I really like this and want to make it but...

Isn't it pretty!

The problem is that it says the XXXL size has a bust measurement of 70cm - well, actually i think it's just under the bust as the bust is formed from the cabled yoke...
I have a much larger measurement than 70cm, mine's closer to 100!! Embarassed
However, the XXXL neck measurement says 27cm and if i'm reading it right this is just the measurement across the back of the neck, not the circumference of the neck?? My back of neck measurement is closer to 21cm which is the 3rd one so is a large...

Does anyone know if it'd be possible for me to fudge it to get it to work for me? It's knitted side to side with what i think are short rows for the shaping Confused
melody yarns

Ah no Fran - that's half the finished measurement under the yoke, so the largest size would measure 55" when completed.
knittingnanny

Have you looked on Rav Franney?

If someone has already made it, they might be able to give you some insight into the sizing.   Also, it looks as though the 70cm is the width across, not around  Shocked

That does, however, make the neck quite loose  Confused

It's like a short sleeved version of the Sirdar Eco wool one - it is pretty.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! YAY!! Very Happy Very Happy Thankyouthankyouthankyou!! {{hugs}}
I can do the Large size and that should work out right!
::doing a happy dance up the ladder to the loftstash::

I had looked on Rav but nobody has any notes on any of their projects Sad but i knew if i asked here that you'd be able to help cos you're all so much cleverer than me! (and have knitted "proper" garments too)

Watch this space, i'm casting on this afternoon!! Very Happy
franney

Poo! I have no 8mm circular needles! ROFL

Guess i'll be casting on next week when the needles i am about to order turn up then...

Ten minutes later: Found a Pony circular lurking behind the sofa, i think it came from the Knitting Parlour goodie bags - remember them Joy? Very Happy
Going to try knitting with it and will probably be ordering KnitPro tips as well just because i love them Very Happy

What yarn did you find in the loftstash Franney?

I find it so difficult to tell sub weights from a drops pattern!!

Well, Rav says that Eskimo is a Super Bulky so i'm going to try swatching my RYC Soft Tweed and see how that measures up cos Rav says that it is also a Super Bulky. We shall see!
pictish

YAYYY!! Go you  Razz I have one of those circulars from the stash hamper and I think they were 8mm Razz

It's a gorgeous pattern - might have to queue that Wink
knittingnanny

Gosh - that's extra chunky then - it says 11 sts & 15 rows per 10cm square.

My Click chunky is 14 sts & 19 rows per 10cm.  Sad
And I've got a lot of it  Embarassed  Sad

KN, what about this one??

I haven't really looked yet Franney - too many WIPs, but I do like to print patterns off straight away, otherwise I'll never find them again.

(And can't get Rav at work Crying or Very sad )

Sorry, didn't think about Rav not working for some people when they are at work! Here's the link to the blogpost Wink

They sure were good goodie bags, i gave my Mum the skein of DB silk and she made a little handbag with it and the Opal sock yarn is destined to become a scarf for a Chrimble pressie. Very Happy

Well, i've swatched and the fabric i like best is with the 6.5mm needle tip on the knit side and 6mm on the purl side, it comes in at 12sts to 10cm though so i'll have to do some maths and see if i need to knit the next size up or if i can get away with the large. I am losing weight, albeit slowly, though so large might still work Confused
I do knit loose!! Shocked
franney

OMG! I might have to give up on this garment knitting lark, it's SO complicated!!

I have to work cables, turns (short rows effectively), stocking stitch bits and garter stitch bits all with just the instruction:
continue in this manner until work measures 30cm

which means i have to work it all out myself and keep track of where i am in the cable patterns!! EEEEEPP!! Confused

A woman of your calibre can do it Franney - I know you can!

Frann-ey! Frann-ey! Frann-ey! *cheers to keep you going!*
modelwidow

Yes Franney, but it's gorgeous - and if you tackle each stage at a time you'll be fine.

I recently had a quote sent to me by a friend - which I think might be quite appropriate........

Always believe in yourself - you know more than you think you do!
franney

I have a question! Very Happy

Quote:
Marker-1 = after 32-33-34-35-36-37 sts.
Marker-2 = after 52-53-55-56-58-59 sts.
Marker-3 = after 63-65-67-69-71-73 sts. Leave markers in piece until finished measurements, so that the turns are worked in straight lines. Continue as follows from RS: 5 garter sts, 28-29-31-32-34-35 stocking sts, M.1 (= 11 sts), M.2 (= 8 sts), M.3 (= 11 sts), 0-1-1-2-2-3 stocking sts and finish with 5 garter sts. Continue in pattern like this until finished measurements. AT THE SAME TIME work TURNS – see above. Continue with turns until piece measures 26-28-30-33-36-39 cm from cast on row – measured at bottom of piece

