Knitting for Thingmas challenge

Ok - in eight weeks time, it will all be over. The dust will have settled on the wrapping paper, the turkey will be a heap of bones on a plate and the dining room ceiling will have a new burn mark where you tried to flambe the pud Laughing But best of all, you can sit back and relax enjoying the chocs along with a black n white weepie on the television. Very Happy

Or will you Question

Might you be sat in a corner sending smoke signals from the speed your needles are going, while all around you sit glowering people holding IOUs for their Thingmas gifts Laughing

I would like to declare now that my annual Thingmas Knitting Panic is open. Roll up, roll up and enjoy the sight Shocked

For absolutely no fee at all you can watch me wrestle with:

One nativity set - all ready for stuffing, but needs to be done by 1st Dec
1 pair gloves - have got second glove syndrome
3 pair adult socks - only one sock complete
3 pairs childrens socks - not started
1 chunky jacket - not even ordered the yarn
1 cardigan for Arwen - am I mad?

But every good show needs more than one exhibit - plenty of room in here - come and join me, confess all and start the challenge Laughing

lj
n

Okay.

Fegrig socks... in Fegrig, naturally Laughing

Fegrig fingerless mitts in (hopefully) leftovers.

ES Fingerless mitts

YS Fingerless mitts

Something for my mum... ? simple smoke-ring perhaps

Soap. For everyone. This takes 4 weeks to cure, so it needs to be done by the week after next.

Chutney, from pumpkin sitting in the kitchen at the moment. (Might get done at the weekend).

n

I need to finish this sock I'm knitting, don't I?
Piglottie

Crikey, I have hardly anything to knit compared to you Looby but will happily join in Smile

1. La Dentelle Belle scarf in Piece of Beauty Silk de la Mer for my mum - started and love it but the going is slow. Only done 3 repeats so far and need to do about 30!

2. Montego Bay scarf for my mum - yet to start.

3. Socks for MrP - in PY Emily but have no idea of pattern.

Plus possibly some other little things which I cant mention here Wink Smile
n

I forgot, I am doing a paw-print dishcloth/washcloth for DH too.

n
loobyj

I've been a bit slack about knitting on the train recently - have been devouring some good books. Rolling Eyes Think I'll have to give that up and do the socks - that's an hour a day five days a week. Is it a good idea to do one sock from each pair do you think? Or should I complete a pair at a time?

n - might you tell us a bit more about the soap making - that sounds like fun!

pl - your projects all sound lovely - and you've done so much already for Thingmas too - do you have a second pair of hands Wink

lj
n

Soap is fun to do. The next time I do it, I'll take pictures.
Not for small peeps to make though, or even to have around you while you make it, as it uses caustic soda. Maybe next week when the Club yarns are all posted.

n
GrannySmith

Loobyj - the offer to stuff is still there Very Happy

Ohh, I am trying to bye lye (??) to make some soap and then give the soap with home made face cloths for presents.

I have organised the sweetie receipes.

Knitting em ............. not comment apart from the face cloths.
slowasasnail

Count me in as well Louise.

So far I have knitted

1 Clapotis for MIL
1 pair of socks for brother
I also decided to knit socks for my class team this year. I have done 3 pairs of socks for this and was winging my way through the final fourth pair when the classroom assistant announced that she was handing in her notice as she'd got a new job. I had finished one pink sock, not yet started on the second but she has big feet - 6 1/2 so now have to wait and see who replaces her. I'm on the interviewing panel but not sure I can make 'foot size' a question! Wink

Anyway I digress. This is what i intend to knit.

1 pair whitewater wristwarmers for SIL (already cast on)
1 Claptois for MIL
1 pair of socks for DH (already cast on but hiding at the bottom of the wardrobe for times when i'm alone)
And another 8 pairs of socks which I think might be wishful thinking.

Let the countdown commence

LOL I wish! The knitting will be a problem though as I'm such a slow knitter Sad Oh, and I would knit socks in pairs, just in case you run out of time and end up with two odd socks rather than a pair.

