help with sleeves needed

Hi all
I am having a problem with the sleeves on the jumper I am doing for my husband
The pattern says to increase to 121 stitches then knit straight to 19inches then start the sleeve cap shaping
My problem is I have been doing the increases as instructed and have only got to 113 sts and am already at 19inches. So, do I start the sleeve shaping now as per the pattern and hope that blocking will sort out the stitch difference? I cant carry on increasing till I get the right number of stitches  as the sleeves will be way too long
What do you think is the best thing to do?
Many thanks
Lois

You'll need the correct number of increases to work the sleeve cap successfully otherwise it won't fit into the armhole properly. Does your row tension match the pattern you're working to? I think I'd be frogging the sleeve, working out how many rows per 10cm, how many rows you'll need to achieve the correct length of sleeve and then working the increases to fit with the number of rows you'll need to work iyswim?

Have you checked your row guage Lois?? That might be why that's happened. To be honest if it was me (and I know this is a pain) I would frog back to the beginning of the increases and increase at a faster rate eg every 4 rows rather than every 6/8/whatever or at least frog back to halfway up the sleeve and work out how many more you need to do in that space to reach 121st.

Hope that makes sense.

Oh well, looks like I will be frogging it then Sad
the jumper may have to sit in the naughty corner for a bit. It was supposed to be DHs christmas pressie but I lost the will to go on with it. I picked it up again because I wanted to finish it before we move
