Hottie cover KALI always get cold feet in bed in the winter and if I go to bed early take a hottie with me but it's TOO hot to start with so I have been meaning to make a cover for ages. There was a free one in last month's Knitting mag done in Artesano Hummingbird (which I have in my stash ) so I am going to make that in time for those chilly autumn nights we have up here.
Just wondered if anyone else fancied making one as well - doesn't have to be the same pattern as I think there are free ones on the net There's a free chunky one here and there are more free ones on Rav - this one is cute!!

I was thinking of making one too for DS2 to take to bed with him, I got knitting last month with the free pattern, but the only DK I have is acrylic and I'm supposed to be on stashalong, not sure if the acrylic will work as well as wool.

Hmmm I'm not sure it will matter that much Hilary - it's just really to protect you from too much heat and keep the heat in a bit. I suppose something with a bit of wool might be more insulating maybe.

Just a thought - and I really don't know - but would acrylic melt on a hottie??????? - anyone care to try?!

I would like to make a cover for my and the kiddies wheat bags which get nuked in the microwave every night in the winter. I bought some lovely yarn but haven't made it because I thought the yarn might burn. Does anyone have any suggestions about that?

What about putting a small swatch of the yarn on a metal tray and heat oven to same temp as hottie water?

acrylic doesn't melt on a hot water bottle...my nanna made me a cover years ago, when we all stayed in their cararvan...i'm still alive and trust me I needed that hot water bottle (caravans we're somewhat lacking in the 70's )

YAY - well done Linz! - I thought someone would probably know, but it was just one of those little things in the back of my mind that I couldn't quite dislodge! - Nice to know that I can be wrong once in a while!!! tee hee (although obviously don't anyone tell MrNoo he doesn't need to know that!)

I ALWAYS want the same shade for some reason but in this case it was a fluke cos I got the yarn as a gift when I subscribed to Knit Today a while back

Yes I have been intending to make a new hottie cover too, just a question of getting round to it - so perhaps a 'hottie-along' would help. I have had the second pattern ( Rachel's HWBC ) in mind for some time, but altering it so that the top is sealed and the bottle goes in the bottom - since I usually fill mine in the basin I thought an easily removable cover would be best (soggy covers are not comfy)
And as for acrylic, I've had one for ages with no probs - in fact it was that that got me back into knitting a few years ago, I saw a multicoloured stripey knitted cover in a sunday supplement for some ridiculous amount of money and thought I'd knit myself one instead, and the rest is, as they say, history.

I'll start a KAL then even if there are just a few of us

I am making the same one pictish, but have remembered that I have 2x50g balls of Knitpicks telemark (one burgundy, one blue) that I got in a swap ages ago, havent had any idea what to make with them so will use them for the hottie cover knitted in stripes and miss off the hand pocket.

That should be enough - I can't imagine I will use all of the 150g in my skein.

Has anyone started yet, Ive nearly finished my first one, just got to add buttons, but the boys are arguing about who gets it, DS2 has now hidden it in his bed.
I have some cheap sock yarn from ebay so may knit another. using 2 strands of 4 ply, plenty of socks at the moment so need to find other uses for sock yarn.
The temperatures dropping here at night now so wont be long before the hotties are being used.

Not yet cos after I started the KAL we had/are having some very hot clammy weather at night but give it another day or so and we'll be back to cold nights again and I'll feel like starting!!
I'd love to see a pic of yours when you get a minute Hilary

I've knitted a few inches, using inherited aran weight with no label - it feels like it is mainly acrylic with possibly a little wool in there, but I love the colour - just praying I have enough though.
Will post piccy when it looks more presentable and not just a rolled up knitted tube
Look forward to seeing yours Nevisknitter, does the 2 strands of 4 ply work out about aran weight then?

I did the first one with knitpicks telemark that I got in the secret santa on the AY forum ages ago, been knitting my nativity with 2 strands of 4ply and its knitting up like a thick DK. I will swatch first to see how its looking.

'tis done, just need the cold weather now!
No idea what the yarn was (inherited it) but it feels like acrylic with a little wool in at a guess. I made the top shorter and stitched it up, and put a flap on the bottom so I can get it on and off easily.

Thats lovely, bet you cant wait for winter now.
I finished another one last week but havent taken pics yet

At the last minute I threw some yarn (more unidentified inherited aran) and the pattern in with my holiday knitting.
I'm glad I did, it was jolly cold in the Lake District (not to mention wet and windy) and the hottie cover was in use before the end of the week.
