KIRI-ALONG...So who would like to have a go? It's a lovely pattern, not really hard either.
I have one nearly finished and the urge to cast on now for another to go in this thread. You can do it in different weights of yarn (like for the Forest canopy).
The pattern is a PDF...KIRI

Apparently I'm in on this one Just waiting for the postie to bring my yarn from CJ
It's my first full-sized lace project, thank goodness it's written out and not just charts. So I think I'll be hollering here for help and support. Expect tantrums and frogging
Ah yes, must remember lifelines
KnittingLadybird
I haven't used the charts either FC...welcome aboard

OK, just been reading the pattern (I like to prepare) and I'm stuck already
I think I understand the provisional cast-on, but I can probably work that out as I go along, but then it says to knit 14 rows. That's just garter stitch is it? I would have thought so, because then you pick up the ridges, but I thought I'd better check rather than falling at the first hurdle.
Sorry, just that I'm not familiar with shawl construction etc yet.
Thanks!
CJ

OK, I could be persuaded too, but just got to finish my lace scarf first.

yes you just do garter st for 14 rows over 3 stitches....then you pick 7 sts across and then 3 at the other end....I cheated and did a lace cast on and just 'picked up' 3 sts

I could be in for this one, but Im away for a week so I would have to be a late starter if thats ok?

The strange thing is that before the forum I hadn't knitted any thing but toys since Ive been busy on the forum I havent knitted a single toy
CJ
does that mean you've cast on with the laceweight already, Linz? I managed another 5 repeats of my scarf, so only 15 more to go, then I can start mine too. Maybe next weekend, so I can start at the same time as you, Binty? Unless you're away for longer, that is.
Binty
CJ Im back on Bank Holiday Monday so I will hope to be starting then
FatCat
Thanks for the explanation Linz, I thought it did mean garter stitch and ... I was right! Hurrah. Have just been puzzling over the random K1 in the pattern that isn't between the * for repeating, but then I thought to look at the charts - centre stitch, doh. Now it makes sense
My laceweight has just arrived from CJ - it's gorgeous, thanks again CJ - so I might start on it this weekend, unless I get distracted into something else, easily done
CJ
I'll try and have my scarf done by the bank holiday then Glad you like it FC.

Here's my progress so far...loving the colours in this yarn
cazzie
Thats pretty - love the colour
CJ
ooo, that's looking fantastic. Can I ask what size needles you're using, so I can do the same with my laceweight when I start?
KnittingLadybird
I'm using 4.5mm CJ. I was going to use the 4mm like it did for the other one but I think this looks better (this is the size used in the original pattern)
Looking forward to seeing yours CJ
CJ
thanks. I think I might have to knit a swatch, cos I thought my knitting on 4.5mm was too holey!!!

After looking at Linz's lovely shawl in the Look what I made thread I'd love to join in with this knitalong. I have some lovely grey/blue laceweight just waiting to be knitted up into a shawl - and a free pattern sounds like a good idea The only problem is I have to wind it all into a ball which might take a while as I am very busy at the moment. Hoping to get it done this week ready to start next week. I have nothing planned for the bank holiday weekend and it will be the perfect opportunity to start the shawl.
FatCat
wow, that's looking great Linz! I cast on yesterday after all. Here's mine so far, it might look a tad familiar ....
Had a lightbulb moment with the pattern in the third repeat and I finally understood it, before then I was blindly following the instructions and hoping that I'd get to the centre stitch when I was supposed to But now I can see where I'm supposed to be at any one stage. I'm on 4.5mm needles too.
Also loving this yarn, it's thicker than the laceweight I've struggled with until now so I'm finding it easier going. I've called it Halloween, because the colours remind me of pumpkins and bonfires and Autumn
But I shall be slowing down on it from now on - longer rows, and not much free time to concentrate on it.
Aknita
I'm all confused now 'cos FatCat is here and you were here yesterday too
It looks lovely
FatCat
not as confused as I am - you've changed your avatar missus!
Yeah, sorry, was here yesterday to PM Pictish and CJ to say things had arrived safely and had to come online just now to check some stuff for work so thought while I was here I'd catch up with the forum too.

