Is this too scruffty?!!Some of you may remember, I already started this pattern a year ago, got intensely bored with lack of progress and frogged. Well, I decided to start the kimono shawl from folk shawls book again. I'm enjoying it and don't really want to frog, but I'm not sure if my knitting is too holey or not. The pattern is for a thicker yarn, I think. But I'm going with laceweight and 3.75mm needles. Not sure I like the effect or can see much of a pattern. Does lace normally look like this unblocked? I'd hate to frog for nothing, or does it really need another size needle - suggestions welcome. ta. Here's a few piccies.
this is the original:-
Here's my feeble efforts so far.

I think that looks really lovely but what do I know about lace? Smashing colour.
I reckon it will be fine after a block but somebody who can knit better than me will be able to tell you I'm sure

Yes CJ lace looks woeful unblocked, why not block what you have already done. I've seen knitters do that to see if it's worth going on with the shawl. I love the shawl by the way!!

Again I have NO ideas about the blocking lace thing - which is what you want to know - but it does look very pretty. And the pattern is fantastic.

It looks fine to me... if you don't want to block it just pin a section out to stretch the lace pattern and see what you think.... leave it and keep looking at it... if you like the look all well and good but if not then well you know the answer.....
I often refer to my lace knitting as a 'pan scrub'...

thanks. think I'll carry on then. If I frogged this one again, I can't see me ever wanting to cast on again. The yarn is lovely though, it's from handpainted yarns in uraguay. Must keep this one away from DD though - it's very pink.

I'd seriously suggest going on a bit longer with it then transfer the sts to a really long circ ot a bit of scrap yarn and block it to check on the effect, you will be suprised at how much different it looks-do another pattern repeats and give it a go.

Love that colour and the lace looks fine to me. Either pin out or block what you've got or do a smaller swatch with just some of the main section of the lace pattern and block it out. Try different needle sizes and then decide what you like.

I also can't advise on the blocking as I haven't yet finished any laceweight thing - my Kiri looks very much like panscrub, but is OK stretched out a bit so I think it'll be fine. But blocking or pinning out what you've done, or do a bit more and then block it sounds like a great plan (filed away for future reference ... ! )
I have to say that what you've done so far does look absolutely amazing! Stunning even! What gorgeous yarn. Hope the blocking works out OK and you get to carry on, can't wait to see that finished

It looks fine to me, the suggestions already given about blocking what you have done seem like a good idea. I think it will come out beautifully. I luuuurve the colour I must say
Go CJ!

CJ it looks good so far, Its always hard to get an idea of the pattern until a few rows are worked. Love the colours.

Definitely not dappy! Talented I'd say

I wouldn't give up on it, with my lace it never really shows it's true colours until it's blocked. I have one piec to darn the ends in and then I will take a pic later so you can see the difference.

I think it looks lovely CJ - its a very pretty colour.
I can't give you any advice on blocking, I am not a blocker, I use a steam iron which I sort of hover over the article. Probably not what is recommended, but its been OK so far

and yay - my blocking wires from heirloom knitting arrived not long ago, so I'll be able to do a good job blocking - well that's the theory anyway. DS seems to think the tube they came in is a light sabre thingy.
and thanks FC.

CJ it's looking great...keep going gal.
I have never mid-blocked anything but it does seem obvious now...lol
(my tecnique is to wear lightcoloured trousers (if i'm knitting darker colours) and stretch the pattern over my knee...well it's worked so far rofl.

CJ, Have a look at my blocked shawl - and the preblocking photos in my post 'It's blocked!"- it might help you see how it changes with blocking!

thanks, Jo. Your's is lovely, I hope mine will look half as good!!! Will try and do some more tonight, but with a distinct lack of sleep this last few weeks, it might be best to leave it till I'm more awake.

DH sent DS in cos he couldn't be bothered to put him to bed himself. DS bounced on bed, I lost it and ended up frogging in a rage. Then DH was horrible to me saying I shouldn't knit complicated things if I don't have enough brain power to do them.

sorry to hear about your frogging. Hope you get peace to do the lace eventually, maybe 4 years time when the kids are at school ,

I think it looks lovely too CJ. The lace shawls I've knitted using Lace Silk from HandMaiden have been on 3.75mm and I think a holey effect is exactly what you want and unblocked lace always looks like a bit of rag. It'll look gorgeous blocked.
And do you remember that bit of research published last year or so...Scientists proved that although men had bigger brains than women, the extra brain power was used exclusively in searching for a mate......