GrannySmith wrote:

You can buy it at places like Wilko or hardware stores GS - just ask for caustic soda. Have you made it before? If not, be careful as a girl from my old soapmaking group burnt a whole in her leg through to the bone and had to have surgery! Sad But if you are careful and follow so basic safety instructions, you should be fine.

And Snail! Thats a lot of knitting - good luck! Smile

Yes, definitely an adult only activity. I wouldn't do it in the same house as children AT ALL.
I have found I can get Caustic Soda in Homebase, but not in B&Q where they want to sell concoctions of "drain cleaner" with other stuff in it as well.

n
GrannySmith

I have been reading all the safety tips Cool

I will be careful Rolling Eyes just as well I wasn't making it today though, just had one of those days Confused

What is the best thing to make it in i.e. not the bowl but the mould, if I can help it, I don't want to buy any moulds, well not the first time anyway.
n

Maybe we should have a thread for this?
I'll go and start one.
n
GrannySmith

Mods - would you like to move the soap stuff to the new thread, please, GS xx
n

I put it in Thingmas, even though a bar of soap is for lifelong cleanliness, not just a Thingmas scrub up. Laughing

n
franney

I'd love to make soap but i am just too cack-handed to do it!

I don't have any Thingmas knitting planned, i don't know anyone that would appreciate my efforts apart from maybe Mum and there's nothing i can think of that she needs that i could make for her since she went on a bit of a mad spree at scarf making out of novelty yarns Rolling Eyes
Cathie

I have quite a list of stuff i want to make for christmas as well.

3 clapotis ( 1 almost done)
3 pairs of DK socks for my dad ( 1 pair done)
1 jumper for DH
1 hat for my dad
3 other scarfs as well

Not sure where I am going to find the time to do it but I'll give it a good shot

Cathie
knittingnanny

I have some completed Very Happy

Baby shawl - will be delivered at Thingmas

1 small flower basket shawl for Best Friend
Hat and scarf for Best Friend's DH

Odessa and Bertie - Red / Purple Fusion

Bertie - Inca Cloud
Odessa - LH Angora
Both of these need their partners!! That's 3 sets in total, but the scarves are great for portable knits.

OTN for Thingmas
DD's jacket

Also OTN
Rose of England Shawl - long term project
Shoalwater
DH's 1st pair of socks (but not urgent!!)
loobyj

Cool - so many fellow panickers - welcome along Laughing

PL - good point about odd socks Very Happy I'll stick with the pairs. And actually when I said I knitted one sock, I fibbed. Embarassed I've knitted one sock to about 20 rows into the foot. Embarassed

Still knitting day on 17th should see loads done Confused 'Cos I don't talk much, so I'll just sit in the corner and knit Wink

janice

Oh good gawd where do I start Shocked Let me see I have
DB Alphabet blanket to finish
DB sleeping bag to finish
A sheep shawl to start (in yellow)
Then there are the various other baby related things I want to knit Rolling Eyes
And several pairs sock (3 are for men Laughing )

And I've started a cross stitch Christmas Tree card to send to my ma&pa Very Happy

Did someone say less than 8 weeks Shocked Right that's it, no sleep for the next few weeks Wink
FatCat

OMG, how did I miss this thread? Obviously trying to ignore Thingmas ... Laughing OK, well I've done 3 Clapotises (Clapoti? whatever the plural is). I still need to do:

Beret for sister - currently OTN
Urchin for other sister
3 pairs of Fetchings (one for each sister and one for mum)
2 pairs of Dashings (one for each BIL)
Socks for Mr FC - more than one pair would be good

Then a couple of maybes, if I have time:
Something for Mr FC's mother
Something for an elderly female family friend that always spends Christmas Day with us

... erm, ok, that's wiped the smug "I'm ahead of the game here" look right off my face! Eek! Thanks so much loobyj, wasn't panicking at all until I listed it all out Shocked Wink Laughing
loobyj

You're welcome - always happy to share with my friends - welcome aboard. And I must say, that's some list!

lj
slowasasnail

Don't worry. I keep telling myself its not even December yet Wink
FatCat

never one to do things by halves, me Rolling Eyes Laughing I doubt I'll get it all done, things will fall by the wayside I'm sure!

