it on it's own to have a good think about being either a nice cardi that goes out everywhere, or a cushion that will get squished by big bottoms
I put it on this morning, and it's absolutely fine. Better in fact
The wool is much softer, it has "bloomed" since washing, and no, I didn't do a swatch
I'm a really happy bunny - especially as I have another 2.5 kg of this or similar yarn

YAY! That's great news Linda, i'm so glad you now have a lovely cardi to wear and not a cushion to sit on
It's also nice to know that i can throw my NL in the machine if i need to
