instep shaping...numpty questionright...how do I make a bigger instep part on a sock. My mam has really broad feet and a high instep. She has problems getting my socks on so i've done 68stitches (that bit's ok) but I know i'll the increase the instep part...I just can't work out how

I have never done it before but why not just decrease less stitches when you are doing the gusset??! Would that work??! So instead of decreasing back to 68, decrease to whatever amount of stitches you think will work??

Could you increase on the instep after the gusset.
I use a sirdar pattern and on the instep you can do a k1 p1 rib for about 15 rounds on a size 6 which gives support but makes it stretchy, you could also maybe increse your needle size at this point to give a bit more room.

Make the heel flap slightly longer /or pick up more stitches down the sides of the flap - gives you more stiches over where the instep is wider and a longer decrease area. Dh has an instep of 12 inches because of a high arch , but his foot is only 9 inches around.

Thankyou very much for your replies...i'll give the heel flap a bit of an extension

That was just the advice I was going to give. Lengthen heel flap/pick up more stitches. You could also decrease over more rows. Instead of decreasing every other round you could do every 3rd round.
