July spinningI thought I'd start a thread for my July spinning if that's ok.
Here's my pink shetland - 28wpi, so laceweight
And my Spunky CorriePaca - 20wpi, so not sure if this is heavy laceweight or 4ply.
I'm now spinning my spunky june club fibre which is merino/mohair. I've actually spun a whole bobbin of this since the photo was taken though.

Gorgeous yarns from both of you CJ and Sprite! I am extremely impressed with how quickly you have both taken to this spinning lark

CJ

thanks everyone.
Sharon, I love your batt too, I think the colour is great. You seem to be getting on really well with your new wheel. I'm very envious though and want a new one too.

They all look fab. I am jealous as I have no time for spinning at the mo.

Thanks! Your spinning is lovely too I do love my Rose - although I do feel a tiny bit guilty about how much it cost - but hopefully it will last me a long time!
I really want to get some carders now and have a go at blending some different fibres. I might treat myself next payday

well, my first attempt at navajo plying was interesting. not sure I'm that keen on how it looks but never mind. here's the first skein of my spunky eclectic fibre club spun up, one more to do, but I'm waiting a day or two for the singles to be less energised on the bobbin.
And this is currently OTB - more spunky stuff, but bFL this time.

navajo? what does that mean? and how is it different?
Anyhow it looks fab!

They are all gorgeous, well done girls!
I can't remember the last time i picked up my spindle

Navajo plying is when, rather than spin two singles against each other to form a two ply yarn, you make a sort of finger crochet chain with one single by making a loop, pulling a loop through it, pulling a loop through that etc and spinning the chain against the twist to form a sort of cabled three ply yarn from the one single.
It is good for maintaining the colour repeats as they are in a painted single whereas plying two singles gives you more of a barber pole effect where different colours meet.
Hope that helps.

oh my good god that sounds complicated!!
|
CJ
|
yes, it felt complicated - you should have heard the swearing going on.
Anyway, thanks all. My next lot is now dry. As I'm taking part in the tour de fleece, I thought i should challenge myself. Everyone seems to be spinning thick and thin super soft singles, so I had a go. I think it's come out ok though, using yarn yard club fibre.

Wow, theres some amazing yarn there. I am getting more tempted by this spinning lark, better start saving now for next years Woolfest.

Lovely yarns CJ and Sprite.
I would love to try spinning one day (don't tell DH he thinks I spend enough on yarny things already) maybe when I retire.

CJ

thanks
I only wish I'd started sooner, cos at the mo, I'm enjoying the spinning more than the knitting!! what should I do with all the yarn though - lol!!!

Make a very special snuggly blankie!

well, I've just measure the wpi of the flowering weeds merino/mohair one I navajo plied and it's come out 16 wpi, so 4ply. i might actually make a pair of socks cos I have over 300m and that's more than jitterbug yardage.

Oooooh, mohair socks, how decadent!
|
CJ
|
well, I'm pretty sure I can't wear mohair round my neck, but my feet should be ok.

- I'm sure it's easier than it sounds but at the mo my mind is boggled

Just think of it as a twisted crochet chain!

My second skein of the merino/mohair is finally dried. n-plied both, 315m in total, 16wpi.

Just in case anyone is looking on here I've finally got my spunky eclectic BFL dry. It's come out really soft and squidgy and 4ply. DH wants me to donate it do MIL for her birthday.

It is so lovely CJ!
You are such a natural at spinning. You have done so well so quickly
and your yarns always look beautiful, they really do.
I'm not surprised that your DH thinks it would be a wonderful gift for your MIL

CJ

Thanks Glynis.

hmmm there's a dilemma...keeping gorgeous handspun for oneself or giving it to MIL for her birthday. Do you think your DH is 'yorkshire' again?
It's totally gorgeous though maybe you could make her a 'kit' of your other bits and tell her it's for a special afghan...
did you finger crochet the yarn before n plying? (I get's it now)
|
CJ
|
oh, that's a good idea. I've decided she's not having the blue anyway. plus if DH wants me to give her some yarn, I'm taking payment from him first.
|
CJ

PS - I just did the loops as I went along for the n-plying

Gorgeous handspun. Love all yours CJ. You're really on a roll. Not done any spinning int he lat week. Done one bobbin of some merino/bamboo and need to do the 2nd one. Maybe I'll dedicate this evening to spinning. Got too much knitting to do. Waiting for my August Sockamania tester yarns to dry at the moment so I can knit up the socks in the right yarn. Also got some secret knitting to finish so spinning hassuffered a lot lately.

|
thanks Anni. it's the tour de fleece spurring me on!!
Here's my latest stuff finished. Just under 700m of light 4ply weight of spunky eclectic merino. I plied together two colourways to get this effect. DH wants this for my MIL now, but I've said only if he orders me some more stuff.
|
KnittingLadybird
|
ooooh that's gorgeous. You deserve a really big batch of good fibre if you are going to pass that on to your MIL
|
CJ
|
thanks, I've told DH it would cost at least £20 to buy that as handspun in a shop
|
KnittingLadybird
|
lol I would've said nearer £30...
|
Jobo

You are so brilliant at spinning CJ - have you thought about opening an Etsy shop? I reckon you would do really really well
|
CJ
|
well, I've told DH £30 and he went and ordered her something from amazon.
thanks Jobo. no time for an etsy shop at the moment.

Gorgeous handspun again, CJ. Do you get time for knitting these days?
this is my July offering. It's Merino/Bamboo from Dragon Fiber on Etsy and here is the fiber prior to spinning:
And here is the spun yarn.
It's probably about dk ish but I've not checked WPI yet not have I any idea what the yardage is but I've got just over 100gr of this. My plan is to start knitting with it in the next week or two, just trying to decide what to knit. This is my best spun yarn yet I think as I'm happier with the consistency when it comes to thickness of the singles, still a few thicker areas but much better, and the plying is much, much better. I still struggle to get the right amount of twist and consistent twist when plying but with this one I did all hte plying in one session and I counted all the way through to get a consistent yarn and it paid off, I also put more twist in than I htought I'd want and it worked perfectly.
Don't know what to spin next. It's a toss up between some Wensleydale from Yarn Yard and Cashmere/Silk from Dragon Fiber. Have never spun either yarn before and I love the idea of the Cash Silk but not too keen on the colour but I love the colour of the Wensleydale. NOt had time to spin for a week or two but will make some time this weekend.
|
CJ

that looks lovely Anni. nice and consistent. the cash silk sounds gorgeous.
oh, I do knit a bit still, but mostly lace weight which seems to take forever, so I'm not actually finishing as much as last year when it was mostly socks.
