Lacy Kerchief Scarf

I've been eyeing this up for a while now. Just wondered if anyone here had given it a go or whether it's unchartered forum waters Very Happy

I have that mag, and it's on my to-do list, it's really pretty Smile
loobyj

Think I shall be starting it when I go on hols at the end of next week. I've bought some Patons 4-ply cotton to do it in - plenty of yardage and only £3.05 a ball - so if it all goes horribly wrong I won't have spent a fortune!

Last week in my lunch hour.

BUT, I went to House of Fraser in town. I didn't go to you know where! Laughing

Not seen that pattern before, but it is lovely Smile
Glynis

Oh I like that!
How do I get hold of the pattern? I'll have to go looking when I've a bit more time.

It's in the Interweave Knits Holiday Gifts 2006 magazine, i belive they had it in stock at Get Knitted (possibly, it was SO long ago Shocked ) unfortunately mine was sent to me by an Amercian swap pal so i can't be more help other than to say check around the larger internet woolshops, maybe Confused
Glynis

Thanks Franney, I'll have a bit of a wander and see what I can find Smile

Ohhh i love that pattern. Just glad GS is keeping you in check.
Alice

It is very pretty and very tempting... I haven't seen any actual knitted pictures -have you done a blog search?

Why use lots of words, when one will do? Very Happy

You see n, that a trip to 'you know where' is GK, which Loobyj can practically sniff from her office window, but secret trips, well you can lose friends by making secret trips to there, don't you agree? Laughing

Somebody has to, I am sure she justs wants to show off to us all tomorrow Rolling Eyes Laughing
loobyj

You're mad GS - but you're right, I couldn't bear to tell you I'd made a secret trip to GK Laughing So I went to House of Fraser instead, where there is far less choice and so far less temptation. I wouldn't have gone to GK and only spent six quid.

Glynis - they had a stack of the Holiday Gifts mag from Interweave in GK - if it's not on the site drop them an email. It's also in the summer 2005 IK as well.

Yes, there are quite a few pictures of it in blogland - but not particularly encouraging commentary - so I didn't read much! I can put myself off easily enough, I don't need any help! Laughing

GS, Snail and Sprite - I'll bring the pattern and yarn along tomorrow evening and you can tell me if I'm biting off more than I can chew Very Happy

Simple - of course you have and I am not looking Wink
Glynis

Well I've made a start on one of these, though mine will be a bit smaller because I'm using thinner yarn.

It took me two hours and six tries to get the hang of the provisional cast on AND get the first row knitted correctly Embarassed

I'm using some Blue Faced Leicester sock wool and 3.25 needles.
I'm not sure whether I've made the right choice of yarn and needle, but I can't face another marathon to start the thing off again just yet!
loobyj

Ooo jolly good Glynis! I'm sure you'll be whizzing along in next to no time. I found that I memorised the pattern reasonably quickly - the first 8 stitches sunk in quite quickly and then once I'd twigged with the leafy bit that fell into place!

I've just started the decrease section - but I've not picked it up for three weeks, think I o'd on it on holiday.....

Keep us posted Very Happy

lj
Glynis

Well, I've done an extra two pattern repeats before beginning the increases, and I now have the grand total of three stitches in the garter stitch section.
As you say, it is fairly straight forward, but the variegated yarn adds extra interest without (IMHO) swamping the pattern.
loobyj

I'm beginning to wish I'd done mine in another yarn. The Patons 4ply is good yarn - but not cosy. I know the whole purpose of doing it in that was to see if I liked it and I could manage the pattern - but I'm not sure if I'll have the heart to do another one.....

lj
Alice

I'm desperate to do this as well - and just hoping I've brought the right yarn to France with me. I'll have a good look at what I've got when DD3 goes home on Tues.
Glynis

I have to confess lj, that the sock bfl just doesn't have that lovely drape, especially when knitted on 3.25 needles, but I shall block it lightly and see what happens.
Most important of all though, I'm still enjoying it.

I've now got 25 sts in the garter stitch section
craftybernie

I can't tell from the photo of the lacekerchief scarf but is it lace all over or just at the edges/borders? Also, what shape is it?

Not sure if this helps but here's three yarns I have used for scarves:

Jaeger Matchmaker DK (100% Merino). I used this to knit the Backyard Leaves scarf a few months ago. This knits up beautifully, holds the stitches and drapes well, and is even softer after washing and blocking. Not itchy or scratchy IMO.

King Cole Merino Blend DK (100% wool). I used this to crochet the Forever Stripes scarf from Happy Hooker. This is similar to the Jaeger Matchmaker but a little bit coarser to knit with. It softens up when washed. Although it's anti-tickle it still tickled my skin so not my first choice.... Wink But my scarf pal didn't mind.