So, i've the three cable patterns, M1 and M2 have 16 rows and M2 has 8 rows (not sure if it's significant though) and when i knit up to marker 1 i don't have any cables, when i knit up to marker two i have M1 and M2 and when i knit to marker 3 i have M1, M2 and M3 to do.
So, my question is about which row of the cable chart i should be working when i get to marker 3... do i keep the charts at the same row on each or do i "stagger" them? That's not the right word but i can't think how else to describe it!!
marker 2 = M1 & M2 cable row 1
marker 3 = M1 & M2 cable row 3 M3 cable row 1
etc
OR
marker 2 = M1 & M2 cable row 1
marker 3 = M1, M2 & M3 cable row 3...

I think it's the first option, so the cables are staggered, otherwise the chart would be written differently wouldn't it?? Confused

Oh, ELP!! Laughing
Auntie Noo

Just had a look at the pattern- and I think you must keep on the same row of all the charts, othewise your cables won't meet/cross?

I love DROPS patterns for the fact that they are so open to interpretation, I wonder if any two finished garments ever look the same?!
cazzie

Might be worth dropping SKD a line - Birgette is really helpful and if she doesnt know will usually know someone to ask Very Happy
Auntie Noo

Yeah actually I agree with Cazzie, cos it's difficult to work out without seeing the knitting - if I was doing it myself I think I'd know, but reading instructions ... it's hard to picture.

There aren't any cables that cross, the first one is the wavy one across the bust area, M2 is the centre one and M3 is the top edge one Confused

I shall e-mail Brigitte, she's been very helpful in the past hasn't she.

Oh believe me, even with the knitting in front of you it's hard to picture ROFL

I'm gutted cos i really want to make it but i don't want to just plough on without knowing i am doing it right!
KnittingLadybird

just my two penneth here but I think you follow across the whole 3 charts across it's rows as set the m2 is repeated again before you get to the ends of m1 and m3....now I haven't really looked at the pattern but that's how i'd follow the charts...not really much help and i'm not sure that's what you we're asking anyway....Laughing soz hun

I don't understand! Embarassed
Unless you mean that there are actually two of chart 2 to equal one of charts 1 and 3?
The problem is you work no charts on turn 1, then chart 1 and 2 on turn 2 and then charts 1,2 and 3 on turn 3 but what i don't know is if i keep the rows of the charts the same regardless which surely means that i'll be missing out rows of chart 3 as it is only worked on half of the turns...

Rolling Eyes
i might need a lie down now Laughing
KnittingLadybird

ok i've had a quick read...I see (and feel) the frustration!!!! I got lost with the turns bit...i'm assuming as this sideways knit this knitting to marker1 and turning is for the yolk?...I think the confusing bit is that the charts are called m1 m2 m3 but I don't think it is reference to the charts....I'm going to have a really good look atthe pattern because it has got me intrigued now.
Thanks for that Laughing Wink

Keep going, it'll be worth it, It reaally is a lovely top Very Happy

i have visions of 4 of us knitting this up over the weekend just to see how the dam pattern works!!! Wink
KnittingLadybird

Franney...dunno if i'm helping or not but I think I've got it...your cable sts (worked over 30sts) should lie inbetween your markers 1 and 2 (I think)...when you turn your work - you will knit the 30 cable sts uninterupted,  just complete the charts and turn your work...I think i'm going to knit this, that way we can help each other lol

Well, only cables one and two are in between markers 1 and 2, the third cable is between markers 2 and 3 which is where my problem lies!

I've had no knitting time at all this weekend so it's gone back down the side of the sofa until i get some time to drag it out and growl at it frustratingly for a while Laughing

I think i will be following cable chart 3 and knitting it as i come to it and not at the same pace as charts 1 and 2 otherwise i'll be missing out rows and that doesn't make sense to me Confused Rolling Eyes

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's sideways cable cardis though, we'll have to make sure we all wear them to Wroughton! Laughing

Franney you can always phone/email Bruce and Birgitte - Birgitte translates the patterns and is very helpful Cool

franney

Well, i've left the cables on the first bit even though they are definitely wrong but it's a design feature and a reminder that i had to work hard on it and think i've got it worked out right now! I knit some more on this last night and it seems to be going ok - i'm going to take some photos and put them in "look what i made", please feel free to point and laugh at my untidy knitting!! Laughing

Just like I said to Debs on the other thread, it's your jumper franney and if you like how it's turning out that's all that matters IMO Cool

I would be exactly the same!! - As pictish says tho' it's yours and as long as you like it you can knit the cables any way you choose!