You can't do anything can you Avatar change explained on this thread

ah. I'd completely missed that thread Thanks!
Noggin the Nog was one of my faves too - but I really liked Nogbad the Bad ....

That's looking fab FC...I'm on repeat row 7.
CJ
your's is looking fab too, FC. I found that with this laceweight too, it's really nice to knit with. I'm still plodding away at my scarf though, so I expect you and Linz will be long finished before I start.

I was confused seeing FC this weekend too
FatCat
sorry for confusing people I hadn't realised how many of you knew my posting routine! I will try not to post at weekends ever again
I've done the fourth repeat now. I did have to do some maths and have written out how many stitches I should have at the end of each pattern row, and I do stop to count to make sure.
it is lovely yarn to knit with isn't it? Thanks again CJ And I think you'll probably overtake me anyhow, I can't see me getting much done on it for the next couple of weeks at least

I'm sorry, I feel like a stalker now
| Quote: | | I've done the fourth repeat now. I did have to do some maths and have written out how many stitches I should have at the end of each pattern row, and I do stop to count to make sure. |
I did this with Forest Canopy too - blooming good job as well, invariably I was a YO out somewhere
FatCat
LOL, Joy you're not a stalker. You're someone who notices things - and that's good Anyhow, if you're a stalker then there are other people here that are as well, me included!
I am glad I did the maths, haven't been a stitch out yet, but I know the moment I don't check then I will be I'm also using a lifeline - putting it in at the end of each pattern repeat. I couldn't bear to have to frog right back to the start now!
loobyj
Hmm - I came across the pattern and yarn for this on Saturday - had obviously put it away safely..... So I could be joining in, BUT I'm trying to finish some on the needles stuff first. So I'll bring up the rear and learn from all your questions!
lj
CJ
well, I gave in and cast on again for the 4th time last night - only to frog yet again. Laceweight and evening knitting don't go well together, as I'm too tired and blind!! I need the daylight, but little chance of that with the kids around.
So, this one is on hold until I'm capable of knitting with the thin stuff, as frogging is getting a bit tedious now.
FatCat
oh no CJ! All that frogging But I know what you mean, I can't do it in the evening either. I was lucky that I had a free weekend by myself and so had the time and light and peace and quiet to concentrate on it.
Leave it for a while and then try again? Don't give up on it completely! I'm an utter dunce at lace with laceweight yarn and so if I can do it then I'm totally sure that you can
LOL at loobyj just "happening to come across" the yarn and the pattern .... !
CJ
thanks FC. My fault really, cos I should have waited until I'd totally got rid of my cold!! I might try swallowtail first in 4ply, then just a really easy lace pattern in laceweight first, as I don't want to put myself off.
KnittingLadybird
aw CJ...I hope you join in later...and swallowtail is nice too.
(i'll admit I did jump in at the deep end using the parisienne but I normally just go up a couple of needle sizes and practise with dk first lol)
Get yourself all better first and join in when you feel up to it {{{{{hug}}}}
CJ
thanks, KLB. had this cold a week now and it's beginning to get a bit tedious, especially cos I keep waking myself up coughing in the night.
only 6 more repeats on my lace scarf now, then I can try another shawl, whichever one I decide on.
KnittingLadybird
(click for bigger pics)
Finished 12 repeats....going to go for 14 I think...
After FC named hers 'Halloween'...i'm calling mine 'Autumnal Embers'
Jobo
Oh Ladybird - those colours are to die for - very autumnal indeed - your shawl is going to be gorgeous
CJ
KLB, it's gorgeous. It looked nothing like that on the skein or in a wound up ball.
KnittingLadybird
The colours are coming through lovely aren't they?...It looked so much browner in the ball. There's even purply and pinky shades in there too
CJ
I thought it looked tigerish on the ball. I always knew I was blind!!!!!
KnittingLadybird
I really love this yarn...it's nice to knit with. I wish i'd bought both now
CJ
well, *clears throat*, I have to confess I have rather a lot of it in several colours, and I'm not even sure I can manage laceweight.
KnittingLadybird
ebil you....let me know if you need me to make more space for you lol
FatCat
wow Linz, that's beautiful! Autumnal Embers, perfect And I'm glad I managed to get that other ball of yarn before you snaffled both It is very lovely yarn.
*pushes KLB out of the way in the fight for any more laceweight from CJ*
Erm yes CJ, I think you've got more than one buyer lined up should you decide to sell . ... but I think you should give laceweight another try first!
I haven't done any more of mine, have had an absolute pig of a cold for the last few days Must be something doing the rounds.
