I had a go at crochet today!

I inherited all my Nan's knitting and crochet stuff - she was great at both - although I think she liked crochet best. She used to do a lot of very fine work. I've been meaning to have a go for a while now - i've got a book which has a bit of crochet info. in it but for some reason it seemed a bit daunting. Anyways....OH's brother and his wife came to stay yesterday / today and she can knit and crochet - so I asked her to show me the basics. Had a go with some DK wool to start with, then decided to try making a scarf with some debbie bliss pure silk I bought ages ago - coz it feels gorgeous. I've started it about 3 times but I think this time it's kinda working and I'm starting to understand why people rave about crochet so much! My tension is a bit uneven at the moment (I'm guessing silk wasn't the best choice for a beginner haha!). I'll take a photo when I've done a bit more Very Happy

Sounds fab sprite64....looking forward to the photo. I bet the silk crochets lovely though...I always find smooth or silky yarns work best with crochet.

(that's why sirdar's firefly is the absolute pits) lol

Good for you. I've yet to dabble in the world of crochet. My mum can't crochet so i've never learnt.

I don't think I'm too good at it yet but I didn't find it hard to pick up. It's always nicer to have someone show you though!

Yeah I agree. And someone to show you the mistakes and sort out your knots when you go wrong.

Mmmm true! I don't think crochet is so bad though - I've managed to frog mine back a bit a couple of times - no probs. You're only dealing with one loop really so (I may be wrong here - any seasoned crochet peeps please let us know!) I don't see how you can get in as much of a mess as you can with knitting if you drop a load of stitches. I hope that's right anyway as SIL lives rather a long way away so I'm going to be stuck if I go seriously wrong Sad

I've been doing a bit as my mum was up this weekend. I can now do the basics and increases/decreases. I've got some colinette silk, so you've given me the idea to crochet DD a scarf Very Happy And I crocheted my first flower too.