LOL at Snail, December's ages away! It's only just November surely there's plenty of time ....?

All done! I have a note which reminds me of Knitting Days To Christmas.

n
Catknit

hmmm,
fingerless mitts X 5 pairs in sizes from age 4 to age 68.
socks x 1 pair in 4 ply size 5
socks for boots x 2 in size 10
Secret of Chrysopolis stole 1/2 done
1 clapotis done 1 to go.
3 Wire & Bead necklaces for gifts, 9 commission ones
6 x wire & bead candle holders (candles already made)

So the fingerless mitts are about 1 1/2 evenings per pair.
Socks are the 'on the go' waiting for DD in her dance class knitting. so about 7 hours per week covered.
Chrysopolis stole - 1 Saturday per clue.
Clapotis- as and when
wire necklaces, commission ones to be done by mid December to avoid customers worrying about not having wrapped presents. 1 1/2 hours each.
- less if I bribe DD's into threading the beads for me- their eyesight is better.
Wire & bead candle holders- as above especially the beads. Have also told DD1 that she can make one herself for her Dad's present, DD2 helped to make the candles.
Also want to finish a sweater for me to wear in the holidays, back and most of front done and 1 sleeve so only the other sleeve and a very big ribbed collar left to do.
Oh and work too.....
loobyj

Welcome along Catknit - that's some list you've got too Shocked

I remembered a tea cosy and a slipover I'd missed off my original list..... Confused Still I'm not giving up yet.

lj
FatCat

OK, panicked into action after listing it all here I got on with some knitting last night. Finished the beret, started on the Urchin Very Happy So, in November I will mostly be making fingerless mitts .... Rolling Eyes Laughing

WOW Shocked you're not wrong there n, that's brilliant! Thank you Very Happy
loobyj

So six weeks today is the BIG DAY Shocked How's everyone doing?

My report would say - Louise would do much better if she concentrated on the task in hand and stopped talking. Very Happy

So 1 sock is up to the toe turning.
Another sock (from another pair) is halfway through the cuff (and it's cuff down Sad ).
The fingerless glove still has no mate.
Only one sheep is stuffed, so only 5 animals and 7 people to go
Rogue is going well - hoorah Very Happy

lj
FatCat

Stop talking Louise and concentrate on the task in hand .... Wink Laughing

I'm just as bad though! I've finished the beret and done the Urchin but they were really quick knits. I've done one Fetching and will cast on its partner tonight. So that will leave 2 pairs of Fetchings and 2 pairs of Dashings and at least 1 pair of socks Sad Bah. Humbug.
Piglottie

I'm going so slowly! Sad I'm just such a slow knitter and knit lace really slowly, esp as purling always makes my wrists play up so I cant do too much. Its taking me about an hour to do a pattern repeat on my mum's scarf, and so far I've only done 8! I need to get a move on, as I haven't even started the other stuff.
slowasasnail

Well not much going on here either.

Must try harder.
KnittingLadybird

I've already done 3 scarves..one blue in colinette mohair...a burgundy one in colinette tagliatelli and mohair...and liesel in 'grubby tiger merino'
(must remember to post things here Confused)

I've done a pair of socks for mam...need to upload finished pic.
I've got a forest canopy half done...will get finished though Very Happy

and then it's another pair of socks for sis.

i'll try and get some small things done as I go (urchin is calling again Wink)

so i'm nearly done Very Happy
Alice

You're all getting on so well I'm feeling really panicky now... I've hardly started except for two or three pairs of longish man-socks...oh and a scarf. But I've still got two November birthdays before I can concentrate properly on you know.
loobyj

Well - after all my hopes for lots of knitting yesterday, I failed miserably and talked too much Embarassed Noo was very good and didn't quite say 'I told you so' Laughing

So, there is now A Proper Plan. Shocked

Socks, and fingerless glove, to be knitted on the train. That's 80 mins per day @ roughly 25 days, round about 33 hours, to make about 12 single socks.