loobyj
Now - who said they did a lace cast on?? Was that instead of the provisional cast-on, or have I misunderstood?
Chart or written instructions - whaddaya think?
Have been reading the pattern through in preparation Though I am getting a touch of the collys about the KSH...
lj
FatCat
Linz did the lace cast on instead of the provisional. I did the provisional (first time ever) and it worked just fine for me. So either works
I'm using the written instructions, just because I have a choice and they're easier for me than charts. But tis up to you!
You have KSH? Wow What colour? Bet it's gorgeous
CJ
yes, I will be having another go with laceweight, but going to practise with 4ply a bit more first. already frogged 4 rows of my swallowtail. my fault for trying to knit with screeching kids in the background.
loobyj
Well I think it's gorgeous - but then funny colours suit me It's Jelly, which is the exact colour of lime jelly. And it is very snuggly! And one of the balls has survived being played with by a lively boxer dog and then untangled and rewound. Sometimes I'm surprised at how much patience I've got
I prefer written instructions to a chart - but I wondered if that was the chickens way But obviously not if cats use writing too!!!!!!
I must not get sucked into this before I finish Cozy!!!!!!!!
lj
FatCat
yep, us cats can do charts or writing, but we prefer writing if we can get it Your Jelly colour sounds amazing! And I can't believe you had the patience to rewind a whole tangled ball, well done! I did wonder about mentioning Cozy to you ..... Nah, knit whatever you like when you like, it's supposed to be enjoyable not a chore
Oh no CJ, not more frogging What a pain. But I'm the same, the slightest distraction means I mess up with the lace - even just letting my mind wander off into a daydream for a couple of minutes results in having to tink I don't think I'd be able to knit anything at all if I had kids around me!
Dawn
Well I have just spent the last two hours winding my yarn into a ball. I had to keep stopping to rest my wrists as it was hard work I have also ordered some Addi lace circulars which I may receive tomorrow so I am all set to start. I just need a couple of hours peace and quiet to study the pattern and get going. Off to print the pattern off now.
CJ
yes, I have to admit to having a mind like a pea. I may have to resort to ticking off every single stitch I do, as my brain isn't even capable of remembering an 8 stitch repeat.
KnittingLadybird
loobyJ...I love lime green ...hope you join in soon...I liked using the parisienne for this pattern so I know KSH is just lovely. I'm pretty sure 'jelly' is the original colourway...well it's looks like it to me
CJ...aw not more frogging...you'll get there in the end though
And FC....we both have excellent taste
Dawn
Well I've started - not sure if I'll finish though Did the provisional cast on bit ok after a couple of false starts, I had to abandon the new addi lace circs in favour of my old faithful Beehive straights. I am finding knitting with such fine yarn a bit tricksy. I have got to row 10 of chart one and have had to stop for a much needed cuppa Hopefully with perseverance I will get to grips with it. It will not be something I can knit when my grand-daughter is here though - I need total concentration. Will post a progress picture when I've done a bit more.
Dawn
After a break for lunch and another to clean the bathroom, I've finished chart one and feel a bit more confident. I have had to do quite a bit of unpicking but I can see a pattern emerging.
Now - do I do the ironing or have a go at chart two???? Decisions, decisions.
CJ
Very nice, I love the colour.
KnittingLadybird
ooooh dawn it's looking lovely....very pretty colourway too.
I think getting the first lot of rows on chart 2 done is a must if you're on roll....it's gets so much easier after that .
Nevisknitter
Just joined the forum but been doing this since mid April, heres progress so far
Got 1 more repeat to do of chart 2 and then chart 3. Its KSH shade trance. My first ever time with KSH and I'm loving it.
Dawn
Well done Nevisknitter, yours looks a very similar colour to mine. Mine is laceweight from Middle Earth Yarns, the shade is called Galadriel's Mirror.
CJ
yours' is lovely too, NK
Wildpurl
What a lovely colour.
FatCat
wow, they're both beautiful!
KnittingLadybird
Mine's finished..piccies will follow shortly. I ended up doing 16 repeats, I had quite a bit left but I was getting a bored (and impatient lol).
I think it's going to block quite big
CJ
looking forward to seeing it
Nevisknitter
Finished mine last night, used 3 balls of KSH, did 13 repeats of chart 2 and had 18" of yarn left. Got to block it yet, unblocked pictures on my blog.
CJ
it looks gorgeous, NK, even without blocking.
FatCat
wow NK, it looks gorgeous!
And looking forward to the pics of yours Linz
I haven't touched mine for over a week, not had the time, so it's where it was at the last time I mentioned it