Patons Washed Haze (50/50 Cotton/acrylic). I knit Knitty.com's Flora on Saturday eve. in a gorgeous pink colour. It's a short scarf with a st st panel, edged with eylets and seed stitch border. It's lovely and soft against the skin and there's great stitch definition. It's not hard on the hands and easy enough to knit with. It has a nice drape to it.

I'm going to have to find more of this I think for Little miss CB - she's into hot pink (and skull/crossbones patterns at the moment). Shocked And as she doesn't like wearing scarves, I may have finally hit on a yarn that will keep out the cold but still feel nice.

These are all a similar gauge to Garnstudio Muskat (I think) and they all knit up beautifully. Although one is a cotton blend and the other two are merino, they really hold the stitches nicely and wash & block up into lovely soft scarves.
loobyj

The pics aren't fab CB - there aren't many good ones of it.

It starts off all lace, then you gradually increase a garter stitch panel into it and just as you think you can't bear to increase any more, you start decreasing the garter stitch till you're left with just the lace.

Glynis - you're rapidly catching me up, I shall have to get mine out again and get decreasing!

lj
craftybernie

Thanks LJ! BTW, where do you get that mag from?
Glynis

If I may answer CB, I got my copy from Pavi yarns, and their service was great (though of course, that was before the postal strike).

Mines in a full 4ply weight yarn, ie not a thin sock yarn, so it will be a fair bit smaller than the DK version.
craftybernie

Thanks Glyn! I've never bought from Pavi Yarns but I covet alot! Smile
loobyj

GK have also got it - though I don't think it's on the site.

lj
Glynis

OK, so I've finished it and it is "lightly blocking"!!

It measures just about 70 inches in length and is 9.5 inches at its widest, which is a very wearable size, though these dimensions are easy to adjust.
I really think that I like this better as a 4ply knit than I might have done as a DK project.
Next time (!!!) I'll choose a more flattering colour.

Pictures to follow in the next couple of days Smile
loobyj

Horrah!! Shall look forward to the piccies. Very Happy

I really must pick mine back up again - don't know why I haven't done any really...

Alice

Sorry to be posting so rarely atm and only now just when I have a question but we're not having an easy time on holiday in France......

I'm really keen to get started and I've decided to use the yarn in the pattern - Garnstudio Muskat. Does anyone know how fast they are in dispatching? I'm wondering whether to have it sent out to me in France or to home and wait until I get back...

I'm going to go for either colour 45 which is a muddy greeny colour or 23 as long as it's beigey and not lilac-y.

What do you think?
Glynis

It is so hard to choose a colour from the computer screen, isn't it?
I usually try looking at the colour on the two machines at home and one at work to see what variation there might be. On this machine the 45 looks quite a bright clear olive, but this monitor has often got it badly wrong Smile
23 looks like a sort of bamboo shade. Both are nice.

DH has been asked to photograph my LK scarf this evening (it looks better draped round a neck than flat on the sofa).
Glynis

Lacy Kerchief pictures added

I hope these photos work Smile

KnittingLadybird

oooh that's just gorgeous Glynis...I love how it sits so nicely around the neck...not to mention how lovely the colour is too Very Happy
Alice

That's lovely Glynis! I love it being variegated. Very Happy

Can't wait to start mine now!
Glynis

I started another one of these this morning using merino/alpaca sock yarn.
I have less of this than of the other yarn I used, so it will be shorter.

I'm sure Bruce said twice a week during August - something like Monday and Thursday?
Alice

Thanks Cazzie - I've ordered and they are posting it out on Monday so I'll try and get some things finished ready to start when it comes.
loobyj

Glynis - that looks fab - beautifully neat! What are you making your next one in?

lj
Glynis

Thank you lj

The one I'm doing now will be very very much shorter. It is in natural dye studio alpaca/merino- just a little neck-warmer really Laughing because I've got less than 2/3 of the yardage I used for the first one.

However, it is wonderfully soft and luxurious-feeling.
loobyj

Shall look forward to seeing the finished pics of that one too! Sounds like the sort of thing that's perfect for drafty autumn days!

lj
Glynis

Well, I finally finished my second lacy kerchief.
I really like this one. It is made from Natural Dye Studio alpaca/merino.

loobyj

Absolutely gorgeous Glynis - and you are soooooo quick! And I've still not finished my first....

lj
Glynis

The second one was quick because I had the pattern pretty much in my head by then Very Happy
cazzie

That is beautiful Very Happy

How much of the NDS yarn did it take?
Glynis

With the first one, which was NDS bfl I used about 120grammes, for the alpaca/merino I used almost all of the 100g, but didn't do as many increase rows.
cazzie

Thanks - off to see if I have anything suitable - the NDS Alpaca/merino is gorgeous - I have knitted some socks in it

It does look lovely in the colour you choose Very Happy