Each evening I'll sew and stuff a nativity figure.

The rest of each evening, I'll concentrate on Rogue and the chunky jacket.

lj - A Woman with a Mission Very Happy
slowasasnail

Keeping everything crossed. Tonight I'm hoping to finish the wristwarners for SIL. Then its cast on another Clapotis and only 3 pairs of socks to go.
Auntie Noo

I was a bit cruel though wasn't I Embarassed - I did keep asking you where your knitting was!!

I can't list anything 'cos of mum, and we do all enjoy looking at everyone else's presents too...... but I have

3 thingy's
1 dooodad
1 hooofanflangendanger

and a couple of odds and sodds if I have time!!!! - I'm nearly finished one of the thingy's!
slowasasnail

Just finished SIL's wristwarmers.
n

I am failing miserable at this.
At this rate DH will be getting yarn and needles and a pattern to DIH-S. Shocked

n
loobyj

Got Rogue up to the bit where I split for front and back last night - so very pleased with that. Will post a pic on the KAL thread later.

12 rounds of sock done on the train this morning - another 12 tonight will see me to the heel turn.

And I've also got A List of Priority. Mr L's socks are at the bottom Laughing

lj
Cathie

Not getting very far with mine either. I've ended up buying a scarf for one friend and my mum is knitting another.

I've managed to down size some of the larger items I was making for hand warmers instead. So have 4 pairs of them to make (gained a few more to the list after showing my first ones round)

I have the front and straps to do on my mums bag and 3 and a half socks to finish my dads.

DH's jumper hadn't been picked up for well over a week until last night and I have done almost 13 inches on the back in total, it's mind numbingly boring with all the rib. Going to have to try and get a bit done on it everyday of he will be having it for his birthday in october instead.

Cathie

Maybe I need one of these too. Rolling Eyes
Maybe I could knit one.

n
loobyj

Hmm - not sure that last week was a very good week, despite The Plan. Three evenings out and the Rogue recipient staying at the weekend meant that I've made very little progress on it - bang goes my 1st December target for that Sad

I did complete two socks (not from the same pair Confused ) and a glove - so the train knitting is still going well. All is not lost.

Am going to France on a coach in two weeks time - and will have an eye-watering amount of time on said coach - that should see off a couple of children's socks.

It Will Be Fine.

lj
Auntie Noo

Sounds like you're doing very well. I think you have plenty of time for what you have left. yay for your FOs so far!
Cathie

I've been further cheating on my knitting.

My mum has taken yet another knitted scarf of my hands, and when we went to Llandudno yesterday I picked up a few bits in home bargains and 3 for 2 in M+S so have canceled the need for 3 pairs of hand warmers and a scarf.

My new list is

DH's jumper, the back done up to the arms and I can't find the pattern
Rowan cable dolly back, the back and strap to do
Almost finished dads 2nd pair of socks and 1 more to make.
2 baby croc scarfs,
1 adult croc scarf
3 pairs of hand warmers
And if I get the time I have also said I will make my dad a cabled hat, my sister a croc scarf, and a cardigan and bootee set for my friends new baby to go with the nasty free toiletries gifts set I've brought her.

That is still a huge list!

Cathie
loobyj

Thank you Noo for being my personal cheerleader Very Happy

That's a good list though Cathie - you've got some smallish items there which shouldn't be too bad to knock off Very Happy What's the Croc scarf?

lj
GrannySmith

Your complete list is growing, which is the right direction Very Happy

Did you have a good weekend?
FatCat

I like Cathie's idea of moving stuff off the list!