KnittingLadybird

All done!...it needs blocking again as I was getting so impatient lol so the points aren't pointy enough. ah well.
The colours are just beautiful, the pics don't do it justice at all.
CJ
KLB, that's soooo gorgeous. *Wishes hadn't sold it now.* But I can't knit with dark colours - must be going blind in my old age or something.
KnittingLadybird
I struggle with darker colours too CJ...as long as I have good light though i'm fine but no good after teatime lol.
You have plenty of other nice colours to choose from
CJ
phew, it's not just me then. I can only do my lace knitting after tea when the kids are in bed and DH is banished from speaking. Yes, I do have several nice colours of it - the pink one, another blue/green/yellow one and a green/yellow one and a purple/yellow one. No more lace for me now as on stashalong, but I might colour a couple of skeins tonight as I've no solid laceweight.
KnittingLadybird
this is mearly a suggestion....but you have been sucessful in the dyeing brigade and after seeing littleberry's swallowtail...How about over dyeing some?...maybe go over the yellow and green one with some nice blue?
And then you haven't broken your stashalong
(i'm a stashalong saviour lol)
FatCat
ooh, ooh, ooh! (the funky gibbon strikes again ) Linz, that is gorgeous! And I'm doubly happy cos I'll have one just like it once I get on with it It's seriously lovely
CJ, how much laceweight? It all sounds lovely though, get on and knit some of it up!
KnittingLadybird
FC I completed 16 body repeats...it's big!. Your's will be beautiful too
CJ
yes, well I had to make the order worthwhile FC, it was coming all the way from uraguay.
overdyeing is a good idea, but I do have some undyed laceweight in my stash too.
KnittingLadybird
well you have all eventualities covered then CJ lol
Nevisknitter
linz, your kiri looks good, doubt I'll get mine blocked before next week.

| KnittingLadybird wrote: | FC I completed 16 body repeats...it's big!. Your's will be beautiful too |
ah, had forgotten that Well, I'll see how I feel as I'm going along, but mine might well end up smaller than yours - it'll be the Mr Corbett to your Mr Barker, the Two Ronnies of the Kiri world
Dawn
Unfortunately I have had to abandon my Kiri. I was really struggling with the laceweight. I have hand/wrist/elbow problems and just couldn't seem to hold the yarn/needles in a comfortable position. After going to bed three nights running with aching arms I have decided to undo it. I think I will try knitting it double and making a scarf or something. I found the pattern easy enough so might try it again at a later date in 4 ply.
Congratulations to Nevisknitter and Knitting Ladybird on your finished Kiris
Dawn
After failing dismally with the laceweight, I cast on again in Rowan 4ply Soft using bigger needles. I am now up to the eleventh pattern repeat and it is going so slow. I have over 300 stitches now and it is taking ages to do a row. I have gone from knitting three repeats a night, to two, then one, now I am lucky if I manage four rows before getting bored. Hoping to finish it next week in time to go on holiday. It will be perfect for sitting outside in the evening. If it ever stops raining.
