I hate what I have just spunWoe, woe and thrice woe
I have spun, plied, skeined and washed 95 yards of 'Wooded' pencil roving from n. It weighs about 40g so its sort of DK creeping to Aran weight.
I hate it....it looks horrid and muddy and tweedy and .....well, just yuek.
I did all the right things (I thought) I separated it into 2 equal amounts and spun each lot on a separate drop spindle so I would have equal-ish lengths of yarn for plying. However.....
Mistake 1: I didnt keep checking which end of the variagated roving I was spinning so the colours dont match.
Mistake 2: I didnt realise that I would quickly get better at joining breaks so 1 spindle had lots of fluffy joins and 1 had smooth joins
Mistake 3: I didnt realise that I was gradually spinning more and more finely as my drafting etc improved so spindle 1 yarn is twice as thick as spindle 2 yarn.
Mistake 4: I didnt check that my plying twist was even when I spun the 2 yarns together on my huge plying spindle so some is tightly twisted and some isnt twisted at all.
I suppose, as its only my second skein of yarn EVER on a spindle I should have expected something to go wrong - but I think this is a list of how NOT to spin variagated rovings.
I've turned something beautiful into something hideous after about 20 hours of hard work, sweat, tears....oh, and I cut my finger too so I even shed blood for this project as well !!!!

I am sorry it didn't work out. I imagine that spinning is one of those things where you have to try things for yourself to see why they do or don't work and that an awful lot of practice is required before it looks really good.
At least you are doing it - I have yet to try my beautiful spindle that n sent me in the summer swap.

Claire, don't worry, it's the learning process. The way you were spinning at the end will bear no resemblance to how you were doing at the beginning, you have leapt several skill levels over the period of 40g.
I would either knit it into a little bag to hang on your new wheel, to keep essentials in... small scissors, wraps per inch guage, threading hook.... or just keep it as a momento of where you started, and everytime you spin a new yarn, put it beside this first skein and smile.

i agree with everyone claire learning is a process and mistakes are part of that process...at least you know what to do next time.....and as n said use the yarn you have created to make something to celebrate all your hard work. and post pics of the yarn and if you do decide to make something of that too.........definately keep at it ....we could all have a go on our w/e away next june, you will be able to run a masterclass by then;-)