LJ, OK, so not much knitting done but sounds like you had a fun week Very Happy

Mine's plodding along. I've got a scarf done and started on another, and finished the first of a pair of socks for my sister and am on the second one. So, along with those two things currently OTN I've still to do:

two pairs of Dashings
socks for my other sister
socks for Mr FC

That's not too bad. Although I was livid last night - I spent most of the weekend working on a sock for Mr FC and realised yesterday teatime that a) it was coming out far too big and b) I didn't like the patterning anyhow. Frogged Evil or Very Mad But that was the best part of two days wasted Sad

Ooooh Fatcat I feel your pain, nothing worse than frogging!

I did this yesterday

(and it took me a good few hours!) - had to frog once, but it's coming along ok now - if a little slow. I'm trying to persevere with two handed knitting at the same time so hopefully it'll get faster. Fatcat this is the yarn you swapped me in the very Iwasawinner biased swap!!!! - It looks fab, and if I get these finished they'll be an extra gift for my sister.

Meanwhile 2 x thingy's are now complete. Scarf for family friend is about 2/3 way there, and one doodadd is 25% done. - Not great but I think I'm ok for finishing on time!
FatCat

LOL! That is brilliant cheerleading! Are there no ends to your talents? I do hope you made your own pompoms. And socks Laughing

oh wow, Noo! That mitt looks awesome lovehearts And don't start me off on that old who-won-that-swap bickering - I still think I won Cool I couldn't have done anything as beautiful as that with that yarn, it's definitely found the right home with you Very Happy

lj
Sprite64

Wow - that's gorgeous!

I measured up my Dad for socks today - don't think there's much chance of me finishing them in time though. I have cast on and done about 8 rows - I'm doing toe-up socks in a simple garter rib (knit every other row - probably the fastest thing I can do apart from stocking stitch which I don't really like for socks).
Glynis

You know, I might think about starting my Thingmas knitting next week... for 2008!
Piglottie

Noo the mitts are stunning! I love them Smile  My Thingmas knitting is woefully behind and doubtful now whether I shall get one thing finishes, let only the 3 I was hoping for.  Oh well, there's always next year Very Happy
KnittingLadybird

Noo, I love your mittens they are gorgeous!

I'm quite on track really...just a crochet number i'm not sure about to finish, (although this was replaced with a scarf I knit earlier in the year and had added to my emergency last minute pressie box lol). so I may frog it.
I've a collar and sewing up of a chunky cardy for Millie...and a pair of socks not yet started but not exactly promised that they would be for Christmas either Wink

My list has been tweaked cos I want a new jumper!!!!! (it's sodding freezing and if the rain hits my windows any harder....i'm moving my chair to the other side of the room Shocked

Good Luck to everyone and I hope you all find your knitting mojos!!!!!
FatCat

Noo that is just stunning!   heart  Absolutely gorgeous  Very Happy
loobyj

Ha!  One complete pair of sock is finished.  Ha!  Only another three and a half pairs to go Rolling Eyes

Rogue is still going well - front and back finished - halfway up the first sleeve and will finish that tonight.

Another sock will be cast on at lunchtime.

Haven't made as much progress as I would like on the nativity set - but I've got three days holiday next week - so will devote some daylight hours to it then.

It's not going too bad.  Everything else has been neglected.  But the knitting's ok  Laughing

You're going to make it!!!!
Cathie

Some lovely items finished,  I'm plodding through mine very slowly now,  I finished of my croc scarf and made it to short, I somehow misread the pattern.  I have cast on for my second in un SKD paris cotton, will post pictures later when there are no little eyes around.

My mum has done a croc scarf for me and has cast of for a second as well, after those I have left to knit

DH's jumper (still can't find the pattern!)
An adult croc for a friend
2 pairs of hand warmers
1 pair of socks for my dad and a hat
Oh almost forgot my mums bag, thats next on the list once I get my current socks finished.

I'm still removing things of the list as I find suitable gifts.  I think as well once I am done I will start knitting for next year as well.  I have been totally disorganised this year.  But I also think that with having a little more kknitting time in the shop I have taken on much more than I usually do

Cathie
FatCat

oh my word ...... I'm done.  I have finished my Christmas knitting!    The last thing was a scarf which I cast off last night and it just needs blocking.  I am so relieved!

