His Dark Materials TrilologySplit into three separate books written by Philip Pullman, Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.
They are really written for (older) children, but they are so well written and have such a lot of thought provoking philosophical ideas in them that they make a facinating read. I've just re-read the three books again - for the second time - and was still so entranced that I missed my stop on the tube. They're so un-put-downable that I even neglected my knitting last Saturday and spent all day reading instead.

I too recommend these, though I read them believing they were in the ilk of Tolkien. JRR they are not. But when I accepted they were not about something similar to Middle Earth I really enjoyed them. They are well written, the story captivating and the characterisation so vivid. I felt that I accompanied Lyra and her Daemon on their journey as I read.
Strangely I recommended Philip Pullman's The Scarecrow And His Servant and
The New Cut Gang books to a colleague for her 9 year old son's birthday as good book choices, though The Dark Materials series I suggested would suit her 11 yr old first.

When I worked as a school librarian (which I miss, some of the time ) Philip Pullman, and particularly this trilology, was responsible for making more children really get hooked on reading than almost any other book - especially boys. I haven't read them yet but want to do so before the films come out (as I prefer to read books first then watch the films).

However good, I doubt a film would give the same subtle tension that these books generates as it is read, from almost the first chapter. I can liken it to edging forward in the seat incrementally as you do in horror flicks etc. By the 3rd chapter it is nail nibbling stuff. Pullman is a genius......

My DD was going for an audition for the film but they were looking for a dark haired, pale looking girl so there was no point taking DD

I loved these when they first came out, but when I tried re-reading them I couldn't get into them at all
The play that was on at the National Theatre a few years ago was fantastic. One of my friends works there and sneaked me in cheap!!!

DS1 and I saw both plays on consecutive nights at the National Theatre goodness two and a half years ago now doesn't time fly, and wonderful they were too. Ali - give the books a go, I know I've said before but I literally couldn't put them down and read all 3 in 9 days, and I really really cared about the characters and I cried at the end.
I've just finished reading the Sally Lockhart Quartet.
What I have seen of the film looks promising.

I totally agree with Joy...I sobbed and sobbed when I finished the last one and didn't want it to end...I don't think a book as ever involved me with the characters so much! Have you thought about getting them on audio book Ali..?? You could knit while you listen!

Did you see yesterday that Philip Pulman's "Northern Lights" was adjudged the best children's book of the last seventy years.