I did a few rows of a scarf for me late last night, just because I didn't feel guilty about working on something for me again.  And have spent half an hour this morning tinking it back to find where I'd picked up an extra stitch and not noticed  Rolling Eyes  That wiped the smug grin off my face  Laughing

Nice MM Noo BTW...
n
Auntie Noo

thank you n - It was truly forum inspired - Your orginal suggestion for the pattern, seeing Jane's, yarn swapped by Fatcat...... it's an all round thing!!!!!
Cathie

Update on my thingamas knitting.

I have finished the back of DH's jumper having at last found the pattern, and done 2 inches on the front.  I have also knitted the straps of my mums bag and made a 2inch start on the front.

I have also finished a croc scarf and started another (think I have already mentioned that!!?)

I have also hit a hitch as well, I recieved a custom order through babykind for abroad, I asked the lady if she could wait till after christmas cause with the posting date being the 13th I would be cutting it fine.  I also thought that I could get my christmas knitting done then start on her order once I was clear.  But she said she wants it for christmas, never mind best laid plans and all that.

croc scarfs, one knitted by me and the others by my mum.

She has also knitted a seafoam scarf and an adult croc scarf, and is now asking for more projects to keep her busy.  I think she needs to get down the LYS and treat herself to a project or two but she'd rather pinch mine I think

Cathie
Glynis

She'll be asking to join the forum next, Cathie Wink
Cathie

I did suggest it to her, but I can't see her joining, though it would be nice if she did, there is so much out there that she is missing.

Cathie
FatCat

wow, you're getting lots done, brilliant!  LOL at your mum stealing your projects - that would drive me mad! Perhaps you could buy her an assortment of yarn for Christmas and point her in the direction of Knitty or Magknits?   Laughing
loobyj

Just to round things off for this thingmas thought it would be good to see how everyone got on.

I knitted two pairs of adult socks - both were happily recieved - but didn't manage any of the children's pairs, or the pair for Mr L.

Chunky jacket for my sister was finished and unwrapped on Christmas Day - she was really happy with it (she'd chosen both pattern and yarn).

Rogue was finished on New Year's Eve and given to my niece in the afternoon.  She loved it - and I was really pleased with the fit and look of it on her.

The fingerless glove is still partnerless, though the partner is the only thing on the needles at the mo - so will be finished soon.

The nativity set is still sadly unstuffed - except for three sheep who are stuffed but legless  Laughing

So, not too bad - but deffo need to start earlier for Thingmas 08  Confused

lj
Cathie

I didn't get half the stuff finished that I wanted to.  I didn't manage to finish DH's jumper it is still sat here with just one arm and shoulder to seam.

I finished my mums bag and the one croc scarf that my mum didn't pinch of me.  My dad had 2 and a half pairs of socks for christmas which made his day, he did eventually get the partner for his odd sock.

I also never got the hand warmers made, and ended up buying DVDs of faulty towers for my granparents instead and little token gifts for everyone else.

I too will be starting a lot earlier on my xmas knitting, as well as perhaps not line up so many projects, and consider closing to custom ordering a fornight before christmas.  I had orders constantly in the run up which surprised me as usually sales stop and drip in intermitently until just before the weather warms up again.

Cathie
loobyj

You did well though Cathie - that's still quite a lot you got through Very Happy

But you're right - starting much earlier is the key.  I always knit socks for one of my sisters and my niece, but don't do them until the autumn, but I could do them earlier in the year.

I've had knitting overload for the last few weeks, which took some of the enjoyment out of it - I want to avoid that in future.

lj
Cathie

Definatly earlier the better I think.

May start working on stuff throughout the year rather than leaving it till a couple of months before.  I do think I piled the projects on to much through.  But I do think if I hadn't had the orders in the run up to christmas then I would have cleared everything that I wanted to.

I think I suffered from knitting overload as well to a certain extent andI totally agree rushing to finish things takes all the fun out of it.

Cathie
